YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Horizon League Expansion
« on: May 11, 2012, 06:50:57 AM »
I have no idea how much Robert Morris values its football team, but the NEC conference just got their automatic bid into the FCS playoffs last season (a joke but that is not the point here.)  So if RMU left the NEC to join the Horizon League, they would either have to abandon football or find another spot for their football team.  Only option would seem to be dropping football scholarships and joining that pathetic Pioneer Conference (which will also get an automatic bid once the playoffs expand to 24 - an obscene joke.)  None of us know the true priorities of RMU officials.

Basketball rules conference affiliations ...football is not a money-maker.

Valparaiso, Ind. -- Senior Haley Thomas became the YSU all-time hits leader as the Yo.ungstown State softball team advanced in the Horizon League Tournament with an 8-4 win over Green Bay on Thursday afternoon at the Valparaiso University Softball Field.

The Guins, who picked up their first tournament win since 2006, improve to 29-20-1 while Green Bay was eliminated and ends its season with a 23-28 mark.

Thomas, who has 232 career hits, broke the record of 231 by Associate Head Coach Tiffany Patteson from 2003-06.

Freshman Kayla Haslett, a 2012 Horizon League All-Newcomer Team selection, scattered eight hits in four innings pitched to pick up her eighth win of the season.

Sophomore Casey Crozier threw three scoreless innings of relief to earn her third save of the year.

Trailiing 2-0 in the bottom of the second, Thomas laced a two-out double to left-center field to score Sarah Gabel and Haslett to tie the game at 2-2.

After Caroline Krombach reached on an error and stole second, Thomas scored on a passed ball and senior Jordan Ingalls, who went 2-for-3, singled to left to plate Krombach and give the Guins a 4-2 lead.

Green Bay quickly tied the game at 4-4 before the Guins added one in the bottom of the third on a single by Courtney Ewing that plated Haslett, who doubled.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ingalls doubled and eventually scored on an illegal pitch to give the Guins a 6-4 advantage.

An RBI-single by Sarah Gabel and a sacrifice fly by senior Kristen Philen added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth and put the Guins ahead, 8-4.

The Guins will play the winner of the UIC/Valparaiso elimination game Friday at Noon (EDT).

Indianapolis, Ind -- Youngstown State senior Haley Thomas (Simi Valley, Calif.) was named the 2012 Horizon League Softball Player of the Year and Head Coach Brian Campbell was tabbed the 2012 Horizon League Coach of the Year in a vote by the league's head coaches, the league announced on Tuesday (May 8).

Senior Jordan Ingalls (Bolivar, N.Y.) was named All-Horizon League First-Team along with Thomas, and junior Vicky Rumph (Mount Forest, Ontario) was selected All-Horizon League Second-Team.

Freshman Kayla Haslett (Baden, Pa.) was named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team.

Campbell, who is in his fourth season at Youngstown State, guided the Penguins to their most overall wins since 2004 with 28 victories. He led the Penguins to a seven-win improvement in Horizon League play with a record of 12-10, and YSU's fourth-place finish was four spots higher than the league's coaches predicted in the preseason. Last season, the Guins placed eighth with a 5-16 Horizon League record.

Thomas, who set the YSU single-season hits record with 70, is the first YSU player to win the player-of-the-year award since Amanda Berry in 2003. Overall, she led the Horizon League with a .440 batting average, 70 hits and 17 doubles; was second in on-base percentage (.497) and steals (14) and ranked third in slugging percentage (.717) and total bases (117). In league play, Thomas led the circuit with 35 hits and 53 total bases. She was third with a .443 batting average and a .671 slugging percentage.

Ingalls is just the third YSU player to be named All-Horizon League First-Team in consecutive years (2011 and 2012). The other two players were McKenzie Bedra (2007 and 2008) and Tiffany Patteson (2003 and 2004). Against league opponents, Ingalls ranked second in the conference with a .458 batting average and 33 hits. Her .639 slugging percentage was fifth in the league and her .488 on-base percentage was seventh. Overall, she ranked third in the league with a .409 batting average and second with 67 hits. Her 34 RBIs were eighth-best in the league and her .530 slugging percantage was tied for 10th.

Rumph, who was a 2010 Horizon League All-Newcomer Team pick, batted .351 overall and .319 in Horizon League play. She carried a .536 slugging percentage against league foes and belted three of her four home runs in conference play. Overall, she ranked seventh with 35 RBIs and tied for 10th with a .530 slugging percentage.

Haslett is the first YSU pitcher to be named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team since Karlie Burnell in 2004. She went 7-7 overall with a 3.47 earned-run average and 31 strikeouts. She picked up four wins in Horizon League play with a shutout and 18 strikeouts.

The fourth-seeded Penguins take on fifth-seeded Butler in the first round of the 2012 Horizon League Tournament, Wednesday, May 9, at Noon in Valparaiso, Ind.

I am a bit disappointed by softball's league play this year. We defeated some very good competition this year ...but never seemed to have wins over those top-tier teams (Army, Farleigh Dickenson, swept by Toledo, and RMU). Then we were a bit less successful than I expected to be in the HL (no wins against Valpo or Loyola). Does anyone here really follow softball, as maybe I am seeing things incorrectly here. Clearly this is one of the top seasons (in terms of record) we have ever had. Nice early start, with great warm-weather tournaments. Quite exciting. Solid batting averages & pitching stats. You have to be very happy with the direction the team is going. Maybe I just expected too much?

4971
Congrats to the girls. Understood it's weak League. But it is a League.....and they won. They did what they should do.

Like to see some athletes at the NCAA...qualifiers.....(or maybe some folks are content to be "happy" with a League Title in a bad League).

Pizza. At least we are happy about something ;)

You should know that a team could finish last in a conference and still have qualifiers. Track is a team sport with individual events, which is why it is such a great sport. You qualify for regional by finishing in a certain time, throwing a certain distance, or finishing in a certain place. What place your team finished at has nothing to do with that. However, when it is conference time ...that is a different story. So be happy with what we have got. Lady Pen track and field rules!!!!!! Men were great as well.

PS: If you want to complain about something ...complain about a soccer field being built when we need facilities for a sport we can be competitive in. Also we have 4 ...possibly 5 qualifiers. I think Pompeo qualified ..that will make 5.

no one has really been able to convince me this is smart move for butler

Seems to be a big 3-point guy. Nice pick up for Slocum. Shows the strength we have in the better conference. Anyone have an inside info?

Indianapolis -- Youngstown State’s Jeremy Banks and Blake Aquadro have been named the Horizon League Baseball Players of the Week for the period of April 23-29, the conference office announced on Monday.

Banks earned Batter-of-the-Week accolades for the third time this season while Aquadro picked up Pitcher-of-the-Week honors for the first time in his career. Both players played a big part in YSU’s first-ever series sweep of UIC over the weekend.

Banks batted .636 with seven hits in 11 at bats in three games for YSU, reaching base at least twice in each game. He had three RBIs in YSU’s 11-3 win on Friday and added three more in YSU’s 9-0 win in the series finale. Banks was 4-for-4 in the finale and recorded his 200th career hit with an eighth-inning single. Despite missing 14 games with an injury, Banks ranks among the top five in the Horizon League in doubles and RBIs and is sixth in home runs. His .400 batting average, .657 slugging percentage and .492 on-base percentage are tops among all league players with more than 100 at bats.

Aquadro pitched the Penguins’ first nine-inning complete-game shutout since 2004 against UIC on Sunday. The junior southpaw scattered eight hits and struck out three while throwing 144 pitches. Only one of the Flames' hits went for extra bases.

Youngstown State will try to remain hot when it plays Pittsburgh on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Eastwood Field.

ELPENGUIN, what did they say about scheduling games in Florida? I'd love a chance to see the Penguins play down here.
In Strollo's interview he mentioned that they will definitely try for a football game in Florida, as many of the players want to have their families see them play. I heard that we are doing a two-game (IA/FBS) season with Wisconsin and FAU next year. That will be tough on us. We will need to win the conference, or one of those two FBS games. Nice income though. I do not see the room on the schedule either.

Youngstown State freshman sensation Silviu Mistreanu was named men's first-team All-Horizon League today. On the season, Mistreanu was 14-5 this spring while posting a 6-1 mark in Horizon League action. He played his last 15 matches at No. 2 singles posting an 11-4 mark. His lone Horizon League defeat came in three sets (1-6, 7-5, 8-10) against Detroit's Alex Latosinsky on March 24. Mistreanu has won five straight matches and six of this last seven since losing to Latosinsky.

Youngstown State's other "freshman phenom" is the Lady Pens Marta Burak. Burak was named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year, the conference office announced Friday evening. Burak was also named first-team all-league. She is also the first Penguin to earn a yearly from the league. Despite our successes, no former Penguin had been named either Player or Newcomer of the Year. The 15-year-old Ukraine native was 7-1 in Horizon League play, and won eight of her final 10 matches this year.

Not to be overlooked, junior Lauren Hankle was a league second-team pick. Hankle won seven of her final 10.

Combined Hankle and Burak were 34-18 for the season, 24-12 in dual action and 13-3 against Horizon Leauge foes playing all 26 matches at No. 1 or No. 2 singles.

I wish they can add a men's soccer program.... we could probably play Akron, a perennial soccer team, if we did....

You don't think that we are building a facility for women's sports do you? I have heard two reasons for the facility:

1. It is part of a women's sports complex ...will have 3 facilities ...soccer, softball, and a women's athletics center (building). Because of it's association with women's athletic, there is $$$ available.

2. It is the last facility we need to join the MAC and adding men's soccer is the key focus.

We do need one more men's program ...many say hockey, but we need a nationally-sanctioned sport. So it has to be swimming or soccer. Also, the plan that I have (which is old) does not have a track.  However, it is pre-WATTS.

I favor the soccer field, softball, with massive expansion of the track facilities. The women's athletics building is not really needed for any conference we are looking at. If we were trying to appeal to a larger conference, it would help us. Besides, we do not have the funds to staff it. It would become an office for part-time coaches, and a female weight-room ...and we should have the room for that in Stambaugh and Beeghly.
