Offensive Player of the Week
QB Nic Baker, Southern Illinois
5-9, 204, Jr., Rochester, Ill. (Rochester)
Baker completed 34-of-48 passes for a school-record 485 yards and three touchdowns in a game which featured two of the league's most prolific quarterbacks.  Baker also rushed five times for 22 yards and led a comeback from an 11-point deficit, in which the Salukis briefly regained the lead, but fell just shy of victory versus Northern Iowa, 37-36.  Baker's 507 yards of total offense are tied for the 7th-most in the league's 38-year history and are the third-most in a league game.  His 485 passing yards are the 5th-best in Conference history and are the second-highest in a league game. His passing-yard total was the most in the FCS last Saturday and is the third-highest FCS single-game output in 2022. His total offense figure (507) is only two yards shy of the FCS single-game high this season.

Defensive Player of the Week
DE Dylan Wudke, Youngstown State
6-4, 251, So., Miamisburg, Ohio (Miamisburg)
Wudke had two sacks, five solo tackles and a forced fumble in the Penguins dominate 45-24 win over South Dakota on Saturday at Stambaugh Stadium. His sack-fumble in the second quarter led to a touchdown in the final minute of the first half to put the game away.

Newcomer of the Week
WR Desmond Hutson, UNI
6-3, 215, Fr., Raytown, Mo. (Raytown High/Iowa)
Hutson may have only caught two passes for the Panthers’ in their 37-36 win over No. 20 Southern Illinois, but both receptions played a critical role in UNI’s late comeback win on Saturday in Carbondale. Hutson caught 2 of QB Theo Day’s career-high 5 touchdown passes, including the game-winning score with 5:55 to play to give the Panthers a one-point lead. Hutson ranks second on the UNI roster with four total receiving TDs this season, which is 7th in the MVFC.

Is anyone watching this quarterback Schuster for North Dakota? Guy is very good and quite accurate on his feet when he throws. It’s too bad he hast to run as much as he is because his line isn’t helping him out that much.

Kendyl Clarkson has been named the Head Women's Lacrosse Coach at Youngstown State University, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ron Strollo announced on Tuesday.

Clarkson is just the second head coach in program history, replacing Theresa Walton. She joined the women's lacrosse coaching staff as an assistant in July 2019 and helped lead the Penguins to a share of the Mid-American Conference title in the program's second season.

"I would like to thank Ron Strollo, Executive Director of Athletics, as well as Tory Lindley, Deputy Athletics Director, for the opportunity to lead the YSU women's lacrosse program," Clarkson said. "A big thank you to President Jim Tressel, his passion and commitment to this community and University has helped shape our players, program and love for being a Penguin! I also want to add a personal thank you to all those who have reached out and supported me throughout this process, and a special thank you to my mentor and friend, Mike Peterson. The last thank you and most important goes to our Penguin Lacrosse players. The dedication and love you have for this game as well as for being great teammates and even better people is unmatched. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been with this program since its inception and look forward to continuing our hard hat culture of championship effort."

In 2022, the Guins finished with an 8-2 league mark to receive their MAC title. In the middle of the pack at the start of April, the Penguins caught fire winning their final five contests to tie Robert Morris and Central Michigan atop the MAC standings. In its final five regular-season games, the Guins won four road contests, including wins at CMU and RMU for the program's first win against those two-MAC powers. At Robert Morris on the final day of the regular-season, the Penguins overcame a four-goal deficit to stun the Colonials. At the outset of the campaign, YSU was picked to finish fifth in the six-team conference.

"I'm excited to announce that Kendyl Clarkson will be our new women's lacrosse head coach," Strollo said. "We obviously knew what we had in Kendyl because she was here to start this program and helped recruit the student-athletes we have here on our campus. She was a major part of the success we've had and helped guide us to a conference championship in our second year. We're just excited to have someone of Coach Clarkson's caliber to lead our program in the future. We are confident that she will continue our focus on the experience and development of our student-athletes both on and off the field."

The program's first year was in the spring of 2021. With COVID-19 restrictions, the Penguins played conference games only. YSU picked up the first program win in school history beating Detroit Mercy and knocked off Kent State as well.

Clarkson came to Youngstown with six years of head coaching experience at the Division III level and a highly accomplished background as a student-athlete.

Clarkson was the head coach at Virginia Wesleyan during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The Marlins had back-to-back seasons with at least a .500 record for the first time in more than a decade under Clarkson's leadership. She recruited the largest two incoming classes in program history, and the Marlins had their biggest roster in program history in 2019.

Prior to her time at Virginia Wesleyan, Clarkson had a successful four-year run at Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. She was named the 2017 USA South Women's Lacrosse Coach of the Year and led the Monarchs to a 32-32 record in four seasons from 2014-17. MU was 1-11 the season prior to her arrival, and Clarkson led the team to records of 5-12, 10-5, 8-8 and 9-7. She coached a total of 11 all-conference players as she became the winningest coach in program history.

Clarkson got her coaching start as an assistant coach at St. Bonaventure in 2012-13. She served as the Bonnies' offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator, and she was also charged with individual skill enhancement and film exchange.

As a student-athlete at Division III Buffalo State, Clarkson led the country in assists per game in 2010 and 2011, and her 88 assists in 2012 tied the Division III all-time record. As a senior, she led the Bengals to their first NCAA Tournament appearance as well as a victory in the opening round. She finished her career ranking second in NCAA history with 240 career assists, and her 385 career points ranked in the top 20.

Clarkson earned her bachelor's degree in individualized studies with concentrations in education and coaching from Buffalo State in 2012. She was inducted into the school's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021.

Jim Tressel Leaves Legacy

Tressel brought a winning attitude to the Mahoning Valley when he took charge of the Penguin football program in the mid-1980's. He gave the people something to rally around in a time of need and helped keep the spirits of everyone in the community high.
He came to Youngstown in 1986 and within two seasons the Penguins were in the NCAA Division I-AA Playoffs. The playoffs, once a dream, became commonplace for YSU. In his tenure, Youngstown State appeared in the playoffs 10 times and won four national championships.
The first national title came in 1991 and began a run of four straight title-game appearances. The march to the crown in 1991 was magical as the Penguins won eight straight to end the season. YSU won at Georgia Southern on Nov. 2 and was never to lose again that season. In the playoffs, the Penguins beat Villanova, Nevada-Reno and Samford before beating Marshall in the title game.
After losing in the title game to Marshall in 1992, the Penguins were back in 1993 to finish 13-2 and beat the Herd 17-5 in the title game.
In 1994, the Penguins were unbeaten in 15 games finishing 14-0-1. YSU tied Stephen F. Austin in the season opener and then won a school-record 14 consecutive games to earn a repeat championship. In the playoffs the Penguins beat Alcorn State, Eastern Kentucky and Montana en route to the title game. YSU beat Boise State 28-14 to earn its third national title.
In 1997, the Penguins were back in the national title hunt. In the playoffs, YSU beat Hampton, Villanova and Eastern Washington to advance to the title game. In a tight defensive game, YSU beat McNeese State 10-9 to earn Tressel's fourth title.
En route to the 1999 National Championship Game, YSU set an NCAA Division I-AA record winning 15 consecutive playoff games after beating Montana, North Carolina A&T and Florida A&M in the preliminary rounds. In the championship game, YSU lost to Georgia Southern.
In his final year in 2000, YSU finished 9-3 and qualified for the playoffs for the 10th time.

Youngstown State's defense recorded three interceptions and eight break-ups while Jaleel McLaughlin rushed for more than 200 yards as the Penguins defeated Duquesne, 31-14, in the 2022 season opener at Stambaugh Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

McLaughlin highlighted the Penguins' offense with 203 rushing yards on 20 attempts, netting three touchdowns. On the receiving end, Bryce Oliver caught six Demeatric Crenshaw passes for 58 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Devin Johnson picked off the first two interceptions of his career, and senior Quincy Lenton led the Penguins with eight tackles, including one-for-loss. Griffin Hoak also secured an interception for YSU and had three tackles on the day.

For Duquesne, quarterback Joe Mischler threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Abdul Janneh had two touchdowns on the day and 121 receiving yards.

Duquesne came out quick to start the game, scoring a 45-yard passing touchdown within the first two minutes of play. YSU answered with a touchdown of its own when McLaughlin ran three yards across the goal tying the game 7-7 with 8:18 left in the first quarter.

On Duquesne's next drive, Hoak intercepted Mischler and set up the Penguins' offense at midfield. YSU came up short on a fourth-and-seven attempt on that drive, but the YSU defense forced the Dukes to punt on their next possession.

The Penguins tried to take the lead with 8:41 to play in the half on a 45-yard Colt McFadden field goal that had the distance but was wide left.

After Johnson's first interception, the Penguins were set up in Duquesne territory. The offense came alive as McLaughlin, in true-McLaughlin fashion, hurdled over a defender to get into the endzone for a 13-yard touchdown which lifted the Penguins to a 14-7 lead with 6:43 left to play in the first half.

After a missed field goal by the Dukes, the Penguins got another shot to score before halftime with 1:27 on the clock and at their own 20. McLaughlin broke a 43-yarder to the Dukes' 21 yardline with 18 seconds before the half. The Penguins took a few shots at the endzone before settling for a 39-yard McFadden field goal to take a 17-7 into halftime.

The Penguins went three-and-out to open the second half, and on Duquesne's following possession, Mischler connected with Janneh in the endzone for a 16-yard touchdown cutting the Penguins' lead to just three, 17-14, with 9:35 remaining in the third quarter.

On the following possession, Crenshaw connected with receiver Max Tomczak for a 41-yard gain, the longest catch for the Penguins on the day. The Penguins tried for a field goal on that drive but muffed the snap giving Duquesne possession at its own 34-yard line.

With 12:43 left in the game, Johnson picked off Mischler for the second time giving YSU possession at the Duquesne 41-yard line.

On the ensuing drive, McLaughlin ran the ball to get the Penguins into the red zone before Crenshaw capitalized on the short-field position with a 2-yard touchdown run to get the Penguins on the board for the first time in the second half with 9:58 left to play, increasing YSU's lead to 24-14.

Late in the fourth quarter, McLaughlin broke loose on a 54-yard touchdown scamper to put the Penguins up 31-14 with 4:48 left to play.

Youngstown State hosts Dayton, Saturday, September 10, at Stambaugh Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

This week's Missouri Valley Football Conference players of the week include TB Jaleel McLaughlin of Youngstown State; LB Adam Bock of South Dakota State; S Ryan Cole of Indiana State; PK Ryan O'Grady of Indiana State; CB/RS Montrae Braswell of Missouri State; and WR Naseim Brantley of Western Illinois.

Offense:  TB Jaleel McLaughlin, Youngstown State
Co-Defense:  LB Adam Bock, South Dakota State | S Ryan Cole, Indiana State
Co-Special Teams:  PK Ryan O'Grady, Indiana State | CB/RS Montrae Braswell, Missouri State
Newcomer:  WR Naseim Brantley, Western Illinois

Offensive Player of the Week
TB Jaleel McLaughlin, Youngstown State
5-9, 183, Sr. (Marshville, N.C./Forest Hills/Notre Dame (Ohio) H.S.)
McLaughlin rushed for 203 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns in YSU's season-opening 31-14 win over Duquesne. McLaughlin scored on runs of three, 13 and 54 in the victory over the Dukes. It was his most rushing yards since the 2021 season-opening win against UIW.

Co-Defensive Player of the Week
LB Adam Bock, South Dakota State
6-1, 215, Jr. (Solon, Iowa/Solon H.S.)
Bock registered a game-high 13 tackles for a South Dakota State squad that did not allow a touchdown and limited Iowa to only 166 yards of total offense in a narrow 7-3 loss on Sept. 3. Bock also forced and recovered a fumble that thwarted a Hawkeye drive in the red zone late in the third quarter to keep SDSU within striking distance.

Co-Defensive Player of the Week
S Rylan Cole, Indiana State
6-0, 205, So. (McCordsville, Ind./Mt. Vernon H.S.)
Cole picked off two pa$$es, including the game-securing interception in overtime to lead Indiana State past North Alabama in the Sycamores’ season opener. The sophomore matched a career-high with eight tackles, while adding 2.5 tackles-for-loss, two interceptions, and two pa$$ breakups. His first interception set up the short field for Indiana State’s go-ahead touchdown pa$$ in the fourth quarter, while he secured the final interception on the last play of the game on the desperation heave toward the end zone. He nearly added a third interception in the first half off a tipped ball. Cole’s 2.5 tackles-for-loss led the Sycamores to a Curt Mallory-era 15.0 tackle-for-loss game on the afternoon as the Sycamores limited the Lions to just eight total rushing yards.

Co-Special Teams Player of the Week
CB Montrae Braswell, Missouri State
6-0, 190, Jr. (Avon Park, Fla.)
Braswell broke loose for a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of MSU's road win at UCA. The return came on the heels of a UCA's first scoring drive of the game and Braswell's big play made it 27-7 at the time and seemed to put the game out of reach. It was Braswell's third career kick return TD and the seventh-longest kickoff return in Missouri State history. He averaged 65.0 yards on two kickoff return attempts in the win (the other was 32 yards).

Co-Special Teams Player of the Week
PK Ryan O’Grady, Indiana State
6-1, 180, Fr. (Lockport, Ill.)
O’Grady was clutch in his first career collegiate game as the freshman placekicker went a perfect 3-for-3 on his field goal attempts in Indiana State’s 17-14 win. He had joined the team midway through the preseason training camp and impressed the ISU coaching staff with his ability to connect in the clutch. It showed on Thursday night at Memorial Stadium as he knocked in field goals from 22 and 26 yards in regulation, while his 25-yard attempt went down the middle in overtime to secure the 17-14 win. O’Grady’s three-field goal day made him the first ISU placekicker to converted three attempts in a game since Jerry Nunez made a trio of field goals twice back in 2018.

Newcomer of the Week
WR Naseim Brantley, Western Illinois
6-4, 200, Gr. (Farmingdale, N.J./Sacred Heart/Howell H.S.)
Making his Leatherneck debut, Brantley had a big night for Western Illinois in the season opener at UT Martin. He had six catches for 171 yards as well as touchdown catches of 51, 44 and 32 yard. Brantley also became the first Leatherneck with at least three receiving touchdowns in a game since Jaelon Acklin had three against South Dakota in 2017. His 171 yards receiving made him the first WIU receiver to have over 150 receiving yards since Dennis Houston had 175 against Eastern Washington last year.

After leading the Youngstown State men's basketball program to three straight winning campaigns for the first time in nearly 40 years and reaching the postseason for the second time in three seasons, Head Coach Jerrod Calhoun has received a contract extension, YSU Executive Director of Athletics Ron Strollo announced.

The new agreement is a five-year deal that extends Calhoun through the 2026-27 season.

"We are pleased with the direction of our men's basketball program under the direction of Coach Calhoun," Strollo said. "This commitment just reflects our support of our men's basketball program, and the priority we put in the stability of our head coaching positions.

"Coach Calhoun and his staff have developed a great culture among our student-athletes, both academically and athletically, and our student-athletes and our coaches have made a tremendous impact on our community. He has done a great job building outstanding young men, and I think our community has really supported Jerrod and Sarah and their family.

"We're excited about the upcoming season and what else lies ahead in the future."

Calhoun is the first coach in YSU's Division I history to take the program to multiple postseason appearances in the 2022 The Basketball Classic and the 2020 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, which was canceled due to Covid-19.

He has led the Penguins to three straight winning seasons for the first time since 1982-85 after posting a 19-15 mark in 2021-22. Over the last three years, the Penguins have won 52 games, which matches a school mark for most victories in a three-year span (1982-85).

"I want to thank YSU President Jim Tressel, Athletics Director Ron Strollo, and our Board of Trustees for their trust in me to lead our team and their commitment to our men's basketball program," Calhoun said. "My family and I love being here at Youngstown State, and the Youngstown community has truly embraced us. We are grateful for the opportunity to lead this program and look to build upon the successes we have achieved here."

Calhoun has also guided six All-Horizon League selections in five seasons, and became the first coach in 21 years to have multiple players earn all-conference laurels in the same season.

The 19 wins in 2021-22 were also the most since 2000-01 and set a school record for most wins as members of the Horizon League. The Penguins also set a school record for most conference wins with 12.
Last season, Youngstown State also tied the Division I record for most home wins with 13 and secured the program's second postseason berth in three years with an appearance in the inaugural The Basketball Classic. The Penguins also won their second postseason game with a 70-65 victory over Morgan State.

Dwayne Cohill led the Penguins with 14.9 points per and a .835 free-throw percentage and was named to the All-Horizon League Third-Team. Cohill ranked third in the league in free-throw percentage and 10th in scoring. He scored in double figures 25 times and had eight games of 20-or-more points.
