YSU Penguin Athletics / Agoro, Vargo & Kelley?
« on: November 18, 2021, 10:57:40 PM »
Coach Calhoun said in his presser they will have Daniel Ogoro back this weekend.  I had wondered what happened to him as he was MIA in the first 2 games.  Anyone know if it was an injury or COVID?  Looking forward to his improvement as he was in impressive last year at times.

Is Greyson Kelley & Alex Vargo still on the team? Noticed in the media guide posted for this weekend Kelley isn't on the roster or photo page; he is still shown on the website.  He was a senior transfer last year that was supposed to be a great shooter.  He was injured for most of the year.  Did give a spark that one game then played very little.  Was able to come back this year due to seniors getting an extra year, but wondered his status now.

Vargo isn't on the photo page but is listed on the roster on the media guy.  I thought last year several of the freshman including Vargo and Dunn had a ways to go.  You have to wonder now.  Dunn hasn't played yet either.  Coach did make a comment after the PSU game and said if Jamir Thomas didn't get ready to play better they'd have to get Dunn ready.

YSU Penguin Athletics / DQ & Naz's debuts
« on: November 10, 2021, 09:23:28 AM »
Darius Quisenberry (Fordham) and Naz Bohannon (Clemson) made their debuts for their new schools.  DQ played 37 mins and scored 25 points thanks to making 6 3's in 12 attempts.  Was only 3-6 from the line.  His 3-PT % was certainly something he struggled with. Naz played over 20 mins and didn't score; had 3 rebounds.  Both schools won.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU Oakland MBB Horizon Tourney
« on: March 02, 2021, 04:56:13 PM »
7:30 PM tip on ESPN +.  Line opened as Oakland a 4 point favorite, dropped to 3.5 yesterday and is now at 3.  Oakland swept YSU winning 82-65 and 81-74 in Oakland without DQ.  That was during YSU's worst stretch of the season when they lost 6 of 7 before getting DQ back.

The YSU-Oakland games are typically entertaining and come down to the end & I expect this one will be like that unlike the first two games.  In Oakland's 10 wins, their lowest total was 77.  They are averaging 78.5 in Horizon League games.  YSU has to keep it from getting into a shootout and keep them in the mid 70s or less unlike the first 2 games.  A shootout doesn't bode well for YSU.  If it gets into that, DQ is going to have to knock down shots from outside, and the rest of the team for that matter.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU UIC MBB

Up 35-25 at the half.  Excellent defense, that's how YSU wins games.  Was a very fast moving first half.  Officials really let the teams play.  7 total fouls.  YSU had some opportunities to expand the lead, but missed a lot of good looks.  Closed out the half strong with 2 late buckets by DQ to push the lead to 10.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Detroit YSU MBB
« on: January 30, 2021, 11:02:55 AM »
Another tough loss.  YSU isn't finding ways to win these close games like last year.  That's 2 of the last 3 games at home that would have felt a lot different if YSU could have pulled them out but instead they are buried now in next to last in the standings.

YSU finally shot the ball well, but was sloppy with the ball in the first half that gave Detroit too many points off turnovers.  YSU just continues to struggle with the zone and couldn't get Naz into the game.  Covington was tremendous & so was Akuchie.

Unless DQ comes back and is effective, this team just isn't consistent enough to be able to string wins together & make any kind of run in the tournament.  The biggest thing missing from last year is defense; and the intensity and energy just isn't there.  You just knew early on in the Detroit game YSU was going to have to make a lot of shots and they did, but not enough to overcome the defensive intensity that's lacking.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU Oakland MBB game 1
« on: January 15, 2021, 11:37:31 PM »
Another disappointing loss.  I really liked how the game was going in the first half.  YSU was playing very good defensive and was making shots...felt like a recipe for a win as it was much like the gritty wins from last year.

YSU was leading 34-26 was under 3 to go then all hell broke loose.  Oakland closes the half on a 12-2 run and that coupled with a 15-0 run in the 2nd half was all she wrote.  It really was inexplicable that YSU was trailing at the half even as bad as they played in the closing mins.  YSU was still up 6 with 40 some seconds to go, and then was up 2 with the ball and the shot clock turned off; they took a quick 3 followed up by a turnover and they are trailing by 2 at the half.  That ending seemed to suck the life out of YSU.

Oakland out-hustled YSU, got the loose balls, made shots, and looked way more athletic in the 2nd half.  Too many 3's by YSU and then played frustrated and not good defense.  The Oakland-YSU games always come down to the wire and never turned into what happened tonight even back to the end of the Slocum era.

Myles Hunter made the most of his start as he was tremendous in the first half and I think all of his 18 came in the first half.  I really like this kid.  He definitely needs to start.  Akuchie was out of sync and as usual when he doesn't get to double figures YSU usually loses.

YSU is really missing that spark DQ gave them last year.  Even without DQ, I thought this team would improve as the games went on, but there's just no consistency.  I feel like Saturday is pretty much a must win now or 3-7 is going to be very difficult to dig out of even with an easier 2nd half schedule.

I'm shocked CSU is now 9-0 after beating Wright St., who has dropped 3 of their last 4.   Those are clearly the best 2 teams in the league.  It's hard to get a good read on a lot of the teams as they've played 3-5 less games other than Oakland and Fort Wayne, who are both 1 up on YSU at 4-5.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU adds a game with Carlow tonight
« on: January 04, 2021, 12:38:18 PM »
6 PM tonight at Beeghly.  Tickets are available but not at the door.  Looks like this will be Carlow's first game of the year.  They are another NAIA school and play Point Park and WVU Tech, the two NAIA schools YSU has beat this year.

Coach Calhoun had mentioned before he'd like to possible add a couple games in between league play.  I was wondering if he'd try to do one this week especially with how the team is playing.  I think it's important to regain some confidence heading into Wright State this weekend.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Updates from Coach Calhoun
« on: December 29, 2020, 03:47:21 PM »
In Coach Calhoun's press conference today, he said the status of DQ for this weekend is still up in the air and probably wouldn't be known for the next 48 hours.  He said he played through the ankle injury during the NKU games, which happened about a week before.  I do remember him going down in pain during the WVU Tech game.  Not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Coach said Jamir Thomas had ACL surgery and is done for the year.  That's a tough break losing his presence and toughness inside.

Coach is hopefully to have Greyson Kelley available soon.

No fans still for the games this weekend.  I know originally the Horizon League said no fans for at least the month of December.

You can tell Coach isn't happy about starting with 8 out of 10 on the road.  He brought up the safety of the players with the extra travel.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Horizon League Basketball Tourney
« on: February 27, 2020, 08:51:34 AM »
So with Detroit being banned from post-season play due to academic reasons from years past, that will give the 3 seed now a first round bye in the Horizon League tournament and move IUPUI up to the 9 seed.  There's 2 games left and a lot can happen.  YSU can be as high as the 3 seed and would get the first round bye and a quarterfinal home game or fall to as far as the 7 seed and have to go the road in the first round.

YSU needs to at least win one on this road trip as that would make them no worse than the 5 seed and I think no worse than the 4 seed if they beat Green Bay, which would give YSU the season sweep.  I think if YSU wins both they need UIC to lose one to get the 3 seed.

The 4 seed wouldn't be bad as that would give them a first round home game against IUPUI- a team YSU seems to always be able to handle.  And if they could beat them would get a quarterfinal home game.  It would be pretty demoralizing if YSU gets swept this weekend and has to go on the road after losing 3 straight.  Just don't want to end the season how last year did losing 4 straight.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Wright St MBB game
« on: January 19, 2020, 01:19:18 AM »
Played much better after Thursday's NKU game.  Could almost say they played well enough to win...really had a lot of opportunities but Wright St made some big blocks that looked like easy buckets down the stretch that really stopped YSU momentum.  It's a shame YSU couldn't knock down some of those 3's...just 4 of 21.  Akuchie had a great look late & missed it...that one really stood out along with those blocks and Quisenberry couldn't get that one layup to fall when he got fouled.  Give YSU credit for hanging tough, every time it looked like Wright St. was about to pull away, YSU went on a mini run...just could never get over the hump.

16-18 at the FT line is very impressive, but unfortunately Wright St got to the line 30 times.

Was good to see Jamir back in there.  Had 12 rebounds and played well I thought.  I just wonder why he didn't play Thursday.

That's 6 straight losses to Wright St.  In 8 of YSU's 9 losses, they've given up 73 or more.  And on the other hand, YSU has only won 1 game this year when the opponent has scored 73 or more.

NKU hammered CSU by 25.  There's no doubt Wright St & NKU are the 2 best teams again.  I was really hoping YSU could get a split, but is now in a 3-way tie for 3rd.  Good thing is now 5 straight at home and none of them are against NKU or Wright State.  We'll see after this stretch where we stand with the second tier teams.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Detroit MBB game
« on: January 11, 2020, 10:25:06 AM »
This is the type of game YSU needs to win if it's going to to take a step to the next level and try to compete for a championship.  It's especially important with road games against N. Kentucky and Wright State next week.

Detroit has always been a team YSU has struggled with whether they've been good or bad and this may be one of the worst teams they've had in awhile.  They've won 12 of the last 13 against YSU with the only win being last year at Detroit. It's mind blowing that's it's been 6 years since YSU beat them at home.  In the past, these games have usually always been high scoring and YSU has generally never been as athletic and as physical as them.    YSU is a 6.5 point favorite.

YSU can't let Davis go off like he did last year at home.  He has the ability to light anyone up if he gets hot.  He's averaging over 24 a game, but surprisingly his 3-PT % is just 31%.  He's shooting 92% at the line at has got there 97 times.

They are 3-14 and haven't won a true away game this year.  They beat UC-Irvine on a neutral site and beat So. IL Edwardsville & N. KY at home.  They have played a lot of good teams...Gonzaga, Clemson, NC State, Notre Dame, and Kent St.  They also played competitive games against MAC schools of Toledo & Ohio.
