Anyone have any info on the team during spring ball. Progression. Thoughts. Player personnel. Coaching. Disappointments. Injuries. Lineman.

I have no information.

Go Guins.

Do we know a time for the Red White game on the 23rd?

I think it opens up the possibility of the OVC and MVFC "partnering" or just flat out combining into a super conference.  This opens up all kinds of possibilities with eastern MVFC teams and OVC teams.  YSU could use some more local rivalries instead of traveling to the Dakota's all the time. Eastern Illinois, EKU, and the 6 eastern MVFC teams would make a good conference or division.

Still in high school and probably running high school track or playing baseball.

Noticing the recruiting of athletes. Track. Wrestling. Etc..  Big change from past recruiting.

Go Guins!

Thoughts on NIL signees today?

Tay'Shawn Trent from Harper Woods HS looks like a nice pick up - WR.

Need OL though!!  Hopefully that has been a priority with returning lineman and some early additions in December.

Saw a post of DP showing up at Kent Roosevelt BBall game to see Desmeal Leigh - 6' 7" Defensive End committed to YSU in the fall.  That is the stuff that opens up the doors.  DP is doing it right. We are not at the NDSU level - yet but I only see this going in the right direction.

I agree with Stick on just about everything. I too always like those thunder and lightning backfields. We had them from 90-96. We also had them for several years under coach Montgomery.

I am not sure, but I do not think #8 can transfer again.

Not sure I am completely with you on the QB situation. A tall QB (with arm and vision) that can get outside is just as effective (with 2-back sets) if mot more so. Not convinced there is ever going to be top-rated medium-to-deep pa$$ing out of Crenshaw.

MVFC Freshman of the year!!  Can't argue with that!  I like what he brings and I think if given time in the pocket he will develop into a better pa$$er - when someone is in your face it is difficult to get to third read that is usually downfield.  Hard to analyze coverages when you have no time in pocket to make decisions.  Not completely his fault that we can't throw downfield to stretch the secondary and linebackers!.

YSU Penguin Athletics / 2021 Football Recap - Spring and Fall

Time to recap the season! Overall, I would give the program a C+ for a final grade.  There were definite highlights to the season and low lights that in many cases, over shadowed the highs.  The fact that 6 teams from the MVFC made the playoffs tells everyone the conference is legit for FCS and the sets the bar for competitive football. Even if they are watered down.  The fact that we beat 3 playoff teams is a plus. We should have been 6-4 this season! The team never quit all year, unlike teams from the Pelini era.  I like what I am seeing in Crenshaw, but we need a solid back-up that offers that same 1-2 punch of being able to throw and run when Crenshaw is not in the game. Having a back up that is one dimensional is an issue and defenses can tee off on the QB.

We have to make sure Jaleel does not leave, rumor has it he is looking to be invited to the NFL Combine?? Not sure that is true but whatever he does, we have to make sure he does not enter the portal, AGAIN! Would like to see two back sets but I will complain about that forever - would also like to see Crenshaw under center more!!

We will need to replace some WR and a tight end.  Tight ends are killers and we need to utilize that position more!

Recruit, Recruit, Recruit and live by the portal and die by the portal.  Have to find OL and DL now to stabilize those positions into the future.  If we want to compete and beat UNI, SDSU and NDSU - the OL and DL have to put on 40 pounds across the board and move like tight ends.  We will not be able to compete in this conference until that happens.  A great OL makes a mediocre RB look great.  If Jaleel had a solid and consistent OL - he would have doubled his yardage!!

Coaching can always be improved and hopefully this staff learned a lot about the MVFC and what it takes to win  in the meat grinder of a schedule. The offseason is when championships are won.  The staff has its first full offseason, let's see how they do!!  I say we need 10 D1 transfers to make an impact next year until recruits can step up.  Pelini era lack of recruiting set this team back 4 years.  I like what DP is doing, heard is out the next two weeks recruiting and hitting it hard and traveling around to get the bodies he needs to win. I like the schedule next year - no UNI or SDSU - time to take advantage of that!

OK...time to chime in.  As with all coaches, I will give DP the time that it takes to build a program from scratch since that is basically what happened - three years. BP left the program in shambles as we all knew during his last year with the team, the product that was on the field could care less about winning or YSU football - a reflection on the coach and the staff that he a$$embled.

Many of you have short memories of the team folding and quitting on a regular basis.  DP walked into a program in demise and under NCAA violations. Regardless of how he got the job, I remember only one other viable candidate that is a graduate of YSU and current high school coach and many of you are complaining about lack of college experience of our current coach and staff??? This is who we have, this is who applied - plain and simple.

This team lacks depth, a problem inherited by DP! We have, maybe, 10-15 players that can play at this level and in this conference. That is not his doing. I will not pa$$ judgement until I see his recruits and if he hits the portal for some transfers that can make an impact.  It will be difficult, but I do believe that the staff has been hitting the recruiting hard and doing it the right way - better than what we have had in the past several years where there was little recruiting and that players were expected to want to come play for BP. This program will get turned around in the off season if it gets turned around at all. Let's give him a full off-season to see if there are improvements with O and D line play!!  Strength, agility, feet, and just a damn hard nosed attitude is what is needed on the line.

Football in general has declined to lowly levels in this area.  Just look at the watered down divisions and the small schools that are still in the playoffs - if we have to rely on Springfield, South Range and West Branch for our recruits, we deserve to lose.  Nothing against those programs, but they might produce one player every 10 years that can play at this level.  Gone are the major big schools in Ytown, so forget the State of Youngstown, it is long gone. Have to make the university attractive to out of state players and with what has been happening on campus, that is starting to happen.  Tear down Kilcawley, redo buildings, make the place somewhere to come to and play football. The people in the area know what YSU has to offer, but people outside the state do not.

Budget - we have always been a low budget program, get over it. Too bad the money that came with DP didn't just go to the football program!!  That is what we have prided ourselves on for years - we are not the big dog in the game but we will give you a Youngstown Tune-up when you come in here - have to get that back.

Keep the players out of the tailgate lot before the game!  If you do allow it - don't let them wear headphones - interact with the crowd!! - pissed me off!!

The Bison are coming to town on Saturday (kickoff 12 noon), and are favored by 17.5 (low IMHO) with an O/U of 47.5 (also low IMHO).

A very nice write-up that outlines how much the Bison program has at stake in this game:

The Bison have the top rushing D and total D. YSU’s defense ranks last. Coming off the Bison’s only loss this season at SDSU one week ago, I don’t see how NDSU doesn’t come out blazing and this doesn’t get ugly. My suspicion is we’re looking at a similar outcome as the NDSU-ISUb game two weeks ago (44-2) except with a few YSU FGs (YSU lost to ISUb 17-28 earlier this season).

Anyone ever see the Mike Tyson vs Marvis Frazier “fight”?

I’d rather think David v. Goliath. Someone have a rock?

Go Guins!
