YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: State of YSU Football
« on: September 19, 2013, 09:28:32 PM »
A number of thoughts ........

1. The MAC ain't happening. Too expensive. Need double the current athletic budget. No way to fund it.

2. Other than maybe beating cellar dwellars like Akron and maybe Kent, to play the MAC would be a butt kicking annually. YSU would not compete well overall.

3. You got a poor AD right now running the ship. I trust none of his decisions on who to hire , who to extend contacts of, keeping people when they should be let go or who to play. I see an athletic   dept in the MAC that would drown all the sports with poor decisions.

4. The overall sports program would also  suffer  competitively in the MAC, not just football.

5. I note that this season ticket  prices went up and can't be justified. People aren't coming because of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, just so you know. Concession prices went up and most have to pay to park. How much more would all these have to go up to help fund an entry in the MAC ?

6.Most students don't come to games now. Why should they pay more for athletic fees to support a move to the MAC ? With $$$$$$$$$ tight in the overall university budget, where does academic $$$$$$$$ come from to aid the MAC move ?

7. What advantage is gained recruiting wise over the MAC overall ?  I see major problems competeing for the same caliber of athlete ( higher than we have now) .

8.We still don't have a campus baseball diamond. Sorry, but a Pro stadium off campus doesn't cut it.

9.  YSU would still be a commuter campus vs  MAC  schools with full time students living on their campuses , enhancing student life.

10. Like  it or not, YSU is still viewed as not as academically acceptable as most of the MAC. That is still a negative view of YSU held by   the Presidents and not one  easily  overcome.

The MAC isn't happening.

This is Youngstown. Its still about $$$$$$$$$$$$$. The athletic dept jacked up prices again this year, concessions went up and lots of free parking was removed off the streets for the new athletic field construction. When you raise prices and don't have a playoff program you are just begging for more seats to remain empty ( and increase the emptiness). I don't expect attendance to improve. I expect it to drop.

Point well taken, Wick. The cupboard is bare now  that Angle left. We have no significant QB here now. Best hope Hess doesn't get hurt this year because it will be all over with. As for the Dukes, it really shouldn't be much of a game . They have a couple of players ( Ohio St. transfer) who should be good, but team-wise, they are a huge step down.

Best not to be looking ahead to the MVFC, which is going to be a bear again.

Doubtful. MAC has tried to get a footprint eastward in major metro areas.  NorthDakota is cow town, small market and  is outside the Midwest to East organization of the league for travel.  NDSU can beat the doormats like Minnesota or UNI beating doormats like Iowa St.  Playing BCS would eat both alive in a 12 game schedule. And be terribly expensive. Don't see them running after that carrot.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: MSU In-Game Thread!
« on: September 15, 2013, 12:11:14 PM »
I've slept on it and thought it over.  It was an embarrassing day. Make no mistake , MSU is not going to be a top half of the Big 10 team. They are lower half. That O of theirs is due to be manhandled. That said, as the MVFC begins to unfold, I suspect the true state of the program is going to be revealed. I think it will be extremely difficult to win in the MVFC and playoffs questionable. When YSU did get a short field , they scored on a  very good MSU D. But YSU was kept in a long field situation most of the day and the kicking game I expected to keep MSU in long field was limited. A muffed kick-off return and two dropped passes and YSU was off to a terrible start. Next week is another weenie game. The real season starts in 2 weeks when we kick off the MVFC portion. Will YSU be ready for NDSU, UNI, SDS, etc ?

I doubt it.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: MSU Game
« on: September 12, 2013, 12:53:43 PM »
Paladin's Pigskin Pick this week is YSU, 24-21. There are 3 reasons why.  #1 is the kick game -- if Liste booms them and keeps MSU's O in a long field, our D should contain much of the nation's WORST Passing   O( by stats) and if he can place short kicks into the corner so they have to go 80-90+yds, YSU 's D has an advantage.  #2 -- YSU's D should handle a poor passing team and stop what is now a one dimensional run game by MSU . Spartans have played two poor teams so far and struggled to beat both. YSU will be the best team they have played so far.  Young MSU QBs will get blitzed and pressured. I look for some turnovers to help the Guins.  #3 -- YSU's O, which hasn't shown many plays in two easy wins so far will be  released with a wealth of running backs, a bevy of talented WRs and a record setting QB. If there is a weak link here, it is in an untested OL who have some players I see as "shakey". So, the view is if YSU can keep MSU's O in a long field situation, their D should hold and maybe force some turn-overs. If MSU is held and turns the ball  over to YSU in short field situations, YSU will score on the Spartans by the run, the pass and kicking. This won't be a domination like Pitt was, but should be a game YSU is in all the way with a shot to win even at the end. If YSU is put in long field situations , they will struggle against a good MSU  D and not  have much chance to win. While the Spartans remain the favorites, if the above scenario takes place, an upset is in the cards.
