Youngstown State University head baseball coach Rich Pasquale has added Ed Marko to his staff as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the 2012 season.

Marko, who was most recently serving as an associate scout for the Colorado Rockies, comes to YSU highly experienced coaching in both the collegiate and summer ball ranks.

"I'm extremely excited to add Eddie to our Penguins baseball family," Pasquale said. "In addition to his knowledge of how to run a quality pitching staff, he has tremendous connections throughout the baseball world that will help us in recruiting. Our program will definitely benefit with Eddie on board."

Marko has coached a national championship team at the junior college level while producing two NJCAA All-America pitchers, seven all-conference pitchers and four all-region pitchers. Thirty-eight pitchers he has worked with have been drafted, including three in the first round.

He got his coaching start at the University at Buffalo in 2006, and he went on to coach the next two seasons at Grayson County College in Texas. With Marko heading up the pitching staff, the Vikings won the 2008 NJCAA National Championship. In 2007, with current Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim closer Jordan Walden on the team, the Vikings had a staff ERA of 2.99.

Marko served as the pitching coach the next two seasons in the Cape Cod League, which is one of the top summer leagues in the country. He coached the Bourne Braves in 2008 and the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in 2009. Current Chicago White Sox reliever Chris Sale was on that Y-D staff. Marko was the pitching coach for the Laconia Muskrats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League in 2010.

Sale was drafted 13th overall by the White Sox in 2010. Other first-round picks to have worked with Marko include Kyle Gibson (2009 by the Minnesota Twins) and Victor Black (2009 by the Pittsburgh Pirates). Gibson was rated the No. 32 prospect by MLB.com prior to the 2011 season.

As a player, Marko pitched collegiately for Cleveland State and the University of Texas-Pan American. He then pitched professionally for four years in independent leagues, including three in the Frontier League.

He earned his degree in general studies from UTPA.

Marko takes over for Dan Lipari, who resigned to pursue opportunities outside of coaching.

Marko inherits a pitching program at YSU that currently has four former hurlers pitching in the minor leagues. Justin Thomas is pitching at the AAA level in the Pirates Organization, Eric Marzec is pitching at the A level in the Milwaukee Brewers system, Aaron Swenson is pitching at the A level in the Baltimore Orioles organization and Phil Klein is pitching in the Rookie Arizona League in the Texas Rangers organization.

If this game is telecast locally in Iowa but is not available on the internet, why exactly should we care?

Two reasons:

1. Season coming quickly.

2. This is an NBC affiliate. Chances are a deal can be reached with WFMJ.

Also, the game will be on-line.

YSU Penguin Athletics / WFMJ: Snow and Louis Leave Team
« on: July 06, 2011, 06:01:25 AM »
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – In just a month it's reporting day for the Youngstown State football team with practice starting a day later.

Just like other programs around the country, there will be some changes for the new season and the Penguins are no different.

David Rach of South Range High School, who left the program prior to spring practice, is back taking part in the summer voluntary workouts.

Rach started every game last year and was the team's third leading tackler.

Leaving the program is receiver Diont'e Snow and cornerback Randy Louis.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Scalzo: Rach ready to return to YSU squad

By Joe Scalzo

Youngstown

A few weeks ago, David Rach had just finished his final exams after a tough — and football-free — spring semester. He headed back to the weight room and was greeted by a group of former teammate who couldn’t wait to bust his chops over missing three weeks’ worth of spring practice.

“Yeah, they were messing around, kidding me about my fresh legs and my fresh body,” said Rach, a YSU linebacker who quit the team before spring practice. “The guys pretty much acted like I never left.”

By that point, Rach was toying with the idea of coming back. But he needed to know the team wanted him back.

They did.

“That’s part of what made it so special,” said Rach, a South Range High graduate who will be a senior this fall. “I was away the whole spring and the guys still treated me like a teammate.”

Rach’s addition was offset by two departures on Tuesday, as senior cornerback Randy Louis and senior wide receiver Dionte Snow left the team, according to a report on WFMJ-TV.

Louis started eight games last fall and was expected to contend for a starting spot this fall, although the Penguins picked up a key transfer in recent days in former Miami Hurricane CB Devont’a Davis. Davis has enrolled and attended his first class at YSU on Tuesday.

“I came here to compete for a starting job and I think I’ve got a pretty good chance,” Davis said by phone on Tuesday afternoon. “YSU gave me the opportunity I want and I think I can help out the program.”

Davis, who redshirted last season and will have four years of eligibility, is from Gainesville, Fla. but he’s not worried about being so far from home.

“I’m a man, I can deal with pressure,” said Davis, who plans to major in sociology. “I’ve been in pressure situations all my life, so it’s not a problem.”

Snow mainly played special teams his first two seasons and did not see action last fall.

Rach started all 11 games last fall and was third on the team with 64 tackles, second on the team in tackles for loss (five), first in fumbles recovered (two) and tied for first in sacks (two). It was a breakout junior season for Rach, who played sparingly his first two seasons.

“It basically came down to missing the guys,” Rach said. “I left in the spring to primarily focus on academics and I was a little beat up.

“To be honest, I stayed away this spring because I didn’t want to be a distraction to the guys who were working hard and I knew it would be tough to be around it.”

The YSU coaches had planned to move the 6-foot-4 Rach to defensive end, and he’s assuming that’s still the plan.

“I kind of hope so, because I’m eating like a defensive end,” joked Rach, who’s gained about 15 pounds from last year’s playing weight of 230 and plans to add five more. “It might be too late. I might have solidified myself as a lineman, by the way I’m running — or not running.

“Right now, I’m approaching it as if I’m an incoming freshman and I’m at the bottom of the depth chart, trying to work my way up. I’ll try to help any way I can.”

Rach, an education major on track to graduate next spring, plans to teach and coach when his career is over and hopes to staying in the Valley.

“In my opinion, Ohio high school football is the best in the country,” he said. “People argue for Texas and California and I’m obviously partial to this area, but I don’t think it gets any better than here. If I have the opportunity, this is where I’d like to coach.”

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Question about WATTS center

In my opinion, I suspect the Tressel issues have something to do with it. I was hoping the opening would be in July (as it is scheduled to be) and he can come. I know they put the block "Y" up last Monday. To me, that means we are about done  :D

General BS / Re: Facebook?

Career IT guy here, and yet I have never been to facebook or twitter.

The same here. I am so against those things ...especially Twitter. I mean I dislike facebook and how it is changing the landscape, but twitter is absolutely the most useless thing I have ever seen. They dumped tons of money (Soros money) to get web sites to advertise links ...then just kept going. I mean any normal businessman would would have gone bankrupt a long time ago.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Devont'a Davis to Transfer
« on: July 02, 2011, 03:24:56 PM »
I am not as excited as you guys I guess. The article was only on a blog ...not in the paper. Also, Miami's worst need was in the secondary last year, and Davis was no where to be seen on the depth chart (not even #4). Ahead of him was a frosh, a safety converted to CB, and an RB converted as well. I also show activity on special teams in several games for him ... how does he have 4-years left? He was basically cut. I hope he has skills, and not just speed like most of those Florida guys.

I will wait until I hear it from a more reliable source. Two calls to YSU sources and it is news to both of them. Also, I though he was involved in a rape issue? Also, I would rather see him replacing Barnes ...WR is where he belongs.
I  take that back ...that was Jeffery Brown that has legal issues  ...& Jeremy Davis that is the Miami WR. Sorry. Although he was suspended and asked not to return to the team.

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Youngstown State had 13 student-athletes selected across eight sports to the 2011 Spring Academic All-Horizon League teams. That was the second-most honorees among league schools.

YSU had two four-time selections among the group. Track and Field standouts Adam Kagarise and Alisha Anthony were both named to their respective teams for the fourth time in their YSU careers.

Men's golfer Spenser Sulzener was a three-time All-Academic selection while Phil Klein, Amanda Carpin, Lyndsie Hall and Samantha Formeck were all two-time honorees.

YSU's spring academic selections were Klein (Baseball), Vicky Rumph (Softball), Jordan Ingalls (Softball), Sulzener (Men's Golf), Formeck (Women's Golf), Jeff Hanselman (Men's Track and Field), Kagarise (Men's Track and Field), John Seaver (Men's Track and Field), Anthony (Women's Track and Field), Carpin (Women's Track and Field), Hall (Women's Track and Field), Samantha Hamilton (Women's Track and Field) and Melanie Prelec (Women's Track and Field).

It marked the first time that two softball players were named academic all-conference in the same year. It was also the first time since 2008 that a softball player had made the squad.

Butler led the 89 all-league honorees with 17 selections, followed by YSU, which had 13 picks. Ten Loyola student-athletes earned places on the teams, while UIC and Valparaiso each had nine student-athletes.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.

Did she not lead the nation in scoring up to the point of the injury?

Lyczkowski and Meech combine for the best VB player (L on offense and M on defense). Hennessey was the programs top pitcher. Arm that lasted forever, needed little rest, and had good power and accuracy. Could hit the ball as good as any outfielder. 1st-round draft pick.
