YSU Penguin Athletics / Brooks leads Youngstown State over Detroit 64-61
« on: December 02, 2011, 06:53:34 AM »

Trailing 55-50 with 5:40 to play, Youngstown State got hot at the right time, knocking down three three-pointers to snatch a 64-61 win over Detroit at Calihan Hall.

Youngstown State (5-1, 1-0 Horizon) collected a win in its Horizon League opener for the first tme since 1999, with DuShawn Brooks leading the way. Brooks, who had the key block in the Penguins' one-point victory on Saturday, caught fire down the stretch, scoring 11 straight points to lift YSU ahead of Detroit (3-5, 0-1 Horizon).

After Evan Bruinsma gave the Titans the 55-50 with a long baseline jumper, Brooks knocked down the fourth of his six threes to bring YSU within a possession. Chase Simon split a pair of free throws, but Brooks responded with a jumper to bring YSU within 56-55 with 3:10 remaining.

Donavan Foster was the next Detroit player to try and seal the result, draining a three as the shot clock wound down, restoring a four-point advantage. Once more, Brooks answered with another three, his fifth of the night, to keep it a one-point game.

Two missed Titan free throws gave Youngstown State a chance at the lead, and they found the hot hand, with Brooks knocking down the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:05 left in the game. Kendrick Perry would make 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to help seal the result, with Ray McCallum's attempt from 60 feet at the horn falling short.

McCallum and Simon worked to carry Detroit throughout the night, each scoring 21 points, with McCallum collecting a double-double by adding 10 points. However, the duo could not overcome Brooks's career-high 24 points.

Youngstown State will be on the road on Saturday, taking on Wright State at 3 p.m. ET from the Nutter Center, while Detroit will look for a home split when Cleveland State visits Calihan Hall.

So, I know everyone has opinions on what they would like to see change (or not change) with 2012. However, let's here it. Any player changes, graduation concerns, coaching/staff concerns, etc.

That issue that guinpen brought up, that Scalzo's article does not mention Carson Sharbaugh concerns me. He has been a starter since day-1. He can do anything. His technique is good (blocks and routes), and his receiving is solid, size is fantastic. This type of strength and speed is hard to find at our level. This may have just been a mistake in Scalzo's article.

Indiana State RB Shakir Bell, a Walter Payton Award finalist and the nation's leading rusher, has been named the Missouri Valley Football Offensive Player of the Year in a vote of league coaches, media and sports information directors. Bell is the first Sycamore to win the top offensive honor since 1991 (Derrick Franklin) and the first-ever sophomore to win the award in league history. Bell had a nation's best 1,670 rushing yards and broke the Indiana State single-season rushing record.

L.J. Fort of UNI has earned the league's Defensive Player of the Year honor. He's the fourth Panther in five seasons to win the league's top individual award on defense. He ranks second in the nation with 151 total tackles and second in the nation with six forced fumbles.

North Dakota State head coach Craig Bohl is the league's Bruce Craddock Coach of the Year. Eargle Has Chance For 1,000
In under three seasons of playing college basketball, junior Damian Eargle has scored more than 600 points with 655. Eargle needs just 345 more points to reach 1,000 for his entire career, which includes 268 points during the 2008-09 season at UNC-Greensboro. Last season, Eargle ranked second on the squad with 339 points for an average of 11.3 points per game.

Perry Nets Career Scoring High
Sophomore Kendrick Perry scored a career-high 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field to lead the Guins to a 76-69 win over Samford on Nov. 12. Perry's 28 points are the most points scored by a sophomore since Doug Underwood scored 28 against Green Bay on Jan. 29, 2003. He also made four 3-pointers with four assists and four steals.

Big Road Win
YSU's season-opening win at Samford was the first time since 2000 the Guins won a season-opener on the road.

Most Points In Season Opener Since 2003
The Guins' 76 points against Samford in the season opener on Nov. 12 are the most points scored in the first game of the season since they scored 80 against Niagara in 2003. The Guins lost that game, 89-80, Nov. 22, 2003.

Guins Road Warriors
Last season, the Guins played 16 games in the friendly confines of the Beeghly Center. In 2011-12, the Guins will have to take to the road for 16 games and host just 13 contests. It is the fewest number of home games since playing 12 in 2005-06. The Guins also played just 13 in 2007-08.

KP3 Most Frosh Assists in 20 Years
Kendrick Perry's 122 assists in 2010-11 marked the third straight season a YSU player has recorded at least 100 assists in a season. His 122 assists were the most by a freshman since Lacy Jones' 132 in 1990-91 and are the fourth most by a YSU freshman.

Record-Setting Guins
The Guins set school records with 235 3-pointers made and 708 3-pointers attempted. Six different Penguins made at least 20 3-pointers in 2010-11. The Guins also tied a single-game record with 14 3-pointers made against Butler on Jan. 9, 2011.

Ending Strong
Over the final 12 games of last season, sophomore Kendrick Perry was one of the Guins' most productive players. Perry is averaged 13.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game during that span. He scored in double figures nine times and is shot 49.2 percent from the field and 36.5 percent from 3-point range. He also owned an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.6.

Allen Had Strong Second Half

He shot 41.2 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from 3-point range during that time. Allen made 39 of his 92 3-point attempts in the team's final 17 contests. In the first 13 games of the year, Allen averaged 3.1 points per game and made just 8-of-28 (28.6 percent) from beyond the arc.

Eargle 10th Nationally
Junior Damian Eargle ranked 10th in the nation in blocked shots per game with 3.0. His 91 blocks are the second most in a single season. The only other player in school history to record at least 85 blocks was Ricky Tunstall, who posted 138 in 1982-83.

Last to Score 30
With 30 points against Loyola on Jan. 9, 2010, DeAndre Mays set a career-high and became the first player to score at least 30 points since Keston Roberts scored 31 against Detroit on Feb. 27, 2007. Mays' performance was the 10th time under Jerry Slocum a player has scored at least 30 points in a game. YSU had just 10 30-point plus performances from Feb. 1988 to Dec. 2005.

Weber averaged 11.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game and was named Honorable Mention all-county.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Brown Goes Over 1,000 Points
« on: November 26, 2011, 08:00:20 AM »
Los Angeles -- Youngstown State junior forward Brandi Brown cemented herself among the best players to ever wear YSU red and white and led the Penguins to a 64-50 win over LMU in front of an enthusiastic group of supporters on Friday.

Brown's 1,000th career point gave the Penguins a 7-6 lead, and they never trailed again. Brown, who grew up about an hour from Los Angeles, finished with a game-high 19 points and 14 rebounds.

YSU sophomore Heidi Schlegel joined Brown in a double-double, posting 17 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.

The Penguins will play the winner between Northern Iowa and Wyoming on Saturday at approximately 6:15 p.m. Eastern.

YSU led by double digits for most of the second half, but LMU cut the deficit to 43-36 with 12:23 left. Brown's layup on a pass from Los Angeles native Macey Nortey put YSU up nine on the next possession, and the Penguins went on to score seven straight points.

YSU's biggest lead came on Brown's final bucket of the game. Her layup at the 3:44 mark on a pass from Schlegel capped another seven-point run that put the Penguins up 62-44.

Schlegel had 13 points and five rebounds in the second half, and Brown matched her with 13 points in the final 20 minutes. Schlegel also had a game-high five assists. Kenya Middlebrooks had 14 points and hit four of YSU"s eight 3-pointers.

Alex Cowling had 18 points and 17 rebounds for LMU.

YSU outshot LMU 40.4 percent to 31.7 percent and outscored the Lions 20-8 off turnovers.

Brown's 1,000th point came from the free-throw line with 15:06 left in the first half, and it gave the Penguins their first lead at 7-6. YSU didn't trail again, and a Kelsea Fickiesen lay-up gave the Penguins a 16-10 advantage with 12:33 remaining.

A Middlebrooks triple gave the Penguins their first double-digit lead with 7:06 left, and her third 3-pointer of the period put YSU up 33-20 at the 3:41 mark. That completed a 12-4 run for the Penguins during which they held LMU without a field goal for five minutes.

Loyola Marymount scored the final four points of the half to cut the deficit to nine at the break.

Middlebrooks led all scorers with 11 points in the first half, and the senior had three of the Penguins' five 3-pointers in the period. Brown had six points and nine rebounds. YSU shot 37 percent as a team to offset 11 turnovers.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Penn State Head Coach Patrick Chambers Q&A
« on: November 24, 2011, 08:55:51 AM »
Q: You were up by 21 and then the lead was cut to nine. Was it a lack of energy? How did Blake Allen and Kendrick Perry contribute for Youngstown State?

A: I would say those two kids are pretty good. I knew they were better than that in the first half. I watched those guys on tape. They were really talented. They can really shoot the ball. That's the same team that beat a good Butler team last year in February. We didn't take them lightly at all. I think they just play harder and (Blake Allen) and (Kendrick Perry), 7-for-12 and 5-for-8. That's impressive. They made some tough shots. It wasn't easy. They made contested shots. There's a lot to learn hear on how to put teams away but let's give (Youngstown State) some credit.

Q: Can you comment on the defense as whole?

A: If you think about it (Blake Allen) and (Kendrick Perry) hit some tough shots at the end of the shot clock. So we played 25-26 seconds of the shot clock doing a pretty good job and they hit big- time shots. Our defense is coming. I think we took a step, but I knew it was going to be a 40 minute game. I knew Youngstown wasn't going to go away. I read up on their coach, he's a terrific coach. He's firey, he's a great leader. He didn't come in here to lose, that's why he got a technical in the first 2 minutes. Trying to motivate his team a little bit, I give him a lot of credit.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Penn State beats Youngstown State 82-71
« on: November 24, 2011, 08:44:38 AM »
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—Tim Frazier recorded his third double-double of the season with 26 points and 11 assists, and Trey Lewis added 12 points off the bench to help Penn State defeat Youngstown State 82-71 on Wednesday night.

The Nittany Lions (5-1) led by as much as 21 late in the first half before the Penguins got hot from long range to get within nine several times, including 77-68 with 49 seconds left off a 3 by Blake Allen. He finished with 25 points and seven 3s.
Penn State 's Matt Glover, left, grabs a rebound against Youngstown State defenders Ashen Ward, rear, and Dushawn Brooks during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game, Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, in State College, Pa. Penn State won 82-71.
Penn State 's Matt Glover,

Youngstown State (3-1) opened the second half shooting 6 of 7 from 3-point territory, including three during the spurt from Kendrick Perry (23 points). He shot 5 of 8 from behind the 3-point arc.

The Penguins, who were picked to finish seventh in the Horizon League, could get no closer against the Big Ten program. Cammeron Woodyard added 10 points for Penn State.

Nearly 4,400 showed up the day before Thanksgiving, though the Jordan Center was quieter than normal given most students were away for the holiday.

Frazier didn’t use the subdued crowd as an excuse for the Nittany Lions’ lack of energy in the second half.

“I think that’s just something we really need to work on … focus on that,” the junior said about closing out opponents down the stretch.

Still, Penn State played well enough in the first half to enjoy a big cushion late. Coach Patrick Chambers’ team shot 56 percent for the game, including 15 of 25 (60 percent) before halftime.

Frazier’s alley-oop pass from midcourt to Ross Travis provided an energy boost with about 6 minutes left for a 14-point lead. Nate Perry answered with a 4-point play after getting fouled on a fall-away 3 from the wing, his only bucket of the game.

“They made shots, contested shots. There’s a lot to learn here,” Chambers said. “We’ve got to put teams away, but let’s get them some credit.”

Chambers planned to have a team dinner on campus Thursday to celebrate Thanksgiving—but not before putting them through a practice. He wasn’t going easy on his players, either, just because it was a holiday.

“Nope, no way,” Chambers said with a laugh. “Good question though.”

Youngstown State junior tailback Jamaine Cook (Cleveland, Ohio) is one of 20 finalists for the Walter Payton Award while freshman wide receiver Christian Bryan (Irwin, Pa.) is one of 20 finalists for the Jerry Rice Award, The Sports Network announced this week.

The Walter Payton Award honors the top player in the Football Championship Subdivision while the Jerry Rice Award goes to the top freshman. This is the first year the Jerry Rice Award will be presented.

Cook is one of seven running backs up for the honor. For the season, he had 271 carries for 1,386 yards and 13 touchdowns. He caught 20 passes for 183 yards and a score. He ranks eighth in the FCS in rushing yards per game at 126.0. Cook rushed for more than 100 yards in eight contests this year and had only fewer than 90 on one occasion. He had career highs in rushes, yards and touchdowns this season after rushing for 1,276 yards on 241 attempts a year ago.

Bryan is one of five wide receivers on a very talented list for the Jerry Rice Award. Of all freshman wide receivers at the FCS level, Bryan ranks first in yards (719), second in yards per game (65.36), second in touchdowns (six) and fourth in receptions (45). He set YSU freshman records for single-game yards and receptions and season yards, receptions and touchdowns.

The Payton Award, in its 25th year, is given to the outstanding player in the FCS, while the Buchanan Award is bestowed on the outstanding defensive player in the FCS. Each award is presented by The Sports Network and sponsored by Fathead.com.

Ballots for the Payton, presented by The Sports Network and Fathead.com sponsors - were sent to a panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries. All four award winners will be announced at the national awards banquet on Friday, Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas - the night before the national championship game.

The winner of the Rice Award, presented by The Sports Network and sponsored by Fathead.com, will be announced at the national awards banquet on Friday, Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas - the night before the national championship game.

A panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries will select the Rice Award winner.

Rice made receiving look effortless during his amazing career in the FCS (then Division I-AA) at Mississippi Valley State University. He was a two-time first-team All-American and finished his career with 310 receptions for 4,851 yards and 50 touchdowns. His 27 TD receptions in 1984 set the NCAA record for all divisions.

Voting for both awards will reflect only the regular season.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Women’s Basketball Falls To American, 48-41
« on: November 22, 2011, 06:03:52 AM »
Youngstown -- Youngstown State junior Brandi Brown scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but the Youngstown State women's basketball team dropped a 48-41 decision to American on Monday evening at the Beeghly Center.

The Guins fall to 2-2 overall while American improves to 3-2 on the year.

Brown came up just one point short of her 1,000th career point.

Although the Guins struggled from the field shooting just 26.8 percent, they never quit fighting on the defensive end and forced 25 American turnovers. However, YSU only converted those turnovers into 15 points.

The second half featured two ties and eight lead changes but the final one came when American's Lisa Strack converted two free throws to give the Eagles a 38-37 lead with 2:53 left in the game. AU's Alexis Dobbs then hit a 3-pointer to put the Eagles ahead, 41-37, with 2:29 to go.

Senior Kenya Middlebrooks made two free throws at the 1:41 mark to get the Guins within two, 41-39, but the Eagles answered again with a 3-pointer from Arron Zimmerman to take a five point lead, 44-39.

American was able to extend its lead to seven, 46-39, after two more free throws from Strack.

Youngstown State's largest lead of the second half was two, 34-32, after Monica Touville nailed a 3-pointer at the 10:44 mark.

The Guins' last lead came at the 3:40 mark after a jumper by Brown put them up 37-36.

In the first half, the Guins shot just 27.6 percent from the field and 21.4 percent from 3-point range compared to American's 42.9 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from behind the arc.

The Guins also committed nine turnovers that led the 11 American points, while only scoring 10 points off of 12 turnovers by the Eagles.

After three lead changes and three ties, American outscored the Guins 14-3 over a four minute span to take a 22-11 with 7:08 remaining.

A 3-pointer by Devan Matkin, a layup by Melissa Thompson and jumpers by Brown and Macey Nortey led to a 9-0 run by the Guins to cut the deficit to two, 22-20, with 2:08 to go before the intermission.

Dobbs nailed a 3-pointer with 1:49 left to push the lead back to five and a free throw from Strack with seconds left was the half's final point, giving the Eagles a 26-20 halftime edge.

The Guins visit Loyola Marymount, Friday, Nov. 25, at 4 p.m. in Los Angeles, Calif.
