Big D - if you come back to this thread:

Just got done watching Lehigh - Bucknell.  How heavily was CJ McCollum recruited by the Horizon and MAC schools?  Shame that kid got out of Ohio.   Did everyone miss on the kid, or was it as much academics as hoops that took him to Lehigh?

I was wondering the same thing. It said he is an accounting major. I find it hard to believe it was academics. Maybe just the prestige factor?

Thanks for the congrats, I will pass it on to my daughter. The penguin light was at the seasonal sporting goods store that always shows up in the SP Mall for Christmas, it was across from what would be the old food court where the chicken place was/is.

The light is a cube, (like a piece of crystal) with Pete on the top & inside, when you turn it on, it lights up & also throws Pete up on the ceiling. I take a tube from a roll of paper towels, which covers up the light, but still throws Petey up on the ceiling.

The "bigs" don't start paying attention until you cross over 7' these days. At that point you begin to train exclusively for the high jump. I think the NCAA record is 7' 9.75". Also, if he is starting for a great baseball program like Fitch ...then we may want to recruit him there as well.

How old is he lecture? I see the junior national champ won the event with a jump of 6-11.75  last season. Could be something there. It would be great to be able to snare a national champ for our men's program.

Wow! I guess being new to this site doesn't entitle me to a response to my questions. If you state that Cook is out for the Spring you should bring some facts to back it up. What RB had surgery?

welcome guinman. I thought Cook had a lifting incident? I am not certain if he is the one that needed surgery ...I hope not.

Penny. My daughter was married a couple of seasons ago (October). She went to OSU, so did the entire bridal party. I had to suffer with the OSU game on TV during the reception, but we did finally watch the myYTV game afterwards. Now she is due to turn me into a grandfather (already!?#@%$^$), and on the day just prior to the UNI game to boot!! If she is late, it will work perfectly ...that is our bye week. I will have to buy Penguin baby gear, as I know that a parent would not want to upset "grandpa" by not coming over the baby wearing the gift :) I also have a light that shines Pete on the ceiling ...would make a good nightlight.

Then in 2013, we have a new tailgater as well.

The Youngstown State men's basketball team recently concluded its 2011-12 season which was highlighted by record-breaking accomplishments on the individual, team and conference level.

The following is a list of achievements during the 2011-12 men's basketball campaign:

• The Penguins finished the season with an overall record of 16-15 and a 10-8 mark in the Horizon League. The 16 wins are the most since 2000-01 and the overall record marks the first winning season since the same year.

• The Guins' eight-win improvement in the Horizon League marks the best one-year turnaround since the league went to 10 teams and the second-best in league history. YSU also lost three other games by a combined seven points.

• Head Coach Jerry Slocum moved into fourth place on the school's all-time wins list with 74. He enters 2012-13 needing just two more victories to move into third and five more to move into second place.

• YSU set a Horizon League mark with five different players earning the league's player-of-the-week award. Senior DuShawn Brooks (Dec. 5), junior Damian Eargle (Jan. 2), senior Ashen Ward (Jan. 9), junior Blake Allen (Jan. 23) and sophomore Kendrick Perry (Feb. 6) all won the award this season.

• For the second straight season, the Penguins set the school's single-season 3-point record with 270 made 3-pointers. The old record of 235 was set in 2010-11. They also tied the mark for most 3-point attempts of 708, which was set in 2010-11.

• The Guins won 10 home games for the first time since 2006-07 and won six road games, including four in league play.

• The 2,095 points scored marks the third straight season the Guins have scored at least 2,000 points and is the highest season-point total since the 2000-01.

• The Guins' 164 blocks ranks as the second-highest single-season total in school history. The school record is 166 set in 1982-83.

• Nationally, the Penguins ranked among the best in several categories. YSU ranked 12th with 8.7 3-pointers made per game, 14th with 5.3 blocks per game, 23rd with just 11.2 turnovers per game and 34th with a .381 3-point percentage.

• Their 201 steals marks just the eighth time in school history that the Guins recorded at least 200 steals in a season.

• For the first time in school history, four players finished with at least 50 3-pointers made. Blake Allen had 91, Kendrick Perry made 54, Ashen Ward made 53 and ior DuShawn Brooks had 50.

• Sophomore Kendrick Perry was named to the All-Horizon League First-Team. He is just the second YSU player to receive the honor and the first sophomore in school history to earn first-team all-conference accolades. The only other player to earn First-Team All-Horizon League was Quin Humphrey in 2005-06 and 2006-07.

• Junior Blake Allen ranked 16th nationally with 2.9 3-pointers made per game and with a .429 3-point percentage.

• Kendrick Perry led the league in scoring (16.8 ppg) and steals (2.4) in conference play, becoming just the fifth player in Horizon League history to accomplish that feat.

• Kendrick Perry also led the Horizon League in overall-games scoring with 16.8 points per game.

• Junior Damian Eargle set the Horizon League single-season blocks records for all games and league-games only. Eargle finished with 116 blocks, including 65 in Horizon League play.

• Blake Allen led the Horizon League with 91 3-pointers made and 2.9 3-pointers made per game. His 91 3-pointers also ranks second on the YSU single-season list, just one shy of the record of 92 set by Craig Haese in 2000-01.

• Blake Allen's 3-point percentage of .429 ranks seventh on the YSU single-season list.

• Damian Eargle led the Horizon League and ranked third in the country with 3.7 blocks per game.

• Kendrick Perry set the YSU single-season record for steals with 74 and also ranked 15th nationally with 2.4 steals per game.

• Senior Ashen Ward turned in a career-best season averaging 10 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Ward also made a career-high 53 3-pointers and finished his career with 150, which ranks fifth all-time.

• Senior DuShawn Brooks .420 3-point percentage ranks 10th on the YSU single-season list.

• Kendrick Perry's 521 points is the most scored since Quin Humphrey's 584 in 2006-07 and the most by a sophomore since Reggie Kemp scored 564 in 1989-90.

• The Penguins won a postseason game for the third time since joining the Horizon League. YSU defeated Green Bay, 77-60, in the first round of the tournament at the Beeghly Center. It marked the third home tournament game in the last six years. The Penguins also beat Valparaiso and Detroit, who both advanced to the Horizon League Tournament title game.

Indianapolis -- Youngstown State women’s basketball player Brandi Brown has been named Second-Team All-Horizon League for the second straight season, the league office announced on Monday.

Brown, a junior forward from Pomona, Calif., averaged 16.3 points and 9.1 rebounds this season as the Penguins’ leader in both categories. She earned the sixth-most votes in the field, making her the first member of the second team. The Horizon League’s coaches, women’s basketball sports information directors and a member of each of the conference’s media markets voted on the postseason awards.

Brown ranked sixth in the Horizon League in both scoring and rebounding, and she also ranked sixth in defensive rebounding, eighth in offensive rebounding, 10th in free-throw percentage and 15th in 3-point percentage.

He did 6'8" at the YSU qualifier at WATTS on last weekend in January. Over 20'5" on the long-jump as well. In addition, they finished second in the 4x400. Is he a senior? He will most likely be a decathlon for us. I think they call them decathletes/pentathletes/etc. This is what we need to get that elusive men's conference crown. Those events are worth so many points, you virtually have to win in 5 other events just to stay even.

Any updates?

I just watched the YSU vs. MSU replay (from last season's opener) on B10 Network. They really liked Berassa and Bryant.

YSU was on BTN today. They still have it in the archives. Looked like an offensive juggernaut, but gave up a late lead, and fell in 10 against Iowa.

I understand that both Thorton and Keyes are returning. Remember that coach H had Keyes go to CC. He was really a standout for a frosh. Thorton left the program, but never left YSU, he is still eligible. If he gradated, he will possibly have 2-years. He was a FB, with nice hands as well. Cook will be out for Spring, but should be back for fall camp.

You mean that guy that went 2 for 11 against us a couple weeks ago? Sorry ...token pick as everyone likes Valpo this year. Has a rebounding edge though. Actually the best player I saw all year was that center from Green Bay. Then again, I only saw these guys against the Guins.

I'm sorry.  I don't really know how well Ryan Broekhoff performed against YSU.  I just know that he won the POTY award by almost twice as many votes to Ray McCallum.  I don't know where Perry finished.

FYI, I'm pretty sure no player has ever won HL POTY from a team that didn't finish in the top 2 of the HL.

You're correct. Look at YSU's Brandy Brown last year in the ladies. Although this year the club was much more balanced, so she does not stand a chance. Although she was preseason POY this year.

5053
3. We are going to have the conference preseason player-of-the-year.

When did Ryan Broekhoff announce he was transferring from Valparaiso to YSU?

I really thought we would beat Akron today in the battle of the win-less today ...they are a bad team. I guess we are worse.

5055
I turned it off when I knew there was no chance. We were simply beaten. That being said, I am very happy with the team and coach S.

Now the season is over, we are losing two first-rate starters. Let's talk about what we need in the off-season. A few things:

1. Fans. We need people to show up. Which I think will happen next year, after what coach S has done.
2. At least one big player.
3. We are going to have the conference preseason player-of-the-year.
4. We play a much more exciting brand of ball now.
5. Work on defense.
6. Consistency.
