YSU Penguin Athletics / Spring Camp Update
« on: April 03, 2012, 09:42:27 AM »

The Youngstown State football team passed the halfway point of spring drills on Monday with their eighth practice of the camp. YSU was crisp in an hour-and-45-minute workout held at Stambaugh Stadium.

It was the Penguins' first practice since Saturday's major scrimmage. Besides individual work, YSU spent time on punt coverages and 20 minutes on team drills.

During Monday's extended individual period, the team focused on some of the situations that arose during the scrimmage. Head Coach Eric Wolford said the Penguins will take what was taught at today's practice and have an extended team period on Wednesday.

YSU's practice was shorter than normal because the team watched video of the scrimmage beforehand. Practice started at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

Wolford said he has been impressed with a variety of players so far this spring. He said on the offensive line, Andrew Sinko and Fred Herdman have played well stepping in for injured linemen Lamar Mady and Andrew Radakovich.

The Penguins return to practice on Wednesday. The workout is scheduled to begin a 4 p.m.

Season tickets for the 2012 season are on sale now. Fans can purchase tickets by calling (330) 941-1978.

Speaking of Pace. Did you guys see Torian Pace? He is much leaner, and quicker. I mean he is still a good 225-230. Man I am excited to see what he can do this year!

Torrian Pace also tore it up today. Big strong RB, breaking a lot of tackles

I was there last week and coach M said that he really needs to get Pace into the mix. I think he saw a few things last year hat made him realize the need for a larger back.

Lack of experience among defenders is a concern

YOUNGSTOWN

Trivia time.

Q. How many YSU defensive players are left from the Jon Heacock era?

A. Three. Defensive tackles D.J. Moss and Kyle Sirl and linebacker Dom Rich.

Q. How many of them are seniors?

A. None.

Q. OK, well, how many career starts do those three players have — combined?

A. Four. Rich started the last three in 2010, while Moss started one game in 2010.

Q. So you’re saying YSU’s defense doesn’t have a single defensive player who’s been here longer than two seasons, and the three defenders who have been here the longest didn’t start a single game last season?

A. Correct.

Q. Um, isn’t that a problem for a team with national championship aspirations, particularly one with a new defensive coordinator?

A. Well, maybe “concern” is a better word than “problem.”

Following YSU’s first spring scrimmage on Saturday, defensive coordinator Joe Tresey was asked if he’s ever coached a team with so few holdovers.

“Probably not,” he said. “But you know what? You don’t think about it. You’ve got who you’ve got and you’ve got to coach them up.

“We’ve got to get them better every day. When you think about things like that [the lack of experience], then your mind’s not in the right place.”

YSU’s offense dominated the first half of Saturday’s scrimmage, which wasn’t a surprise considering the Penguins are returning every starter — and every coach — from arguably the best offense in the FCS last season. But the Penguin defense played better in the second half of the scrimmage, which encouraged Tresey.

“Obviously, we’ve got a long way to go but we did some good things,” Tresey said. “We need to become more physical, need to learn to play with our bodies, do a better job of getting off blocks and, of course, our open-field tackling [was poor] at times.

“It’s a whole new defense, a whole new install. There’s going to be more thinking involved than you want. We’ll become more comfortable as we play with each other and learn the defense.”

YSU returns four regular starters from last year’s defense — senior DT Aronde Stanton, senior FS Jeremey Edwards and sophomore LBs Travis Williams and Teven Williams — and all but Edwards played with the first team on Saturday.

Junior college transfers Chris Charles (FS), Twin Fernandes (SS) and Julius Childs (CB) and sophomore CB Devont’a Davis (five starts last season) made up the first team defensive backfield Saturday. Rich took the third linebacker spot and senior DE Josh Fenderson, senior DT Nick DeKraker and redshirt freshman DE Trevor Strickland joining Stanton on the line.

Of those 11 starters, just three came to the program out of high school, which shows how much the roster has turned over in two years. But unlike the past two years, they won’t need to rely on August newcomers to fill key spots.

Still, if the Penguins are serious about making a run at the national championship, the defense will need to do more than just keep YSU in games. Saturday was the first step in a long process.

“They’re grasping it and they’re working hard,” YSU coach Eric Wolford said of his defensive players. “One thing with Coach Tresey, he’s going to hold them accountable to give an effort and work hard.

“We’re close.”

YSU Penguin Athletics / Scalzo: YSU’s Perry, Zuiker to transfer

Youngstown State men’s basketball players Nate Perry and Cale Zuiker are leaving the team, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Jeff Goodman.

Perry, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard from Greensburg, Pa., appeared in 24 games last season, averaging 2.2 points and 0.9 rebounds per game. He averaged 8.1 minutes per game this season, the second-highest total among reserves behind Josh Chojnacki’s 9.6.

Perry originally joined the team as a preferred walk-on two years ago and was on scholarship this winter.

Zuiker, a 6-foot-9 freshman power forward from Marshfield, Wis., played in just 14 games, averaging 3.2 minutes per game last season. He was also on scholarship.

Neither Perry nor Zuiker responded to an interview request.

A Youngstown State spokesman had no comment about the report. YSU coach Jerry Slocum is in New Orleans for the Final Four and was not available for comment.

The departures will leave the Penguins with two extra scholarships and the coaches are expected to bring in at least one junior college transfer, most likely a post player. Division I men’s programs are allowed 13 scholarships.

YSU signed two players in November: Bobby Hain, a 6-9 forward from Jupiter (Fla.) High, and Ryan Weber, a 6-7 forward from Roncalli High in Indianapolis. Those two players received the scholarships left by departing seniors Ashen Ward and DuShawn Brooks.

College Basketball Insider Jeff Goodman's initial list of D-1 transfers includes several from the Horizon League including our own Nate Perry and Cale Zuiker. Also Richie Edwards from Valpo (we could use him), Brito and Kadima from Loyola and also a few from Wright St.
Also UWM coach Jeter also linked to the Miss St job.

What are your thoughts on nPerry IP?

Always a popular topic here Bison. You see, our primary football rivals are Akron and Kent State. Both of which are 30-minutes (or less) away and both in the MAC. Marshall was a good rival in the 90's and they are in cUSA. It is not that we do not like the Dakota schools ...they add power to the conference. However, the idea of having 2 or 3 away games that we can travel to each year is very appealing to many of us. The ESPN MAC coverage is good, but on weeknights. The championship possibilities will not be there. Many Pros ...and many Cons.

I know this. I went to the last game we played against Kent. There was 32k in the stands ...and most of it wore red & white. The last time we played in Fargo ...there was only a couple of bus/planes worth of YSU fans in attendance (about 200).

Kent took the trophy that day, & now we have no way to get it back. Our other trophy game is against Akron for the the Steel Tire. We have that one in our possession. If we could just play Kent & get the Schwebel's trophy back ...I would be happy.

Welcome aboard Bison. I don't know ...the Dakota's add some flavor & ORU has been a quality program for a long time. The Summit did lose a lot when Valpo left though. YSU was in the Summit as well. ORU also fits with the Horizon's "religious" flavor of old. At one point, all the teams in the Horizon were religiously affiliated in some fashion ...mostly Catholic.

Butler: Lutheran
Dayton: Catholic
UDM: Catholic
Xavier: Catholic
Notre Dame: Catholic (although we did not have them for basketball)
Creighton: Catholic
Loyola: Catholic
LaSalle: Catholic
Marquette: Catholic
St. Louis: Catholic
Oral Roberts: Christian (was already a member). I wonder what they are missing that they cannot come back? They left in 1987.

Oakland has come a long way. They have strong woman's programs & a quality men's basketball program.

Indianapolis, Ind. -- For the second straight week and the fourth time in her career, senior Haley Thomas has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Thomas helped Youngstown State (15-6, 2-1 Horizon) go 4-1 last week, including a Horizon League series win against visiting Butler over the weekend. Gardner led Loyola (6-12, 2-1 Horizon) to a 2-1 record in the Ramblers League-opening road trip to Wright State.

Thomas, who collected Player of the Week accolades last week as well, hit .500, collecting a hit in all five of the Penguins' games. The senior tied the Youngstown State career runs record at 126, crossing home plate five times.

On March 24, Thomas tied two Youngstown State single-game records, tallying four hits, including three doubles, in the Penguins' 6-5 victory over Butler.

The following day, Thomas moved into a tie for third on the YSU career list with her 18th career home run; the long ball also tied Thomas atop the career runs list.

Youngstown State will head to Akron for a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday, March 27, before hosting Cleveland State for a Horizon League series over the weekend. The Penguins and Vikings will play a doubleheader on Friday, March 30, before wrapping up the three-game set on March 31.
