YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Nit
« on: March 18, 2024, 10:33:48 AM »
The NIT turned into what we expected with a lot of the bigger school turning down invites so now they get a 15-16 Villanova team in and as a #1 seed.  There was no way YSU was getting in the NIT with the changes that were made

Cleveland St. is in the CBI tournament and PFW in the CIT tournament.

From the sounds of it, YSU didn't want to participate in a post season tourney, the mindset sure changed from a few years ago when Coach Calhoun was all about it.

The whole thing is disappointing

I agree and I too am disappointed that YSU is not playing in one of these tournaments.   2nd place in the league should be rewarded.  I really liked the guys and wanted another chance to cheer them on in a competitive enviroment and it's kind of sad that from a selfish point of view I won't get a chance to see a player like DJ Burns compete.

If it's a budget problem then it should be explained by the administration.  Can't see it being a nil issue since all schools would have that criteria.  Hopefully it's not the case that YSU basketball feels that they have moved on from a c.i.t. type of tournament with their recent success which would be ridiculous since it's only been a few years within the last 40 or so as one of the worst in D1.

I'm thinking it's a financial decision which is a shame and shouldn't be a factor that punish the players who worked so hard and the fans who admire this program.   Maybe i'm nieve.

We obviously have length coming back with Dynes and Zorgvol and a few athletic wings in Lovelace and Farmer.   David Wilkerson is supposed to be THE point guard.  That is IF they all come back.  Not sure what the other 3 frosh provide or if they all stay.

Needs.   Another point guard for sure if not two.     Need a couple of guys who can be more consistent from the 3 point line and a power forward/banger .

Big list and a list that would not be any different to what other programs also want.   Coach has shown the last 2 years that he can go into the portal and deliver the goods.

I'm not there yet with the view that the one year type of transfers will hinder YSU from advancing to a NCAA birth opposed to having guys in the program 3-4 years.  I'm all for bringing in talented freshmen and seeing them develop like Michael Akuche did but YSU hasn't historically shown they can.  Maybe an exception was DQ who left the program early although I can't think of anyone else that left and it hurt the program.

I like them both and they both can score the ball .    Got to wonder why they couldn't lead Detroit to more than one win.  Would coach C take a look ?

Disgusting loss and CSU deserved it.  Home floor and CSU best player out. Ziggy and Thompson were sub-standard. Out rebounded and out fought .  Nice season but it seems meaningless as of right now.  Will YSU EVER make the NCAA Tournament ?   Not sure in my life time.

Crowed and DJ Burns showed up and that's about it.
Not sure if or what weenie tournament YSU might go to.

Really like Enaruna and he was a great transfer for CSU.  His achillies heel might be his perimeter game that will more than likely make him an over the seas player. If that area gets better with time then perhaps he'll make the league.   Great at taking it to the hoop.  Like pride said he's the guy we have to slow down.

CSU has a few good knockdown 3 point shooters and the D needs to swarm to these guys.   YSU likes to get into transition and so does YSU so the no-brainer point is that the better defensive team will get the W.

Ziggy and Burns 2nd team.  Thompson 3rd team.  Really can't argue  too much with the guys on 1st team,

Detroit gave Oakland fits before losing and locking down the Horizon league regular season title!  YSU locked in as number two as Milwaukee drills Green Bay!

Never thought Detroit would of made it so close.  Most of us were disappointed in our game against Detroit perhaps the Titans were playing their best basketball late in the season.

In Calhouns post game press conference he kinda mentioned the mix of portal and high school players and that they are excited for one player out of high school.  Does anyone know players name and whether the player verbally committed?  Searching the web and recruiting sites I cannot find any such player.  Any help or am I just reading into things too much.

Elijah Guillory from Moon. He had 39 points in the game Calhoun was at https://x.com/Elijah_g5/status/1762551000034938982?s=20

That's right in Robert Morris' backyard.

Looks like a nice get.   We need a shooting guard that can stretch the floor like Oakland has and this might be the guy.

Can't add too much from comments already posted.  Energy, ugly, and playing down to Detroit's level.   I need to eat my words for earlier saying Rush needs to move in on his attempts.  Glad he can prove me wrong.

During one time out coach Davis of Detroit was just sitting there with an expression like he was auditioning for the walking dead.  I guess a 1-29 record will take its toll.

Burns with another double double and 19 rebounds is dominate.   Coaching staff needs to get Thompson to chill.  No need for getting t's although you still want him to play with that dog in him.

Never know who or who won't return.   I think we all had some surprises last year when some guys unexpectedly left and I'm sure this could happen this spring.  Although in hindsight it worked out for the best.

The first time I heard David Wilkerson's name was during the Detroit game when their announcer said that he was told that he was the potential starting point guard and also coach mentioned  it on one of his conference calls.   Watched some games of Wilkerson on line when he was playing jc ball and I didn't see anything that got me too excited  nor anything that deterred me.    Thompson's a pretty good pg and if this guy is as good or better then i'm excited.

Not sure any of us know much about the other three frosh.  I'm sure there will be some honest conversations  after the season and they'll know where they stand.   Guys don't except scholarships to sit on the bench especially in the portal era.

Always here coach saying he's out recruiting when they're on the road so he's still looking at the hs ranks although the last two seasons he has been  getting upper classmen from the portal and this formula has led back to back 20+ wins.

I'm more than likely putting the cart in front of the horse with Horizon tourney and a possible NCAA birth (pray).
Just excited to see YSU have so much success and it's too bad that I'm almost a medicare recipient for it to finally happen.

Agree 100% on Thompson and Burns.  All the new transfers especially Ziggy and Langdon have been a vital to the program and Farmer has played way better the 2nd half of the season and all he needs is a little more consistency.  Zorgvol also has been decent in his allotted time.
It's too bad that Bates is done as other have said he gave valuable minutes .  Decent shooter and really good rebounder.

I'm sure the team will not take Detroit lightly especially since the Titans have played better and there is a lot on the line when it comes to seating but YSU should be able to win comfortably.

I think sometime we take it for granted that Coach has taken this program to the top of the league and has done it twice the last two seasons with all new players.  There's a lot of basketball still to be played but I can't wait to see what he does in the portal and recruiting after March.   Exciting times to be a penguin.

I thought the same thing when Thompson went iso on the last 3 possessions it was like they did last year with Cohill.
Probably the best help defense of the season and it was nice to see another team uncomfortable with pressure.
The press was a nice wrinkle.   Really like when Ziggy and Burns are in the backcourt applying pressure since you have two guys with long arms and Burns can really move his feet and they're both strong and not to mention you have Dynes as the last line of defense.

I want to say it was a great defense yesterday but GB went 6 of 22 from three and a lot of those were open looks.  If GB was hot it might of been a different game.

I think YSU is more effective in up-tempo than a set offense.  Love when Burns gets it and goes fast as long as they're not throwing low bounce passes to the bigs.

Rush was key to the win but I'm wondering if he shoud move in and take the two sometimes instead of the foot and a half behind the three point line.  To use a baseball anaolgy get a single and stay on base instead of gambling for 2nd and getting thrown out.   Maybe his shooting percentage will go up and it might help the team better although I get the thrill of banging in a three.

I see no way that Detroit goes into Oakland and wins and irregardless they beat us twice so they have a lock on the #1 seed even though it would be nice to have another championship banner.

Coach C is really spoiling us.   Last season a championship and this year on a cusp with a completely new team.

Gabe Dynes = Milwaukee Kryptonite.   I'm guessing that was his first double double to go along with protecting and altering in the post.

DJ with another expected and consistent double double.  John Lovelace was great late in the game and OT with some phenominal put back slams.   Nice homecoming.

Thompson had a bad night shooting but he still played his rear off and I'm sure he'll play better at Green bay.  Three point shooting has been horrific.   Need to even out the percentages going forward from three.

First time in D1 winning 20 games back to back ?

As we go into ot the only word I can use is UGLY.   Btw how many time outs does Milwaukee get.  It seems like they used 4 in the last 5 minutes.
