Win IUPUI upsetting, if you want to call it that, Oakland, YSU appears to have guaranteed themselves a home game.
Oddly enough IUPUI swept Oakland this year for 2 of their 3 conference wins.  I didn't see that one coming at all tonight with the way Oakland has been playing.

I agree with the above comments.  You know what you're getting with DQ and Naz, but YSU needs more consistent scoring from a couple others.  Akuchie seems to be in a funk lately as his scoring has been going down the last 4 games.  I love Covington on the defensive end, but I was hoping he would have been a little more productive scoring.

In order to get to the next level, they need to be able to win some games on the road.  Only 4 road wins this season and they were against USC Upstate, IUPUI, UIC, and Detroit.  The only decent win is the UIC one and that was at the beginning of conference play and UIC has greatly improved.

So with Detroit being banned from post-season play due to academic reasons from years past, that will give the 3 seed now a first round bye in the Horizon League tournament and move IUPUI up to the 9 seed.  There's 2 games left and a lot can happen.  YSU can be as high as the 3 seed and would get the first round bye and a quarterfinal home game or fall to as far as the 7 seed and have to go the road in the first round.

YSU needs to at least win one on this road trip as that would make them no worse than the 5 seed and I think no worse than the 4 seed if they beat Green Bay, which would give YSU the season sweep.  I think if YSU wins both they need UIC to lose one to get the 3 seed.

The 4 seed wouldn't be bad as that would give them a first round home game against IUPUI- a team YSU seems to always be able to handle.  And if they could beat them would get a quarterfinal home game.  It would be pretty demoralizing if YSU gets swept this weekend and has to go on the road after losing 3 straight.  Just don't want to end the season how last year did losing 4 straight.

Would have been unbelievable to come back & win that came but really the difference in the game was that 8 min drought in the first half.  Most of the first half was pretty evenly played and YSU out-played them in the 2nd half.  I thought too a couple momentum changes was when Simmons missed the layup and then NKU missed that 2nd foul shot and YSU couldn't snag the rebound & they hit a 3.

It just took too long to claw back into it.  YSU just couldn't get it under 6 until right at the very end.  It's too bad to hold a team like NKU to 61 & lose but just missed too many open shots and couldn't get the ball to fall in in the second half with a lot of short range shots.  If you look at the stats, YSU made 4 more 3's, had 4 more points from the FT line, outrebounded them, had more assists & less turnovers.

The only 3 losses at Beeghly now are 2 OT losses and this 2 point loss.

The box score reflected attendance of 2,148.  I watched film from two sources and the crowd looked closer to 3,500.  It sounded like more than that.

Can anyone who attended the game comment?  Was the math fuzzy?

I saw that and thought that number seemed low compared to other attendance figures.  Only 2 other home league games were reported to be lower.

The steady progress of this team is impressive.  MOST positive for me (seriously) is the foul shooting.  The last few years and early this year, we consistently lost games with bad shooting at the line.  Games like this and Cleveland state, we played better than the opponent all night, and CLOSED OUT THE GAME AT THE LINE!!  No muss, no fuss, just step up and knock them down.  Not sure we are "there" yet or not, but we DAMN SURE are headed in the right direction.  Congrats all around, players, coaches, fans, and Coach Calhoun!

I would definitely agree with this.  While there have been some games YSU has shot well from the line, they've been more few and far between than in years past.  I know the Milwaukee game was basically lost by shooting poorly at the line, but as you said we've been able to close a lot of them out by knocking them down.

Like you said, probably not there yet, but one thing this year has proved is that YSU can really play with anyone when they've been locked in.  Haven't been too many games they haven't had a chance.  This team has been excellent at home.  They honestly aren't far off at being undefeated at Beeghly with just the two OT losses.

I've been impressed this year how YSU has bounced back every time after tough losses.  There was a 2-game losing streak in non-conference and the 3-game losing streak during conference play and that's been it.  The 3-game included the road games at NKU & Wright State.

If YSU could win out and NKU loses next week to Wright St, YSU would get the 2 seed at the double bye.  That's a tough task, but it's still in view.  The other impressive thing is they've beating everyone in the league at least once other than NKU & Milwaukee, which they still have any opportunity to beat.  That would be really impressive!

Probably the biggest win since the quarterfinal win against Oakland 3 years ago, and hard to say how long since a convincing win against a team like that.  YSU was locked in from the start.  Felt like they had an opportunity to get up on them early, but missed some good looks and had some bad turnovers.  Those turnovers probably kept YSU from getting up double figures in the first half.

I was concerned when Wright State got it down to 1 in the 2nd half as it seemed like the game had changed.  Wright State was scoring fast and both teams were trading baskets.  It was more Wright State's style of play.  The crowd really got into though as YSU locked down down on defense.  And really the key was just crushing them on the boards and making 16-17 at the FT in the 2nd half including 16 straight!  And the other key was Covington shutting down Gentry.  When he gets hot, he's hard to stop.  Holding him to just 5 points on 1 made 3 and only 2 assists is impressive.

Quisenberry was unbelievable.  He was in a zone as his confidence was through the roof.  I don't think he even scored for more than 10 mins in the 2nd half until knocking down some foul shots.

I think we're now 12-1 when holding teams to 70 points or less and 12-2 now at Beeghly!

I was hoping this was going to be the year we really had an inside presence; Naz was greatly improving, Thomas seemed like he could be a stud & thought for sure Ola would be more improved. In the end, Naz has really stepped up but Ola has regressed & I wonder what his future even holds. Thomas' playing time seems to have dropped as Hamperian has gotten more minutes. Both Thomas & Ola can't stay out of foul trouble when they do play. Thomas always seems to have a stamina issue. Kind of reminds me Tyree Robinson.

I've watched this team all year & I'm still not sure how the rest of the season is going to go. I thought for sure we'd take care of business with IUPUI & CSU which we did and said I hoped we'd could split the 3 remaining series which we've done the first with. Obviously the games with NKU & Wright State are going to be a challenge. I'm not sure how much better we are than Green Bay or Milwaukee and those are going to be difficult on the road. Have a feeling we'll end up 9-9 or 10-8. Think it's going to be a real challenge to win 3 or more.  I'm just not sure if we can win more than 2 straight in the tourney.

went to the foul line only 3 times.   shot 36% from the field.  can't win a game with those stats

Was exactly it.  Started off fast, but went that long stretch of I think 7 minutes without scoring and even longer with only 2 points scored during the first half.  That pretty much set the tone of the game.  Went on about 3 runs after that, but could never get over the hump.  Just missed way too many short range shots that rimmed out and wide open 3's.  At one point was shooting 29%.  Twice Quisenberry stepped out of bounds with wide open looks.  Those were killers I thought.  It took him way too long to get going.  And even the one announcer said he was shooting YSU out of the game in the first half.

Crazy thing is YSU made as many FGs and even one more 3 than Oakland plus took 17 more shots!  YSU outrebounded them and was +10 on the offensive boards...shame they couldn't take better advantage of that.  The difference was the FT shooting as they got there 18 times compared to 3 by YSU.  Crazy thing is they only made 10 of 18 too.

Thought Morgan played well and tried to keep YSU in the game.  You have to wonder what Quisenberry did not to get the start, if he was out late or what.  It obviously wasn't as bad as Covington.

It's just kind of how this year has went.  It would have been a huge win, but YSU just hasn't been able to get to that next level, but yet at the same time have been able to come back and win games when they've had to.  That loss basically took them out of the running of a 2nd seed and the 2 game bye as they're now 3 back with 4 to go.  Now tied for 3rd, but only one game up on 6th and two on 7th.  Really need to be able to split the home games against NKU & Wright State and then GB and Milwaukee games.

It's always nice to win on the road.  My only criticism is that we over passed on a few occasions .   Guys get by their defender and need to shoot the 12 footer instead of the too close pass in traffic.

Like the other posters props to Garrett Covington and Geoff Hamperian.   Love when Garrett's attacking the basket.   DQ didn't have a big scoring game but he had some great assists.

Davis for Detroit was unconscious.  The game would have been a blow out if he would of shot his usual 30 something percent  from the field.

Any thoughts on why Foster and Pedersen are getting 0 time ?

Good things definitely happen when Covington is active and drives.

Foster hasn't played much in league games.  He impressed me at times in non-conference play.  He's only played a total of 20 mins in league games with 12 of that coming in the Northern KY blowout.  He's only scored 2 points with that coming from the foul line.  Strange thing is he scored in 9 of the 10 non-conference games he played in.

Ola is definitely disappointing so I'm not really surprised he hasn't been getting any mins.  He's struggled when he's played and can't stay out of foul trouble.  I was really excited about him at the start of last season then he struggled then broke his hand twice in the summer and I'm sure that was a setback.  Have to wonder if he'll be on the team next year.

Also, I had been wondering about Muhamed Konate.  He got in a few games early in the year then he wasn't dressing for several games then he disappeared.  I noticed he's no longer on the roster.

The UIC and Milwaukee games still sting, but a lot of these other close games YSU has pulled out would have been losses in the past.  There hasn't been too many bad games this year, Coach has had them ready to play and have started fast in most games this year.  The 2nd half has been concerning even back in a lot of those non-conference wins that YSU gave big leads away.  I feel that's been one of the biggest concerns this year is playing with leads.  It's interesting to note YSU is now +60 in the first half but -12 in the 2nd half including OT.  YSU has given up 90 more points in the 2nd half compared to the 1st half.

Wright St. plays UIC and Milwaukee and Green Bay play each other.  If YSU could knock off Oakland Saturday, they could get some separation in the standings from some of the mid-pack teams.

This game kind of reminded me of the first game with Detroit...YSU got up big and controlled the game, but Detroit came back.  I was starting to have flashbacks of the UIC game and blowing that big lead in the final mins.  Davis is just so hard to contain and so dangerous when he gets going.  He single-handedly got them back in the game.

Thought YSU played well offensively and shot the ball well.  It was to give up over 70, get out-rebounded and win.  Thought Covington and Hamperian were tremendous.  Quisenberry closed it out again at the foul line.  2 game changing plays I felt was the missed dunk by Detroit and the move Hamperian made to get out of trouble and convert the old fashioned 3-pt play that was initial called a charge.

Seemed like the officials really let them play...wasn't a lot of whistles but it was called equal on both sides.  In fact, both teams had 12 fouls total.

That number 10 for CSU was the best on-ball defender against DQ I've ever seen.  Without some outside shooting from Simmons this could have been different, but we hit some open 3's and MADE SOME DAMN FOUL SHOTS DOWN THE STRETCH!  That was really good to see.  If we played like the second half against CSU all the tme, we'd be #1 in the Horizon.  Coach C is developing a solid program.  We all want it to come faster, but it IS coming.

It's definitely coming.  Last year they were able to win 4 more games than year one and that 6 game league win streak was great, but they didn't finish the year well.  This year they already had a winning non-conference record, already have 2 more wins than last year with at least 7 to go.  The rest of the year is going to be interesting with 4 road games and 2 home games against the top 2 in the league.  Hopefully YSU can win a few more then see what happens in the tournament.

It was good to finally beat CSU.  I felt in the first half, YSU had good looks but couldn't knock down shots and just way too many bad turnovers.  You could tell from the first of the second half, they came out focused.  They got CSU in foul trouble.  The key was defensive, rebounding, and knocking down foul shots late.  When YSU has done that this year they've been pretty hard to beat.  In fact, when YSU has held teams to 70 points or less they're 11-1!  Just that one loss to Western Michigan by 2 that YSU really should have won.  It's crazy to think if they didn't lose that one and blow the OT losses to Milwaukee and UIC, this team is 17-8 overall and 9-3 in the conference.

It looks like at this point YSU is going to be between the 3 and 7 seed.  Crazy to think they the 3 seed right now, but 1/2-game out of being the 7 seed.  Hopefully can at least split the next 3 weekends.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU BB vs IUPUI
« on: February 02, 2020, 10:16:08 PM »
The game pretty much went like how every game against IUPUI goes.  YSU gets up really big then IUPUI goes on a run and makes it a game and YSU pulls away late mostly in high scoring games.  YSU definitely has IUPUI's number beating them 14 out of 15 tries with their only loss in 2000.

It's hard to take much out of the game other than YSU has bounced back this year after every bad loss.  They swept Oakland & Detroit after losing to Cleveland St., pulled out a big win after blowing one to Milwaukee, and then winning Saturday after really blowing the UIC game.

This is clearly the best team since Kendrick Perry's senior year.  And like ytownchief22 said, this team can play with anyone but can also lose to anyone.   Interesting to note YSU is +55 in the first half, but -23 in the 2nd half including OT.  That really goes back to some of those non-conference games they let some bad teams go on runs late and stay in games.

I still really don't have a feel how the rest of the season is going to play out.  Had they just shot a respectable % from the FT line against Milwaukee and they win that and not blown a 9-point lead in the last few mins to UIC it's an entirely different feel.  They would be 8-3, tied for 2nd & just a game out of first place.  Instead they are in a 3-way tie for 3rd and only 1 game up on 7th place.

They now have a week to prepare for Cleveland St. in a critical game.  CSU has really had YSU's # of late winning 5 straight.  Hopefully we take care of business and get to 7-5 then at least split the remaining weekends of Milwaukee-Green Bay on the road, Detroit-Oakland on the road, and NKU & Wright State at home.       10-8 might be good enough to have the opportunity at 2 tournament home games.
