YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: McNutt Gone
« on: February 19, 2019, 06:14:04 PM »
McNutt is an arrogant a$$.

I'll tell a little story.

Before this past season started he wanted to toughen up his secondary so he brings them down to Jack Loew's Southside Boxing Club and my friend Vinny O'Neill who runs the amateur program there was putting them through a workout.

I run a local boxing website and Vinny and I even do a little Youngstown boxing based podcast so I swung by the gym that day since we were doing our show and I had to pick Vinny up, not even knowing they were going to be there....hell I don't think Vinny even knew.

So I'm up on the ring apron keeping time for Vinny using my cell phones stopwatch and homeboy walks up to me and was about to smack the phone out of my hand because he thought I was filming his players working out.  I guess that is his move in life, knocking people's phones out of their hands.

Anyhow, he tried apologizing to me but I blew him and his big melon head off for the most part.

With that said, he seemed passionate and intense but he needs to learn to hold those emotions back at certain times and as someone said hopefully he can get it together.

The "passionate" statement is accurate... ;)

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Trib: Decision to stay, or go, is on Pelini
« on: November 24, 2018, 11:45:00 AM »
I thought his articles had been neither pro nor against the program for all these years. He had some good insight and analysis on the YSU games. I actually enjoyed the football and basketball report/analysis better on the Warren Tribune than on the Vindy. Vargo had some good reports on YSU MBB.
There was not a single article on Vindy on the YSU's win over Westminister (Tribune had an article)....... So much for home town news paper.
Deadline was 9:30 on Wednesday night. Game started at 7. We shot the game and held for the final score and a few details. Nature of the beast with Thanksgiving inserts and such. Same deal for as long as I can remember.

Ed,

Why were Sclazo's write-ups available to non-subscribers? I live in Georgia and don't subscribe because most vindy news isn't relevant.  I would subscribe to a football season only sports package.    most papers make you answer some sort of survey to read.  Vindy now doesn't allow it.  Have you thought about changing the business model?

All the YSU stories should be available on our website. If you're not seeing them, let me know and I'll see what I can do to get to the bottom of it.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: OSU grad QB to transfer
« on: May 15, 2018, 04:20:49 PM »
Big recruit at the time for OSU, but obviously can't play at that level.  VanGorder was the same at ND.

Will find out in the next 2 years if he can play at that level.  Can't compare him to VanGorder, because VanGorder never took a snap at ND.  Burrow was JT's primary backup in 16, and completed 22 of 28 passes at mop up time in 6 games.  Last season he was 7 of 11 in 4 games, after Haskins moved ahead of him when he broke his hand.
I'm sorry, but I don't see any difference in Burrow's 26 "mop up" passes and VanGorder's dozens of snaps (not -0- as you note) at ND.  Neither mean a damn thing.  They are equal in assessing the player, as they contribute nothing.
We'll see with Monty at YSU and maybe Burrow at LSU?
Dozens of snaps as a holder. MVG compiled no statistics as a QB at Notre Dame. Never threw a pass. Never ran the ball. His bio says he played in one game as a reserve QB in 2016. Maybe he handed off a few times or was sent in to take a knee at the end of a game.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU's Derek Rivers
« on: April 15, 2018, 01:36:36 PM »
Team policy is team policy. And I'm sure being first-year players, guys like Derek don't want to rock the boat. Understand that completely. If the team (read: Bill Belichick) says no interviews, then no interviews.

You'd be surprised at how some of the teams' policies go. When the Packers played in Pittsburgh last season, we wanted to do a story on one of their assistant coaches who is from the Valley. Their media-relations people wouldn't let us near the guy after the game. Their policy is that assistant coaches don't talk to the media, even if we're just trying to do a "local guy makes good" story.

Like I said before, it's a new season and the hope is we'll be able to get an interview with Derek. He's always been up front with us both at YSU and in letting us know what the Patriots' policies are.

We've reached out to Derek multiple times since he was drafted by the Patriots, most recently during the run-up to the Super Bowl. We have been told the Patriots declined to allow him to talk to us because he was injured and not on the active roster.

Ed: thanks for the explanation on Derek. The article on Derek showed his gracious and caring way to help a person he didn't even know.

You're welcome. We'll keep trying, because Derek seems like a terrific guy who deserves some press.

Hopefully the situation will have changed now that we're approaching the 2018 season. But the Patriots do not always make for easy access. Another example is when we tried several times to do stories on Frank Ross when he was on their staff. Permission was finally granted pre-Super Bowl this year.

Testimony during the trial/sentencing was where the YSU scholarship stuff originated. YSU contacted the newspaper to deny that a scholarship was offered. My guess is that the previous coaching staff might have looked into the kid or contact him while in high school. YSU says he was not offered a scholarship and it doesn't appear he was ever a YSU student and obviously he was not part of the football program. Could have been the Wolford staff might have seen him as a walk-on type. That would be my guess. ... A correction/clarification was published on Sunday, the day after the original story ran.

General BS / Re: Richmond Suing

People, the university screwed up, just accept it and move on. they may have known this legal action was going to happen, just accept it and move on.
This is a bye week, why the rush to move on?
I disagree.  I do NOT think the university screwed up. I believe the university. or at least a couple of significant leaders of YSU, saw a young man trying to turn a troubled life around and stepped in to HELP the young man.  I see a good chunk of the comunity and in particular the Vindicator as the screw ups.  Trying to block and ruin the young man's efforts to become a useful member of society.   The man in question servied his time.  If you believe his crime should be a death or at least life sentence then work to change the law.  For me, as a Christian, I am willing to forgive the guy and offer him a chance to rejoin society.  Many of you are not, and for that I am sad.  I'm proud of Bo's efforts in this case.
Maybe you can provide an example of the newspaper taking a position against Ma'lik Richmond playing. Because the only opinion piece to take a stand one way or the other that I can recall was in favor of the kid getting a second chance ("The school of redemption," Todd Franko, Aug. 6). Bertram de Souza's pieces ("Gift for YSU's faculty," Aug. 6; "Another black eye for Valley," Aug. 13; and "YSU's prez on hot seat," Sept. 17) mentioned Richmond, but the topic of each was how YSU leadership approached the subject. As far as I can tell, those columns took no stand on whether or not the kid should be on the team.

Facts matter. Misguided and misleading bloviation, not so much.

I don't think a team from the Big Sky conference has ever beaten YSU.
That's because their style of football doesn't match up well against YSU.

You are right, it isn't a board about weed. It's just hard to ignore messages like " weed is going to ruin their lives."  It's 2016 not 1950 so if someone is going to comment about it please be educated.

Still just an opinion and as valid as yours. If not more given what just happened. The rule is simple, I am simply amazed that this happened ...if indeed it did.

It's actually not an opinion.  The medicinal benefits of it have been proven. So safe to say it's not ruining anyone's life.
Medical benefits, you say? If so, the kid behind me in line at the Liberty Wally World the other night is going to live forever.  ;)

Thanks Ed:

One thing that you could pass along (this leads to confusion for me as well); Since I do not live in Ytown, I really only have interest in YSU. So, I basically click on the menu, then sports, then YSU sports. If you do that only 2 of these stories that you listed is there. Well with today's story that makes 3. So you can easily see how people may not think there are many YSU sports stories. It could just be the way the story is tagged; but you may want to tell your site admin.

You are correct. I saw this last night when I went to find those links. It is a tagging thing. If a certain box is not checked, the story won't be under the YSU tab, although it will be online. Just more difficult to find. I'm working to fix that so that all future stories will be in a centralized location.

Yes thanks Ed for the fine job you and your co-workers do. Sorry if I offended anyone in anyway. It just would be nice to get a little more feedback from the coaches, but I completely understand its their choice. Hopefully a good report will be coming from today's scrimmage ☺
Thanks. No offense taken. Yours was not the post that bothered me.
