YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU GB game 1
« on: January 01, 2021, 06:21:21 PM »
YSU wins 84-77.  Much needed win but YSU was a much better team and the game shouldn't have even been close.  Defensive struggles just continue.

Naz was nearly unstoppable putting up 32 points and 12 rebounds, but missed 6 FT.

DQ still doesn't look like himself.  Obviously the ankle was still hindering him.  Just 4-8 from the line.

Akuchie's struggles continues.   He failed to score and has scored just 10 in the last 3 games.

Thought Myles Hunter had a nice game with 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Trailing 40-39 at the half.  YSU has now trailed in 6 of their 8 games at half.

Same old story...no defense.  There's no reason YSU shouldn't be up double figures on this team.

DQ in starting the starting lineup & GB without 2 of their top players.

Horrible start down 16-4 at the first media timeout.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Updates from Coach Calhoun
« on: December 29, 2020, 03:47:21 PM »
In Coach Calhoun's press conference today, he said the status of DQ for this weekend is still up in the air and probably wouldn't be known for the next 48 hours.  He said he played through the ankle injury during the NKU games, which happened about a week before.  I do remember him going down in pain during the WVU Tech game.  Not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Coach said Jamir Thomas had ACL surgery and is done for the year.  That's a tough break losing his presence and toughness inside.

Coach is hopefully to have Greyson Kelley available soon.

No fans still for the games this weekend.  I know originally the Horizon League said no fans for at least the month of December.

You can tell Coach isn't happy about starting with 8 out of 10 on the road.  He brought up the safety of the players with the extra travel.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Game 2 CSU 81 YSU 74
« on: December 27, 2020, 11:36:54 PM »
CSU got too many easy baskets by beating us off the dribble as stated. Our new guys are not up to the defensive skills needed to play man against them.  Maybe zone would have helped, maybe not. Their outside shooting would get us then instead of the layups we gave up. When Mays fouled out we were in big trouble. He is a big part of our offense.  Too bad Jalani is gone, could have helped I think. Last year I would have played him more instead of Devin and he may have stayed.

Agree 100%.

This team can't win giving up 80+ points and certainly can't without DQ.  YSU gave up 100 points in the 2nd half of the last 2 games.  Too many easy baskets for CSU both games, too many turnovers, and didn't shoot good for the line like YSU has been doing.  Thought Akuchie struggled both days.

Would have been nice to get out of there with another split without DQ; now YSU really needs to sweep Green Bay, a team that hasn't won a game this year, to get back to 3-3 with a pair on the road at Wright State looming.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Game two YSU vs NKU on ESPN2
« on: December 20, 2020, 10:39:10 PM »
Big win.  To be able to split NKU and avoid an 0-2 start with 8 of the first 10 on the road is huge.

It's funny, yesterday YSU was down by 3 at the half and 2 today, but felt like NKU was up by more yesterday and I felt better about it today; maybe it was the better defensive effort.  I felt the energy and intensity was so much better today and really it was YSU's first complete game.  That and NKU not killing YSU on the 3's was the difference.  Yesterday NKU was +24 from 3, today YSU was +3.

I thought Naz and Akuchie were both tremendous, and Mayes continues to impress.  And for the 2nd straight game YSU has done excellent not only getting to the FT line but knocking them down.  I hope that's a trend.

I had a feeling we'd see the starting 5 getting the majority of the minutes after yesterday.  Vargo was impressive.  Going to need more of that going forward.

Still hard for me to believe Bentley isn't getting any minutes.

It is discouraging NKU freshmen and a JUCO outplayed YSU seniors (two of which were recognized for achievement in 2019 - 2020 by the Horizon League) and an NBA wanna be.  That should not happen.  It appeared from afar NKU put their head down and expended significant effort to prove they were the better team.  YSU may have read a few too many press clippings, showed up with an illusion they were a championship contender, and did not marshal the effort to make it so.  That is a coaching failure.

We will see if it gets corrected on Sunday.

Thought it was interesting too the one commentator brought up that he didn't think YSU looked like they had much intensity in pre-game warmups & early in the game

Inside presence not good.
3pt shooting not good.
china plaque effect not good.

Yes that pretty much sums it up.

I thought early on when YSU built the lead to 7, they really had the opportunity to be up double that but couldn't knock down a lot of good looks that they had.  The D for most of the first half was good; I thought the zone and full court press was working until NKU started to knock down shots that pushed them up at half.  It had that feeling though at half that if YSU couldn't make shots they were going to be in trouble, and NKU just shot lights out the 2nd half.  Once NKU got up 7 it felt like double that and once the lead hit 15 it was over.

YSU wasn't the best shooting team last year, but seemed to out-hustle, out-rebound and brought the intensity that could overcome it.  I know we're only 4 games in and the virus has everything screwed up, but outside of that 2nd half of the Binghamton game I just haven't seen that yet even against the NAIA teams.

I brought up after the last game losing athletes like Simmons and Cathcart along with Morgan, who could come off the bench and provide a spark, really seems to be missing with this team.

In this game it just seemed like every loose ball was bouncing NKU's way compounded by them making shots and YSU not making shots.  You can't shoot 35% and go 3-18 from 3 & expect to win.  NKU was +24 points from 3's.  If nothing else YSU did a good job getting the line and knocking down foul shots.  I thought Akuchie had a lot of opportunities inside for and 1's, but just couldn't get the ball to go through the hoop.

Thought Hamperian was excellent off the bench.  He was one of the brights spots along with the FT shooting.  But outside of him, I just really see YSU's bench play continuing to struggle.  How does Bentley not get any PT?  Thought that seemed odd and the fact he's only taken 2 shots all year.

The scheduling didn't do YSU any favors either to open up with 8 of the first 10 on the road especially having to go to NKU, Wright St & Oakland.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: WVU Tech at Beeghly
« on: December 14, 2020, 09:18:13 PM »
I went to the 2 home games and watched the Binghamton game on ESPN3, and I'm not sure what to make of them other than getting back into playing basketball and chalking up 3 wins.

The Point Park game was more like scrimmage beings one didn't happen this year, little practice and without DQ or Naz.  The 2nd half of the Binghamton game was more like how YSU should be playing and reminded me of last year.  You have to give Point Park and WVU Tech a lot of credit.  Both those schools came to play and brought a lot of intensity- they were up to the challenge.  Both just seemed to wear out and lacked the talent to play for 40 minutes.

I think Coach Calhoun was trying some different lineups in the WVU Tech game, but some of them just struggled to find someone to score.  The first half of the first 3 games is concerning; YSU is -12 but +60 in the 2nd half.

Last year YSU didn't shoot the ball well in 3's and I feel like that trend is continuing. Only shooting 28% after 3 games and even DQ is only 3-16.

DQ is DQ.  He's also really improved his FT shooting since about mid-season last year.

Naz improves & gets stronger every year.  He really has the ability to take over a game.  He's finally converting much more frequently inside.   Still needs to improve his FT shooting; he's only 6-15.

I cannot believe Shemar Rathan-Mayers is freshman.  He really seems like he can be something special.

I love Covington's defensive presence, but I was disappointed at times last year with him thinking we'd getting more productivity out of him especially after his first 2 seasons.  There's some games where it just seems like he's out of it; today was one them.

Akuchie has improved every year; today wasn't his best day, but when he play wells it seems like it translates into YSU playing very well.  I feel like both him and Covington really get down on themselves when things don't go well and take themselves out of it mentally.

It makes me nervous without guys like Cathcart, Simmons, and Morgan.  Feel like YSU lost a lot of athleticism without Cathcart and Simmons and I just don't see that yet with the others.  Morgan could come off the bench and give them that spark.

I was hoping Bentley would step up this year, but he really hasn't gotten a lot of playing time and has only taken 2 shots.  Really surprised by that.  I thought he was hesitant a lot last year.

Hamperian was impressive at times last year.  I'm hoping he can pick up his game.  He didn't get hardly any PT today.

Would certainly be nice to get Jamir Thomas back.  Going to need that size in league play.

The freshman guys of Ganley, Vargo, Dunn, Ogoro, and Traore may have potential down the road, but I'm not sure if they are ready for D1 basketball yet.  And I'm afraid only getting 3 non-conference games could hurt going into league play.

I would imagine that will be it for non-conference games before this weekend at NKU.   Not sure if I'd rather see them sneak another game in mid-week or just focus all week on NKU.

It's hard to take much out of this game other than the guys just knocking the rust off, getting their legs under them, and playing with different people.  Thought the defensive effort was very good.  If it wasn't for a couple weird bounces and a luck long 3 pointer YSU probably would have held them to around 45.  Thought YSU came out in the 2nd half with a lot more intensity, got more comfortable, and made shots.

Shemar Rathan-Mayes really impressed me; he certainly doesn't look like a freshman.  Kinda reminded me of a smaller DQ.  Alex Vargo looked good.

It was definitely a strange environment, but it was good to be back at a game

Tyler Foster has entered the portal on the men's side.

I thought Foster had some potential in non-conference games, but really wasn't used during Horizon League.  Played a total of 20 minutes in league games with 12 of those coming in the blowout loss to NKU.  Didn't even play in the last 12 games.

The Univ Of Washington projection is if the entire nation practices social distancing through at least May.  if it were not for social distancing that figure would be at least 10 times higher than the 60,000.

So if the country were to return to normal, at minimum, and this is a low projection, there would be 600,000 deaths from this virus.   That is more than a common cold.  Yet some think we should fill up Ohio Stadium in September with 100,000 fans.

It was 100,000-240,000 with the mitigation efforts then dropped to 80 some thousand  & now it's down to 60,000.

DeWine said last month 100,000 people had it in Ohio.  Nearly a month later it just went over 5,000. He said during the peak would be 10,000 new cases per day now the prediction is down to 1,600. Keep in mind the other numbers were with mitigation  and social distancing not without.
