Did not see that Jamar Thomas played.  Was he at the game and held out or not there?  Maybe not fast enough for a guard oriented NKU.

Just finished watching the tape of the game.  Both teams impressive compared to us at this point.  The QB at North Dakota State was the difference in my opinion.  NDSU defense is not that physically impressive, but they sure are in the right place all the time.  We need upgrades in many areas to compete with them.  I am glad to see our recruiting expand beyond our area much more than the past few years.  Local talent is fine, but it must be up to FCS level to be recruited by us.

On another note the attendance was listed as about 17,000.  Capacity is listed as 20,500.  The place sure looked full to over full to me.  Not sure what is up.

The game at Wright State was really bad.  Loosing by 50!  Watched the first half and switched to the men's game so not sure if Wright State kept the starters in all game and tried to run up the score or what.  One issue for me is just how many players we loose each year to injuries. Fortunately last year we kept our 7 or 8 healthy, but many years we loose more that just 1 or 2 players. What about the other women's teams in the league; how many do they loose?  Is our practice and preseason prep up to standard and or too difficult for women players?  We are in trouble now with yet another starter, Makenah, down for a while.

Too many easy layups for Cleveland State.  Not sure why Jamir and Ola are not in more to prevent those easy baskets.  One that was especially bad was on an in bounds play under the basket.  And they kept DQ from getting the ball.  The opening tip was a omen of things to come when they beat us down the floor off the tip.  Encouraging was the scoring of Naz and Jalani.  I think jalani needs to play more; he is athletic and can shoot the ball from 3 and close in.  Difficult match up for the other team.  Hope the coaches can get the 2 big guys up to playing significant minutes and contributing.

Also disturbing is how Cleveland State can loose so many players in the middle of the summer, and a coach, and go out and get quality players and get them up to speed so quickly.  We sure don't seem to be able to do that.  Not sure why.

Team looks like they can win some games in the Horizon League.  Free throw shooting is a problem with some of the players.  Number 1, Jamir Thomas I think, can be a big help inside if we use him.  Not sure of the status of the player from Europe that is 6 - 8, but if he returns we can have an inside presence against Northern Kentucky and Wright State and others.  At least there is hope. The emphasis on defense is paying off and makes us much more competitive. The old full court press etc seems gone or at least much less.  That rarely worked for us.

Watched the game tonight on ESPN+.  Down by 15 in the first half and come back to win by 10 or so.  Great comeback. Lacking height for sure, but played smart and number 22 was outstanding off the bench.  She was the main reason for the spark that got us the win.  Will be difficult without an inside presence. Many easy baskets by EKU inside off rebounds etc.

I am assuming that an affiliate member is not a full member, but one with restrictions.  Anyone know about the restrictions?  Say can we be removed if the full members get enough of their members playing Lacrosse and do not need us any longer to fill their league?  Other sports could fit well in the MAC as we have all said in the past. One could argue that we could be an affiliate member in all sports except football and be in a better travel situation than we are in the Horizon.  Most distant travel is Western Michigan I think compared to Green Bay etc. Not sure it there is any future beyond Lacrosse and possibly Bowling.  As we know ND picks and chooses from the ACC.  Not sure if other schools do things like that.

Hope we play a good game Saturday.  If we loose, let it be because they beat us, not that we had breakdowns that give them easy scores.

I see a few possibilities. One is that we play them well and stay in the game till the end and win or loose based on the 4th quarter.  The next I fear which is things fall apart and we loose big.  Need to block their D End to protect Mays.  That killed us in a few games and will again if we don't do something different.  Also would like to see Chapman more at running back.  His size and speed are good and could wear down a defense.  I know Joe has been good and has more quickness and speed, but spell him with number 3.  If we can run the ball a bit we will be able to throw.  If not a long day.  We can't have obvious running or passing situations; we are not good enough for success when they know what is coming.  And I think on D we need to substitute more to keep guys fresh for the 4th quarter.  Our depth is questionable for sure, but we have tried so many players on the back end that they all have playing time.  Also the D line needs substitutes for the same reason.

Lets hope for a big win!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Attendance reality
« on: October 28, 2019, 07:55:47 PM »
It is too bad that all the optimistic YSU fans are gone from this board.  Most all are negative.  Weather it is attendance or chance in a game, they are negative.  It reminds me of the old Vindicator, they won't be happy till the city of Youngstown is gone along the Cafaro's and Jim Tressel and YSU.

As for the game this week, yes it is a long shot for us to win. BUT we have played North Dakota State tough in recent history and for a few bad calls by the refs, could have won a game or two.  I understand that the refs don't like us due to the personality of Bo, but calls are calls. Our talent may be lacking I understand, but Bo is a great defensive mind.  Things could go our way.  I for one sure hope we play a good game and I think that is possible.

I thought our QB position was the weakness of our team all season coming into this game.  I was dead wrong.  Nate Mays played his heart out and did well under extreme pressure and poor play calling especially in the 1st half.  He was not perfect but darn good.  Two 3 and outs with runs mostly up the middle over and over at the beginning of the game when we could have taken charge.  He is not the problem in my opinion, in fact he is a definite asset.  Our O line was over matched and with our play calling very predicable, it made their job difficult and Nate Mays job nearly impossible.  Our play calling needs to be less predictable and the qb needs to change out of dead plays.  Not sure that is possible under our system.

On defense I was surprised by the breakdowns on the long pass plays and some of the 3rd and longs.  Our back end needs improvement and not sure if it is scheme or players or both.  Our D line did well I thought and nearly had the QB on many occasions, but he slipped away.  On the one TD pass there was holding of our D tackle that was not called.  The other way we got called on iffy plays.  The refs didn't do us a fair job in my opinion.  Probably a result of our history so no fair calls for us in any tossup play.

Hope Nate Mays is ok and can play after all he gave us.  And we need him.  This week will be almost like week 2 of a season where teams have a chance for the biggest improvement.  Our first four games didn't do that. We shall see on Saturday.

I get the WBCB on Armstrong 103.  Not sure if that is on an added package.

Today will show just where we are.  I have good confidence in the Defense and hopefully confident in the Offense.  QB is the big question mark for me.  If that is good I think we are good to go.  They will sort out the RB position today.

From my viewpoint, our team is good in most areas.  Remember we are FCS so depth is a problem and most of the players are not up to the level of the top players on many FBS teams.  But for FCS most are really good.  My opinion is D line is fine to better than fine, Line Backer are ok, Corners are ok, Safeties are fine.  Overall D is fine.

On O the O line is ok, the Running backs are good, the tight Ends are really good for FCS, and the only question is still the QB.  Running the QB is fine, but throwing concerns me.  I expect the MVFC teams will load up on the run and short passing game and make us throw deep to beat them.  If we can do that we are in.  If not trouble.  We will see a lot next Saturday at 5.

On another issue it seems that teams are trying to get tall wide receivers on our shorter dbs, especially number 2 and 7.  Many pass interference penalties when they make contact with the receivers.  Not sure what we can do in the future about this, but it seems like it will be an issue all season.

Punting is also an issue.  Watched 43 punting in warm-ups and he can really boom the ball.  In the game with a rush and at times less than ideal snaps, he has had trouble. I think this will improve.

QB play better than I expected.  Hope it holds together.

D and O lines are fine.  RB is fine. Receivers fine. Tight ends really good. Line backers fine.  Safeties fine. Corners may be an issue.

My uneducated opinions.

Our D will be ok. On O we need to be able to pass the ball better, especially down the field.  If not all will load up against the run and that will be it. Waid must not be ready.  Punting is an issue.  I think McFadden will be ok. Biggest concern is QB with punting 2nd.  Otherwise we are not bad.

Don't forget that Indiana State was ahead of Kansas with 4 minutes to go in the game.  SDSU, UNI, and Indiana State did very well against FBS opponents.  Indiana State's QB is the real deal passing the ball.  It will be interesting to see how we match up against these teams.  Find out the first MVFC game against UNI. I still think our major question mark is QB.  The rest is mostly ok in my opinion.  Defense is much improved overall, kicking game is better, O line better, and Chapman is the real deal running the ball.  Kick coverage is a bit of a question.  Howard lost 79 - 0 against Maryland so probably won't learn much this Saturday. Hope Craycroft gets some meaningful snaps with deep throws to see if that is a good part of his game.
