YSU Penguin Athletics / New Member Registration
« on: September 11, 2021, 01:38:46 PM »
My friend has been trying to become a member on this site for a long time, everytime he tries to register, he is never sent the Activate Your Account email.  He has tried with 3 different emails but nothing works.  He is very frustrated.  Why is this happening?

Non YSU Sports / High School Football
« on: August 20, 2021, 12:15:33 PM »
Why is high school football starting so soon?  It's 2 fricking weeks before Labor Day weekend.  They used to play their 1st game after Labor Day, then for many years it was the weekend before Labor Day (which I can live with), but this early start is ridiculous.  What say you?

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU Athletics Facilities Website
« on: March 27, 2020, 09:30:23 AM »
Just examined the official YSU Athletics Facilities page.  I can't believe how poorly done it is regarding the pictures for both Stambaugh and Beeghly.  The picture for Stambaugh doesn't show the media addition and the picture for Beeghly is just bad.  As soon as the new media addition was complete I would have replaced the old picture.  What are they waiting for?

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU vs. WVU
« on: December 20, 2019, 08:49:48 AM »
I can't believe no one is talking about the game.  I'm excited and can't wait.  Anyone going?  Can we win or at least keep it close?

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU Basketball coverage

So is the Vindy ever going to post an article regarding YSU men's basketball?  No hype from The Vindicator at all.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Duquesne renovating AJ Palumbo Center
« on: October 23, 2018, 02:01:01 PM »
I've always considered the Palumbo Center very similar to Beeghly Center.  Duquesne announced plans today to completely renovate the Palumbo Center.  It's not going to be very big but it will look nice.  I wish YSU would completely renovate Beeghly.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Lack of Early Football Excitement
« on: July 10, 2018, 10:33:03 AM »
I know it's summer but this site is absolutely DEAD.  Football season is just around the corner and there is no excitement at all.  Perhaps it's because we have a lousy non conference schedule that no one cares about.  Not even playing at WVU is getting anyone excited - this is sad.  So let me get things started and hopefully I'll fire some people up.  If we were in the Mid American Conference we would be excited for the start of football season.  We would have rivalries.  We would be where we belong - a perfect fit.  One conference for ALL sports.  The MAC is not dropping down to 1AA, we need to figure out how to join and make things work economically.  What say you?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Duquesne VS. YSU
« on: August 18, 2016, 12:14:34 PM »
I've worked at Duquesne for 16 years and in the past I always stated that YSU should absolutely blow out Duquesne.  This year Duquesne is extremely confident and football publications are giving them high marks.  Last year in the 1st round of the playoffs Duquesne gave W&M a good game before losing.  No one on this board is talking about this game and I fear YSU will be looking at WVU and overlooking Duquesne.  Trust me Duquesne has this game circled on the calendar and cannot wait to play YSU.

Anyone coming in from Fargo who wants to tailgate, be CERTAIN to stop by the "fun tent" for food, drinks & the "special".......WE DO A "SHOTSKI" one hour before kickoff (around 1pm, around 1:30pm many at the tent then go to the game so come early).  The red & white tent is in the larger tailgate lot next to 5th Avenue with lettering that says basically: ORIGINAL YSU TAILGATE CREW."  YSU FAN (aka Babe) wants to return the good time he had in Fargo.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Vindicator YSU beat writer
« on: October 08, 2015, 10:44:27 AM »
Now that Joe Scalzo has left The Vindicator, does anyone know if the paper plans on replacing him with another YSU "beat writer?"  There has been nothing new written in the paper in a few weeks and last weeks article appeared to be from the South Dakota newspaper.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU football & basketball OOC schedules
« on: March 27, 2015, 04:42:17 PM »
I think we all agree that YSU’s out of conference schedules for both football and basketball leave a lot to be desired.  Here is my question for this board:  in both football and basketball why do similar-sized universities as YSU schedule aggressive away-games against superior competition and make good money in the process whereas YSU chooses to schedule home opposition that is of no interest to YSU fans.  To me it comes down to the leadership of the athletic department.  Does AD Strollo have any say in the football and basketball scheduling?  It would be great to have an athletic director with balls whose philosophy is for his coaches to schedule challenging out of conference games, where playing nationally ranked teams in basketball, for example, is the norm and not the exception.

Football:  The last two years YSU played 12 games (this year it’s back to eleven).  I understand YSU needs home games for financial reasons and while I want to schedule as many exciting home games as possible I would rather have YSU develop an “attitude” and play an exciting road game if it’s prudent financially.  For example:  “okay Akron, Kent, and Toledo, you won’t play a home/away series with us then we’ll play you at your place and beat you;” or play two BCS teams like other MVC teams do; or play a “destination game” so fans can travel with the team, such as Memphis (in Memphis), SMU (in Dallas), or Tulane (New Orleans).  I think fans would be much more excited for these types of games.

Basketball:  There are schools out there that will play anyone at anytime (Oral Roberts and Oakland for example).  True, you’ll play most of these games on the road and you’ll lose most of them but they will toughen you up and in the long run you’ll become better and perhaps YSU will eventually recruit better athletes because of a tougher schedule.  I assume that YSU earns between $60,000 - $100,000+ by playing elite teams.  Wouldn’t we rather see YSU be aggressive and play this type of schedule vs. what we have been subjected to the past number of years?  Why won’t Slocum/Strollo play more of these big-money games?  YSU scheduled only one BCS conference team this year, Texas A&M, and earned $85,000 in the process.  The Vindicator did a cute story on the one big “money game” against Texas A&M and what this means to the program.   Playing the likes of Texas A&M should be the norm, not the exception, read the story here:  http://www.vindy.com/news/2014/dec/11/ncaa-basketball-money-games-pay-off-for-/

YSU Penguin Athletics / Beeghly Center/Covelli Centre
« on: January 23, 2015, 06:47:36 PM »
I have a few comments/questions regarding Beeghly Center and men's basketball:
First, it's a shame that men's basketball is the red-headed step-child to football, I believe both can be successful.  There should not be such a disparity between Stambaugh Stadium and an outdated Beeghly Center.  I don’t buy into this notion that men’s hoops cannot be successful and believe that men’s basketball should be a major money-maker.  You shouldn’t have to count on the football “money games” to support men’s basketball.  There is no reason why we do not play a tough non-conference schedule against elite teams.  There are schools out there that will play anyone at any time (Oral Roberts and Oakland for example).  True, you’ll play most of these games on the road and you’ll lose most of them but they will toughen you up and in the long run you’ll become better and perhaps YSU will eventually get better athletes because of a tougher schedule.  It would also give fans something to look forward too. No one cares about our home schedule, it’s pathetic.

Secondly, I would love to see Beeghly retrofitted with all red seats (except for the end zones).  But even if you did so, the ceilings are still too low and if you walk halfway up the bleachers you cannot see the scoreboard.  For you architects out there, is there any way that Beeghly can be retrofitted so the ceilings are not so low (I know this would cost a lot of money but I’m just curious)?

Thirdly, does anyone know how much would it cost per year (in rent) for YSU to make the Covelli Centre their home?  I'm trying, unsuccessfully, to find out online how many Division 1 college basketball teams play off-campus (it may be more than you think, for example both The University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville play in off-campus arenas).  I think moving to the Covelli Centre would drastically improve basketball, from wins to atmosphere to bringing in better teams.  Of course, YSU would also have to dramatically increase coaches salaries if they ever want to be successful.

I know YSU is strapped for cash and moving to the Covelli Centre or doing anything with the ceilings will not happen anytime soon.  Perhaps the only thing YSU can do is retrofit Beeghly with all red seats, which would look great.
Any comments?

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU VS Pitt basketball
« on: December 14, 2013, 05:06:45 PM »
Went to the YSU/Pitt game today.  Kendrick Perry was a superstar, other Guins played well too.  But as expected, Pitt dominated the boards, especially offensive rebounds, and was getting 2-3 tries at the basket.  Too bad we have no real athletic big guys in the middle because I thought our guard play was pretty good.
