YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: 2011 football tickets
« on: June 02, 2011, 06:41:45 AM »
I was worried. I called and they said that the tickets were already sent. I did not receive anything, so I paid over the phone. Then a couple days later, the renewal arrived.

OSU needs to fire Gee and Smith.  Those players involved especially Pryer need to get out of dodge and leave Columbus.

Right on Pride. Make a real statement. I think Pryor is gone, but the rest need to go as well.

By the way, did you notice that every time SI/ESPN/CNN mentions Tressel, they bring up the worst coach in football (in terms of NCAA violations). Urban Myer? My gosh if the NCAA spent one day in Florida, there would be no football there for the next 20-years.

Indy. I would never deny what was done. However, do you think that many (and I mean many) others did not know about this? I will agree with you in hoping that it does not come back on YSU, as that is my primary concern. There has to be lot's of dirty laundry ready to be aired now, or OSU would lose much of their fan base. Believe me, the university does not want coach T to be another "Woody" in the eyes of the consumers ...errr um fans. Also, today is the last day for season ticket renewals. So most of the money is in.

The Ohio State disease" is a normal reaction. There are three ways he could have left YSU:

1. A promotion.
2. A dismissal.
3. A retirement.

He took #1.

As to Hannon. It is as simple as I stated. I expect blind-loyalty from everything associated with YSU ...past and present. Hannon's opinions on OSU are irrelevant to me, as I am a YSU fan. However, well-intentioned or not, he wrote words and that is disloyal to the man that coached my team for 15-years, was my team's AD for 10, dropped .28 mil for the study center, and dropped 1 mil for the building that carries his name. Have you not ever heard the phrase "if you have nothing good to say about someone, then say nothing"? Hannon should have chose the latter. Hannon may not have directly bitten the hand that feeds him, but he did not restrain the dog either.

Now that it has happened ...one more thing. Hannon now needs to tender his resignation as well. I understand the "intent" of the article; but it is too late for Bob, and his respect to the program here at YSU. Mussolini finally denounced Hitler, and he still got it. This is why your media should stay out of things. I know Hannon is no longer in the news, but he still is the voice of the Penguins, and that requires "blind loyalty".

It was coming. I will say one thing before this is "spun" in every direction ...wake up America ...your media is too powerful. People ignore their control in politics, but now that it impacts something they care about, maybe they will have a moment of clarity. This all started back when OSU told ESPN they were not welcomed for the Michigan game almost 10-years ago. It started back when Tressel mentioned Christian faith 10-years ago. I still find it impossible to believe how insignificant his offense truly was. Also, coach H going to Kent was a sign.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Baseball vs. Valpo

Dayton, Ohio -- Valparaiso scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally and defeat the Youngstown State baseball team 8-6 in an elimination game at the 2011 Horizon League Baseball Championship.

The No. 4 Crusaders move on to play No. 1 Wright State on Sunday in the championship round while No. 6 YSU bows out of the tournament in third place.

The Penguins finish the season 14-41, but they had a strong season this week in Dayton. Youngstown State last won two games in the Horizon League Tournament in 2007, and the Penguins finished at least third for the first time since 2005. The only better year in the postseason was 2004 when the Penguins went 4-0 and won the Horizon League Baseball Championship en route to a berth in the Austin Regional.

After eliminating No. 2 UIC Saturday morning and beating No. 3 Milwaukee in the opening round, the Penguins gave the fourth-seeded Crusaders all they could handle.

Youngstown State built a 3-0 lead after the top of the third and led 6-5 after the top of the seventh.

The Penguins got two unearned runs in the first thanks to two Valpo errors. After Neil Schroth singled, Joe Iacobucci hit a bloop single to center. Schroth hustled to third on the play, and the throw went out of play to move everyone up two bags. Iacobucci then scored the second run when Chris Mitko's grounder to short was mishandled.

Schroth then hit a one-out double in the third and scored on Iacobucci's two-out RBI single to right.

Valpo's bats woke up in the bottom of the third as the Crusaders started the inning with five straight hits. Will Hagel drove in the first two runs with a bases-loaded single to right, and Kyle Gaedele followed with a two-run double to right center to give Valpo its first lead at 4-3. Dearth got out of the inning without any further damage with a fly out, a grounder with the infield in and a pop out.

The Crusaders added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to go up 5-3.

Youngstown State got a run back when Jeremy Banks singled in Schroth. Schroth drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a wild pitch and passed ball. The Penguins then reclaimed the lead in the seventh when Chris Mitko delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded to score Drew Dosch and Schroth.

Valpo, though, reclaimed the lead in the seventh with three runs, two of which were unearned. Gaedele led off with a double, and he went to third on a fly ball to center. Reliever Erik Okleson then hit Bobby Martin with a 1-2 pitch to put the go-ahead runner on. Steven Scoby then hit a chopper to Banks' left, and the first baseman threw wild trying to get Gaedele at the plate. Okleson walked Corey Thibault intentionally to load the bases and put the force in effect everywhere, and Robert Switka came in. Ninth hitter Michael Morman singled in the go-ahead run in the next at bat, and Andrew Bain brought in Scoby with a sacrifice fly.

The Penguins stranded two runners in the eighth, and a double play on a hard shot to the mound hurt a rally chance in the ninth.

Schroth went 2-for-3 and scored four runs, and Iacobucci and Mitko had two hits apiece. Bain and Hagel had three hits for Valpo.

Okleson suffered the loss, allowing three runs on two hits in three innings. Only one of those runs were earned. Blake Aquadro added to his impressive tournament resume by throwing a scoreless eighth.

Kevin Wild allowed two runs in 2.1 innings of relief for Valpo to earn the win. Steve Godawa worked around a leadoff walk to earn the save in a scoreless ninth.

YSU's Tournament Recap:

    #6 Youngstown State 4, #3 Milwaukee 2 (May 25)
    #1 Wright State 12, Youngstown State 0 (May 27)
    Youngstown State 12, #2 UIC 7  (May 28)
    #4 Valparaiso 8, Youngstown State 6 (May 28)

Dayton, Ohio -- Blake Aquadro threw 5.2 innings of shutout relief, and the Youngstown State baseball team got solid contributions throughout the line-up in a 12-7 win over UIC in an elimination game on Saturday in the Horizon League Baseball Championship.

Youngstown State will play another elimination game this evening against the loser of the winners' bracket final between Wright State and Valparaiso.

The Penguins jumped out to an 8-1 lead, and Aquadro brought calmness once UIC got within one after four innings. While the sophomore lefty from Memphis, Tenn. kept putting up zeros, the offense added a run in the seventh and three more in the ninth.

YSU's top five hitters in the line-up combined for 12 hits, eight runs and 11 RBIs. Freshman Chris Mitko drove in a game-high four runs, and leadoff hitter Drew Dosch scored four times. Jeremy Banks and Joe Iacobucci both had three hits and two RBIs.

Jasen Ganek had three hits and scored twice to lead UIC.

UIC starter Tim Suminski struggled with his command early, and the Penguins took advantage by scoring four runs in three hits and four walks in 1.1 innings. A double play got Suminski out of a bases-loaded jam in the first, but he wasn't as fortunate in the second.

After getting the leadoff runner, Suminski walked Jonathan Crist and Dan Hurlimann, and Padraic Williams reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Dosch walked to force a run in, and Suminski handed the ball off to Collin Weyer. Neil Schroth flew out to shallow center for the second out, but Banks drove in two with a single to left. Iacobucci singled on a hard shot right back at Weyer to load the bases, and Mitko came through with another two-run single to left to make the score 5-0.

Turosky allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the second, and an 8-5 double play got him out of a bases loaded jam with one out. A two-run single from Schroth and a sacrifice fly from Mitko in the third put the Penguins up 8-1.

UIC trimmed the lead to 8-4 in the third after a bases-loaded walk and a two-run double by Joe Betcher. The Flames then scored three more in the fourth to cut the margin to 8-7. Ganek doubled in the first run to knock Turosky from the game, and Matt Serna brought in another run on a ground out. Andy Leonard then singled in Ganek with two outs.

Neither team scored over the next two innings, and Iacobucci drove in Dosch with a two-out single in the seventh to make the score 9-7. The Penguins added three more insurance runs with two outs in the ninth. Iacobucci brought in Dosch with a sacrifice fly, Schroth scored on a wild pitch and Mitko drove in Banks.

Aquadro was not charged with a run in his 5.2 innings of work. He allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out two in his first win of the year. Suminski dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

Aquadro continued his recent hot streak in May. He entered the month with a 9.80 ERA, but he has allowed just five earned runs over his last 23.2 innings. He's pitched in all three of YSU's games in the tournament and has allowed one unearned run on six hits over 8.1 innings.

Guins take it!! 12-7. Everything happened that needed to for us. Very balanced. Hits when they needed it, relief when needed, and defense when needed. In the ninth alone, they turned a double, and had a monster throw from 3rd to get the runner at 1st for the final out.

UIC clawed their way back, but YSU had a big 9th ...now up 12-7 with UIC batting in the ninth.

Guins hitting today ...up by a score of 8-4 after 4-innings. Injury break right now, as Crist made a nice tag at the plate & looks to be out of the game after the collision. 9 hits for YSU today. Great production to score 8 off of that.

well, I really thought we could take these guys, but even if we had a bullpen, we would have been down 5-zip. On the bright side, Valpo knocked-off UIC ...giving us only 1-game today.
