YSU Penguin Athletics / St. Francis (Pa.) 23, Youngstown St. 49
« on: October 23, 2011, 08:34:48 AM »
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP)—Jamaine Cook rushed for 162 yards and four touchdowns to lead Youngstown State to a 49-23 win over St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday.

The four scores were a career-high for Cook and the most for a Penguins running back in one game since 2001. Youngstown State piled up 450 yards rushing, with Jordan Thompson adding 135 yards and a touchdown on four carries. Thompson’s 95-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter tied a school record.

Youngstown State (4-3) led 42-3 at halftime as Cook scored on runs of 1, 4, 8 and 26 yards. Kurt Hess, who passed for 172 yards, threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Christian Bryan.

The Red Flash did their best to keep up, gaining 410 yards total offense. John Kelly passed for 288 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for another score for the Red Flash (1-7), who have lost five in a row.

Cleveland -- The Youngstown State soccer team's Horizon League match at Cleveland State this evening has been postponed because of an inclement forecast. The game will be played at Krenzler Field tomorrow at 7 p.m.

The Penguins are 3-8-3 overall and 0-3-2 in Horizon League play. The Vikings enter the match 8-6-1 and 1-3-1. YSU is one game behind Cleveland State and Green Bay for sixth place. The top six teams qualify for the league tournament. YSU plays at Loyola on Sunday before closing out the regular season on Oct. 28 against Valparaiso.

The inclement weather in the Midwest has already led to the Milwaukee at Loyola contest being postponed earlier today. That match will also be played on Thursday.

Youngstown -- Youngstown State junior forward Brandi Brown has been selected as the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year in the conferences 2011-12 preseason poll that was released Wednesday.

Brown, a second-team all-conference pick last season as the league's top scorer, edged Green Bay senior Julie Wojta by one point for the preseason player-of-the-year nod. Brown finished with 260 points, and Wojta and Wright State's Molly Fox were the only other two players to finish with at least 140 points. All five First-Team All-Horizon League members last season were seniors.

Brown (Pomona, Calif.) scored 597 points in 30 games last year for a league-leading 19.9 points per game. She ranked fourth in rebounding with 9.2 per game and tied for the league lead with 13 double-doubles. Additionally, her .472 field-goal percentage ranked seventh. Brown was even better in league play, averaging 22.6 points and 9.6 rebounds while shooting 51.4 percent from the field.

On the national level, Brown ranked 15th in scoring and 49th in rebounding. She was one of only 10 players in the country to rank in the top 50 in both categories.

Brown, Wojta and Fox were joined by Cleveland State's Shalonda Winton and UIC's Jasmine Bailey on the first team. Second-team members were Angela Rodriguez (Milwaukee), Yar Shayok (Detroit) Shamiea Green (UIC), Monica Albano (Loyola) and Betsy Adams (Valparaiso).

Fresh off its Sweet 16 run last season, Green Bay was chosen as the preseason favorite in the team poll. The Phoenix received 29 out of 30 first-place votes for 299 points, and Cleveland State was a distant second with 238 points. Wright State, Butler, UIC and Milwaukee all finished within 35 points for the third through sixth spots. Detroit was picked to finish seventh by a sizeable margin, and Loyola, Valparaiso and Youngstown State rounded out the bottom three. The Penguins defeated Valpo in both meetings last season and came within a bucket of forcing overtime at Loyola in the opening round of the Horizon League Tournament.

Head coaches, sports information directors and select media members voted in the poll.

The last Penguin to earn conference player-of-the-year honors was Brianne Kenneally in 1999-2000 while YSU was competing in the Mid-Continent Conference. YSU's last first-team all-league performer was Jen Perugini in 2004-05.

Youngstown State begins the 2011-12 season at West Virginia on Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Injury Report for Saturday
« on: October 19, 2011, 06:23:51 AM »
Senior TE David Rogers will likely miss Saturday’s game with a sprained left foot. “He probably could play,” Wolford said. “It’s nothing significant. Nothing broke.” Sophomore Carson Sharbaugh will start in Rogers’ place.

Sophomore RB Jordan Thompson (shoulder) will also likely sit out but should return against Western Illinois on Oct. 29. Sophomore Adaris Bellamy is No. 2 on the depth chart.

YOUNGSTOWN - Eric Wolford, the second-year coach of the Youngstown State football team, has felt all along that he and his coaches had the Penguins pointed in the right direction.

Kansas State coach Bill Snyder - Wolford's former boss - told him as much when the two spoke last Thursday.

"He said, 'Wolf, if you're that close in all those games, you're doing the right things. Just keep sawing wood. Just keep chopping and it's going to happen,' " Wolford said. "And what do you know? It happened on Saturday."

Two days after Snyder offered his former assistant words of encouragement, Wolford's Penguins proved the 72-year-old coach correct. YSU rallied for its first road victory in Wolford's two seasons, beating Southern Illinois, 35-23, at Memorial Stadium in Carbondale, Ill.

The victory made Wolford 6-11 in his two seasons with the Penguins. Nine of those losses have been by a total of 48 points. Seven of those defeats were by a touchdown or less and YSU had the lead at some point in all but one of those narrow defeats.

It was simply a matter of time.

"Quite frankly, we expected to win (at Southern Illinois)," he said. "We really did. I know some of you guys thought the season was over, but these team is going to fight and scrap. We've proven that time in and time out. I'll let you guys know when it's over, trust me."

YSU (3-3, 2-2 Missouri Valley Football Conference) hosts Saint Francis, Pa., at 4 p.m. on Saturday. It will be the first meeting between the Red Flash (1-6) and Penguins since 1953.

The Penguins are feeling much better about themselves today than they were a week ago after back-to-back losses to MVFC rivals Indiana State and South Dakota State and a trip to Carbondale looming.

Southern Illinois led YSU, 17-7, at halftime, but quarterback Kurt Hess threw touchdown passes to wide receivers Christian Bryan and Jelani Berassa and tailback Jamaine Cook ran for a touchdown in a 21-point third quarter as the Penguins took control.

YSU put the game away when cornerback Josh Lee recovered a Southern Illinois muffed punt in the end zone with 2:43 to play.

"(YSU punter) Nick Liste had a real good punt and the dude muffed it," Lee said. "I was slowing down because I didn't know what happened in the back end, but then I seen it and I seen Nate Schkurko run to it and I just jumped over him and landed on the ball in the end zone."

The victory was the Penguins' first away from Stambaugh Stadium since 2009.

"It's always good to win on the road," Lee said. "That's what championship teams have got to do. They've got to win on the road. You've always got to steal one."

Wolford said he considered Southern Illinois one of the top "two or three" teams in the MVFC when the season began.

"That's a good team," Wolford said. "You saw what they did against North Dakota State the week before."

On Oct. 8 in Carbondale, the Salukis held the undefeated Bison scoreless in the first half and without a touchdown until just 6:51 remained in the game. NDSU wound up winning, 9-3, but finished with just 210 total yards. YSU, with 464 yards against SIU, more than doubled that output.

Lee said the victory might be a turning point for the Penguins.

"Going into Southern Illinois (against) a tough team, away, and winning big like that, that's a major turning point for this team," he said.

As Wolford and Snyder both said, it was just a matter of time.

"All you can do is keep working hard and doing things right," Wolford said. "We're not doing things by the seat of our pants. We're not goofing around. We're not doing all the types of things that are distractions you have in college football. We don't have any of those.

"Our guys say, 'Yes, sir' and 'No, sir.' They work hard, they do things right and they're on time. Are they perfect? By no means, but they're doing things right."

And in Wolford's experience, programs that operate that way eventually enjoy success.

"I'm used to, when you have a program and you do things right, good things are going to happen. Sometimes it takes a little bit longer, but it's going to happen."

ISU easily over WIU

Northern Iowa over South Dakota State 31-14. They were merciless against that young QB. Multiple sacks, fumbles, and INT's.

Slow week.

I know it is televised, but we out-of-towners do not have it. So if you could update us on how we look, that would be great. Also, any Internet video?

Walsh Jesuit QB Nick Wargo verbally committed to play football at Youngstown State on Tuesday.

Wargo (6-3, 215) is the YSU third commitment of the 2012 class. He also had an offer from Cincinnati.

The other 2012 recruits are Hickory OL/DL Matt Bell and Lexington safety Tyler Jackman.

Max Prep/Scout.com: Youngstown State added the commitment of Walsh Jesuit quarterback Nick Wargo last weekend. The senior pledged to the Penguins while visiting for the game against South Dakota State. Wargo has led Walsh Jesuit to a 5-1 record to date, and the school is ranked number five in the latest computer rankings.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Scalzo: Wolford looks for answers in Year 2

YOUNGSTOWN

Ex-Youngstown State coach Jim Tressel may not have attended Saturday’s halftime ceremonies honoring the 1991 national championship team, but his presence was still felt.

Like his predecessor, Jon Heacock, Penguins coach Eric Wolford is learning what it’s like when you live in the shadow of Tressel’s success.

“There’s a standard around here,” Wolford said at the beginning of this year’s training camp. “You guys know what the standard is. I don’t shy away from it. I embrace it.

“We’re going to get back to the standard that’s acceptable around here.”

Since that is the standard Wolford embraced, that is the standard by which this year’s team must be measured. And after Saturday’s 35-28 loss to South Dakota State — YSU’s second straight in conference play and third overall — it’s clear the Penguins are nowhere close.

“We just haven’t arrived yet,” Wolford said. “It’s very difficult, as you guys can tell.

“I’ve coached a lot of football. I’ve been through a lot of hard times. Good and bad. And I can assure you that this is a difficult loss for myself, our players and our program.”

Tressel won two games in his first year in 1986, then won eight in 1987, beginning a run of 10 playoff appearances in 13 years. After Tressel left for Ohio State in 2001, Heacock made the playoffs just once in his nine seasons and was replaced by Wolford last season.

While last year’s 3-8 record could be attributed in part to the huge amount of roster turnover that occurred in Wolford’s first year, this year’s 2-3 start is more puzzling.

And more disappointing, said senior DT Andrew Johnson.

“It does because I feel like we’re a lot more talented,” said Johnson, one of four co-captains. “I think we have a lot more skills at different positions. I don’t feel like we should lose against any team in this conference. That’s not being arrogant or anything; that’s how I feel our talent level is.

“We’ve just got to show up.”

Considering the team’s youth and inexperience, particularly on defense, it’s clear that the coaches and players should have done more to temper expectations. (Several players even talked about wanting to win a national championship this year, when competing for a playoff spot seemed like a more reasonable goal.)

Making matters worse, YSU still has November road games against the two best teams in the conference: North Dakota State and Northern Iowa.

Last year’s team was marked not just by its close losses, but its ability to stay together and stay competitive even when it was clear that there was nothing to play for but pride. This year’s team needs to do the same.

That’s what makes Saturday’s road game against Southern Illinois so crucial, said junior RB Jamaine Cook.

“You know what happens when things are going downhill like this,” said Cook, another captain. “We’ve got to keep guys together. Because either we’re going to come together or we’re going to fall apart.”

Like last season, YSU’s most immediate concern is with its secondary. The Penguins have often looked helpless against spread offenses and allowed a redshirt freshman quarterback in his third start, South Dakota State’s Austin Sumner, to torch them for 345 yards and four touchdowns.

If you’re wondering how that happened, consider this: Youngstown State started three freshmen linebackers, two freshmen cornerbacks and two safeties, junior Sir Aaron Taylor and senior Scott Sentner, who were starting their first career games.

“We got to find some guys at the right spots somewhere,” Wolford said. “I don’t know how we’re going to do it. But we’ve got to do something.”

In Saturday’s postgame press conference, Wolford said the coaches will make some depth chart changes this week. Ultimately, though, there’s not much they can do.

Wolford and his staff may eventually build YSU into a perennial playoff contender, but it’s clearly not going to happen this year.

“It’s a process,” Wolford said. “I’m very impatient, just like a lot of people. But I don’t think it’s going to be an overnight process.”
