YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Early info on Valpo Football
« on: September 04, 2011, 09:40:07 PM »
Some more early thoughts from Valpo message board:

I watched the entire game on the BTN, and Youngstown wasn't out of that game until the 4th quarter. Youngstown even had opportunities to make it a closer game. A blocked extra point and a missed field goal cost them 4 points. Sparty also missed a field goal, so that sort of cancels itself.

Point of all this...YSU wasn't outmatched physically against MSU, I fear the same can't be said when Valpo plays Youngstown. I am truly concerned for the safety of the players.

I understand the concern and it isn't without merit based on what I also saw last night.  However, Valpo isn't without size and probably not just short fat kids.  The weight lifting program has no doubt impacted the muscle on our guys.  For example, on the offensive line we have Nate Blair, a 6'5" 305 lb. senior and on defensive we have Nico
Carson at 6'3" 275 lbs, also a senior.  At wide receiver we have guys like senior Sean McCarty at 6'5" 210 lbs and even the starting quarterback, Eric Hoffman is 6'3" 200 lbs.

My point is that they are more athletic and faster but not necessarily bigger.  With our new conditioning effort I would be surprised to see a bunch of injuries.  I played in a bunch of lopsided losses and injuries weren't necessarily part of the process.  Let's hope I'm right.

The thing that I hope for is the effort.  Are the players prepared to go for four quarters regardless of outcome?  This team can score and has enough talent to stay on the field.  We used to play Indiana State and Ball State as conference games when I first came to Valpo.  Great mismatches with talent even back then but with our mental and physical effort we let them know they were in a game.  I guess Lou Holtz says it best - "When you're wrestling with a gorilla you don't stop when you get tired but only when the gorilla gets tired!"  Injuries shouldn't be a concern as long as clean play is promoted and monitored by coaches and referees.  Size doesn't always win but quickness and speed kills.  I hope we can match the quickness and speed portion or Katy bar the door.  Go VU!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Early info on Valpo Football
« on: September 04, 2011, 09:01:27 PM »
From the Valpo Football page:

Valpo has lost 22 games in a row. Franklin, a 24th ranked Division III team,
defeated them last Saturday 49-35.

Game Notes: Franklin leads the all-time series 12-3 and has now won five
straight meetings … the 35 points scored by the Crusaders were the most
Valpo has tallied since at 47-14 victory at Campbell on Nov. 15, 2008 … Porter’s
interception was the first of his career and his first touchdown … Bryce LaMore
(Manteno, Ill./Bishop McNamara H.S.) also recorded his first collegiate pick … Valpo
was 2-for-2 on fourth down conversions and 3-of-3 scoring in the red zone

Valpo had a 14 point lead early but could not hold the lead.
Returning 6 starters on offense and 6 on defense.  A very young
team that appears to be able to score.  That being said, I don't see
why we should not hold them to a shutout.

The Crusaders totaled 463 yards of offense, including 394 through the air off
of the arm of redshirt freshman Eric Hoffman (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln H.S.),
who completed 27-of-42 passes including a touchdown in his collegiate debut.

Wick250, Akron & Penn State are huge money games for us (I am not at liberty at this moment to tell you the amount).  We can not and should not turn down any money game offered, that we can certainly transport ourselves to.

No seating is to be placed above the office areas.  Portable seating will be stored in the equipment annex and brought in as  needed and placed on the football field or in the corners.

Opps, sorry Italian Penguin but the trip was a last minute decision made at about 1500 hours.  A surprise to me as well.

This rumors is just sad to read.  Please remove this item from the board.  I don't believe that a "booster" would come out and say these things with out some proof (name names).  Let's see, maybe I can start one myself by saying the Pete the Penguin and Penny are now separated and seeking a divorce. A "booster" told me this while fishing at Lake Glacier.

We took the opportunity to ride down and catch the action.  We were impressed with the quality of play and with how our YSU basketball players performed.DuShawn Brooks and Blake Allen put on a show with the team "SPK Law".  They won easily and the team is in the semi-finals.  Both players were hitting shots, Brooks driving into the basket and Allen hitting outside 3 pointers. Nate Perry ran the team  "UPMC" from point and his distribution was good.  When left alone he hit his points.  Josh Chojnacki saw limited action but did hit some long shots.  He has excellent range.

Playing for team "Lair" were Ashen Ward, Cale Zuiler, and Fletcher Larson. Ashen was his usual steady playing self. He was able to get numerous rebounds and played very good defense.  Larson looked very confident on the court and he was banging hard on the boards and taking no prisoners. First year player Zuiler was taller than we expected and he maybe just what our team needs.  I hope he can play more than expected as a freshman.

This was the first year some of our YSU team was invited to play in this Pro-Am event.  I hope we are invited back as the talent included players form Robert Morris, Pitt, Akron, Davidson, Nebraska, Eastern Kentucky, Duquesne, Utah, Assumption, Cornell,Edinboro, Gannon, West Virginia, Mt. Union and Marshall.

Tuesday evening the semi-rinals will be played at 7 and 8 PM.  On these 2 semi-final teams we have Sean Amiker playing for team "PGT Trucking". For team "PBC" Damien Eargle and Kendrick Perry play.  A lot of buzz about our players especially Kendrick since this team has only lost once and are favored to reach the finals.

I am an optimist and think we may have a better basketball team than expected.

For those of you so interested.  Work is being performed to complete all of the center's interior office area. This work includes drywall, tile, electrical, plumbing, doors, windows, painting, ac & heating duct work, etc.  Exterior work includes the extension of the west outside retaining street wall since the roadway was found to be in need of shoring up so that flood and road erosion will not cause a later problem.  This erosion was a new development because of the rains we had during the spring. Finally the addition of the maintenance/equipment storage addition has just been framed in on the east side of the building.  This addition, compliments of the Penguin club, will greatly increase team equipment access to the center as well as keep all the needed equipment safe when not needed.  This area will be similar to the equipment entrances at the Covelli Center.  Our state of the art building will be ready soon.  Patience my fine feathered friends.

IP and the rest of the Penguin Nation, it should be noted that Pete Mollica was inducted into the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame in the 2010 class.  Pete was a class act as they say and we are glad that he was more than able to receive that award.  Well deserved for all his years dedicated to sports in the valley.

Wick 250, there is certainly room on top of the offices for seating.  However, I don't recall any plan for that.  I does appear that for track meets that the corners have a lot of space for bleachers and like Kent State portable bleachers were set up on the inside football field, especially around the finish line and the awards podium.  I expect the same.  Sorry oleYSUfan, we did not notice any stone work on the outside because we were so focused on the inside of Watts.

South Beach and I were inspecting the work in progress at the Watts Center today.  Our comments when we entered the building was a HOLY COW and a WOW! It is Spectacular!  Reminded us of the University of Kentucky's "Blue Barn". The Watts is huge. What an asset it will be for us. We were dwarfed by the size and space. All of the netting is no hung and I believe paid for by a special contributor. The weather has improved to the point that the asphalt is being laid down and the steamrollers were hard at work paving.  It reminded me of the work you see on the resurfacing of a highway. The actual field space has been grated and a layer or two of fine granulated mix has  been raked in and also paved, and all is in place for the foundation of the artificial turf.  A lot of hustle and bustle was going on especially with electricians and other specialists at work.  Let's hope that the weather will continue to cooperate and the completion will remain on schedule.
