YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Friday's Game vs UWM
« on: January 22, 2012, 12:53:07 AM »
A little noise from the Panther message board:
From Black PantherU

Here's the deal. If Youngstown State wins its final 10 and goes 15-3 in conference, wins the HL Tournament and goes to the NCAAs, I'm still in favor of removing them from the conference.

It's not that YSU can't win. They should have won at least 6 games last year in conference when they won 2. But the university, fundamentally, is a bad fit for the Horizon League.

It is, primarily, a football school. As well they should be. The other two schools, Butler and Valpo, are primarily basketball schools who only have D-I football because the NCAA would no longer let them play D-III. YSU is all about football, which is the way they should be because football is the king of sports.

However, the Horizon League is a conference that is first and foremost about men's basketball. Having one team in the conference with different priorities throws things off whack. This is why YSU is worst or near the bottom in numbers that people don't glean from the box score but make a big difference in an athletic department - attendance, budget, recruiting budget, coaching salaries.

Basically, Slocum has finally found a nucleus that can win together, and kept them together. For the last decade, so many kids have left YSU's program because they hate it there. They lost kids this past year too (among them Devonte Maymon, surprise), but they were "addition by subtraction" as Slocum himself has said.

More tidbits from BBFran from the Panther message board.

The result didn't surprise me. We won by the skin of our teeth there last year. YSU has a good squad.

That said, I was still impressed that we never flinched in the game. Our team has mental toughness, and that will stand us in good stead throughout the remainder of the season.

Now let's see if we can steal one from CSU.

P.S. It's no palace, but it's still frustrating to see that YSU, a football school as Jimmy noted, has a facility like the Beeghly when we have nothing. Especially when there's nobody there to watch a game.

Sorry 1-AA only young woman swimming today.  YSU very spirited and enthusiastic during the meet.  If you or anyone gets an opportunity to watch a meet come on out and cheer the Penguins on.  Future home meet with UIC is on the horizon.

We were rocked tonight.  Did you see the size and athleticism of the Valpo inside players.  Holy cow we are no match for this team.  Also, note that even with the size they had, they ran with us.  We also had no answer for their zone defense when they used it.  Out-stratagized and out-played.

A todos los fanaticos do los Penquinis, Feliz Navidad.

You are correct South beach. I say, most coaches can do the x and o's and the better ones are able to adjust the x and o's during a game or especially at the end of the game.   "If " - and I mean if  there is a problem with not winning?  Then what/where is the problem?  Are the players we have not basketball ready with a reasonable basketball IQ?  What else could it be?  Is it recruiting?

The name of the game must be "can you recruit" and can you not find the player with the athletic ability (basketball IQ) in junior college or high school to play under your system.

Recruiting strategy should be to identify, solicit, stay with it the effort till  that that player turns you down.  Then if you don't succeed then go get the next one on your wish list.

Success in coaching is based on success in recruiting.  That being said, if there is no budget or worse yet, no desire to complete (recruit) on the level of my/our expectations (division one)  then GET OUT OF IT.  Don't raise expectations of masquerading YSU as a division one program worthy of the HORIZON LEAGUE.

As coach Slocum has said many times unfortunately  "It is what it is"!

Troubled by the loss to a team that possessed the will to win more than we did.  I don't want to watch a team (YSU) with the same set play over and over again.  I don't want to watch a team (YSU) pass the ball around the perimeter with the guards playing catch over and over until the shot clock is at 8 seconds or less. I don't want to watch the player left with the last pass at that point takes the shot.  Is this what our 2010/2011 strategy will be?

Turnovers were down except for the costly one at the end of the game with 8 seconds to go. My question would be to ask if this was the play diagrammed from the time out called with 15 seconds to go?

Wow did we get our rebounded.  May I ask where is the rebounding help for Ergel coming from?  Who is to crash the boards? Not from the player expected to help.  That player has vanished from the statistics of assists, scoring, rebounding.

We will not get to the foul line unless we attack the basket. The offensive strategy has to change.

It is time to ask questions and demand answers? How can we avoid another 20 loss season?

On the bright side. I was so happy to see so many young boys and girls at the game.  Those boys and girls are our future penguin fans and losing a game tonight is impressionable to them.  Will their parents ask them to come to another game and will their answer be "no I don't want to watch YSU lose again".

Just returned after watching one of the worst performances of YSU men's bb ever.  Very pathetic, uninspired effort, full of forced and unforced turnovers, non team playing, undisciplined offense, chaotic street ball basket ball playing ever.  To have the Akron coach come on the radio in the post game interview and say - YSU appeared to be saving their starting players (substituting them out of the game) for the Robert Morris game this Thursday. He said we had 3 tough games so far and YSU was pointing toward the Robert Morris "home game".  I hope this is not correct.  It can't be.

Watching Akron play the defense that they did on us was sad.  Akron contested every shot.  Akron doubled every 3 point shooter with effort and ease.  Akron forced turnover. We had no time to rest, react, contend.  Our defense was terrible and for the most part nonexistent. Our bench (not division one at all) is sad.  I am stopping my ranting here as I don't want to say much more because I will say the wrong thing.  I apologize to all of you but it hurts to see the non existent effort that I witnessed tonight.

I hope this is the bottom moment of the season and we can look up and make something out of the rest of the season.  If not, then teams like Robert Morris and the rest of the Horizon League will eat us for lunch.  An attitude change is in order!

As you can tell I am angry and wondering what to do next.  the question is just where does our basketball team belong?  What league?  Are we serious about basketball at YSU?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Why not?

In the mid-major world I am suggesting a challenge between Mid-Major conferences instead of the silly bracket buster game late in the season.  How about a challenge between the Horizon League and the MAC, or the Missouri Valley, or the Atlantic 10 or any other conference.  Could present to the nation some interesting TV match-ups. How about the interest and excitement plus a chance to find out where you stand in the Mid-Major world early.  Might be a money maker and from a rating point of view be very instrumental in getting an at large bid to the dance.

In agreement with you big Red.  The phones are wringing off the hook with coaches and players who are big calling us to play basketball for us.  Ha.

What would you have the athletic department do? Have the WRTA pick up fans?  Daytime fireworks shows?
or I know what you really want - free tickets for everyone?

Maybe just maybe we have to recreate ourselves (if we find money), win 2 to 3 more national championships, build the other side of stadium as we declare ourselves Division 1 independents, or better yet start playing teams we can relate to.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Attendance this year for YSU football?
« on: October 30, 2011, 09:11:37 PM »
Weather mostly kept the crowd down.  Playoff games will get the crowds coming. Fans getting older, cultivating younger fans lacking. Opponents that one does not identify with. Just a few reasons.

132
Every opportunity must be given for women to compete on a division 1 basis.  It is what a University Athletic Department should/must provide.  Those of us who follow the number one sport in the world futbol understand the level of play and strategy that must be mastered to play this sport.

I like the finger pointing.  This is a real world we live in.  We don't need to cuddle these athletes.

We are so proud of his accomplishments especially the Youngstown Flag Football League.  He has been a featured speaker at the Curbstone Coaches and our organization is contributing to his efforts with the children.

Sure can.  Big Ten games and most MAC start at noon or 1 pm.  Most major tv games start at 8PM.
