YSU Penguin Athletics / Horizon League Coaches/Portal
« on: March 11, 2024, 11:24:49 AM »
As expected, both Matt Crenshaw from IUPUI and Mike Davis from Detroit were let go over the weekend.

Several players from both schools have entered the portal including Detroit's leading scorer Marcus Tankersley, who avg 16.6 a game.  I don't know if that's someone YSU would look at or not. They are obviously in need of some guards.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Horizon League Tourney Seeding
« on: February 29, 2024, 09:09:57 AM »
YSU is going to be a 2 or 3 seed with a first round bye and a home game.  YSU could end up in a 3-way or 2-way tie for the regular season title if Oakland would lose to Detroit, but still can only be a 2 or 3 seed.  We need Milwaukee to beat GB at home on Saturday to get the 2 seed. Milwaukee can't improve their seeding, but you hope will want to beat their rival and guarantee themselves of a winning record.

So barring some crazy upsets, it would appear YSU will play Milwaukee, PFW or CSU.  I'm not sure who I'd rather see us play.  It took OT to beat Milwaukee twice and I feel they are the most dangerous team that won't get the first round bye.  We've struggled with PFW in recent years.  CSU has talent, but plays pretty inconsistent basketball.

One advantage you hope YSU has is they are the only team that doesn't play Saturday so in a way they almost get a double bye when it comes to rest.  Milwaukee, PFW & CSU are all at home though on Saturday and of course on Tuesday

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU @ Wright St MBB

Big game tonight on ESPNU.

Wright St is a 2.5-3.5 point favorite.  Over/under is 164.5

Wright State is 12-10, 7-4 in the league.  They've won 3 in a row since losses to YSU and Green Bay, and prior to that had won 3 in a row.

If YSU could win tonight, they could get some separation from 4th on back.

Hopefully YSU can continue it's defensive effort.  Really going to need it against Wright St & PFW.  YSU held WS to 71 at home, which was their lowest point total of the year.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU at IUPUI MBB
« on: January 25, 2024, 12:31:02 PM »
YSU is a 13.5-14.5 point favorite.  YSU is 125 in the net rankings, IUPUI is 359 out of 362.

In the last game at home, YSU trailed by 1 at halftime and came back to win 75-65 thanks to Brett Thompson going off for 20 2nd half points.  That was after 2 straight losses.  That 2nd half kick started YSU to 3 straight home wins and 4 victories in the last 5 to get back in the race for the title.

YSU is currently tied for 3rd in the league with NKU.  They are 1 back of Oakland, who they lose the tiebreaker to, and are a half-game behind Green Bay.  Oakland plays at Green Bay tonight so a win by YSU would put YSU in a tie for 2nd worst case.

IUPUI is 6-15 and 2-8 in the league.  They only have 3 DI victories; Valpo, Detroit & PFW.   The PFW victory was shocking as they scored 85 points to beat them by 6 on the road.  IUPUI has only scored more than 67 points 3 times in their 10 league games with 2 of them losses.  They are only averaging 65.8 ppg in league play.

YSU leads the all-time series 20-2 and have won the last 6 and since joining the league YSU is 12-1 against them.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU - Navy MBB

YSU is a 9.5-10 point favorite, was 10.5 last night.

Navy is 3-6.  They beat Coppin State by 23, but they are just 1-12.  They beat VMI by 20, but they are just 2-10.  They beat D3 Washington MD by 58.

In their 2 most recent D1 games they only lost to 9-2 George Washington by 2 in OT and 8-3 Quinnipiac by 3.  They also only lost to Temple by 7 and San Diego by 8.

Navy only averages a bit over 67 a game and gives up under 62 a game.

In 5 of their 6 losses, they've failed to score 70 points.  The only game they did was the George Washington OT game so you have to feel like if YSU can get into the 70s they have a good shot.

YSU is up to 102 in the net rankings and Navy sits at 274.

Would sure be nice enter the holidays and get back into conference play at 10-3 and 2-0

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU - Westminster MBB
« on: December 18, 2023, 12:39:04 PM »
Thankfully it's the last of the 4 games against non D1's; however, this is one I do think is good to play annually.  Westminster is close and generally brings people, and much of their roster is always local kids.  Looking at their roster this year, the furthest away is one from Columbus, one from Pittsburgh, one from Akron, and one from Strongsville, while the other 13 are all from Youngstown area.  Plus generally they have a pretty good basketball team.

Westminster is 6-5, but have won 4 of the last 5.

YSU hasn't played very good against any of the 3 non D1's thus far.  They only beat NAIA Ohio Christian by 28 giving up 71.  The Lake Erie game was tied at halftime.  They were only up 15 on Bethany at halftime until playing a little better in the 2nd half, but still gave up 70.

What an absolute lackluster effort in the first half. YSU built a 13-point lead in the first half and then looked disinterested in playing. The only one that came to play with John Lovelace. Tied at 32

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU - Utah Tech MBB

Decent win, but it shouldn't have been as close as it was.

YSU missed a lot of open looks in the first half and settled for too many 3's and really should have had big lead early on.  They let Utah Tech hang around.  YSU had an opportunity to stretch out the lead up 10 and the ball in the 2nd half, but let UT go on a run.  UT got it down to 1 and had the ball until YSU's run pretty much kept it between 5-8 points late in the game.

DJ Burns was impressive with his 3rd double-double in 4 games.  Was good to see Jaylen Bates have a really good game off the bench.  Those 2 were the difference in the game.  Both hit some clutch 3's and FT.

Overall still need to shoot the ball better. Rush just 1-7 from 3.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Transfer Portal
« on: March 20, 2023, 09:16:23 AM »
Will Dunn is the first YSU player to entered the transfer portal.  Not really surprised by this.  He was one I could see dropping down to D2 or D3.

His PT disappeared after the Detroit home game at the end of January, and I'm pretty sure that was the game Cohill yelled at him after a turnover.  He also played the most mins in that game at 19 than he did all season.  After that he only played in 6 of the final 11 games for a total of 13 mins and did not score.

He really improved from his freshman year to his sophomore year and even started 13 games last year.  I was hoping for more improvement this year.  He did hit 6 of his 13 3-point attempts this year.  He seemed to struggle on the defensive side this year and turned the ball over too much.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU - Detroit MBB

YSU was a 1.5-point favorite at Detroit.

After a slow start and getting down 7, YSU going going later in the 2nd half and leads 40-30.  YSU had some good looks early from inside and 3's and couldn't hit.  Brandon Rush hit 2 big 3's in the last couple possessions to push that lead out.  Cohill doesn't look himself and hasn't scored.    They held Antoine Davis to 10 with 4 of them coming from the FT line.  He's 0-4 from 3 and they are just 2-13 as a team.

Think they said Detroit is 1-7 or 1-8 when trailing at the half.  YSU has been a much better 2nd half team so looks hope that trend continues.

Wow YSU is a 22.5-23.5 favorite. Guessing that's based on IUPUI only averaging around 60 a game & YSU around 84. Still seems really high. YSU has won 17 of 19 against them but the last 4 games has been within 7 points including a loss. IUPUI is 3-12 & 0-4 in the league & I think only has 1 D1 victory. Hope YSU doesn't take them lightly

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU - RMU MBB
« on: January 05, 2023, 09:16:10 AM »
YSU is a 7.5-point favorite tonight.

Last year YSU lost both home games to RMU.  They are 7-8 this year and 2-2 in the league.  They beat Wright St by 21 at Wright St, they beat PFW by 5, lost to NKU by only 4 at NKU and lost CSU by 9.  Some of their other losses include Ohio St, Dayton & Marshall.

I feel like this is an important game for YSU.  Need to bounce back after the PFW loss at home, can't lose another one at home if they are going to compete for a title.  Saturday should be a given against IUPUI.  Need to get to 4-2 before heading on the road for 4 straight.

I'd like to see YSU get off to a strong start early.  That seems to be lacking this year.  YSU is only +46 in the first half compared to +119 in the second half.

Coach said in his press conference on Wednesday that they are still looking for a 5th starter.  He mentioned Hunter, McBride, and Lovelace.  Not sure what the deal with Shemar is; he wasn't mentioned.  His mins have dropped.  I know Coach had said he missed 2 days of practice last week due to being stuck in Toronto in the snowstorm and that's why he didn't play much in the CSU game, but did start in the PFW for Cohill then only played the first 3 mins.  He also said Covington is going to play this weekend.

YSU is a 6.5-7.5 point favorite.  I'm a little surprised it's that high.  I figured more in the 3.5-5.5 range.

Pretty big game and weekend for that matter I feel for YSU to establish themselves.  YSU has lost the last 4 to CSU and 9 of the last 10.  They were swept by PFW last year.

CSU enters at 7-6, but 2-0 in the league handling both Detroit & Oakland by 16 & 15 points at home.  After that bad loss to D2 Notre Dame Ohio, CSU has losses to Cincinnati, Ohio, St. Bonaventure, Kent State & Loyola Marymount; all were road losses other than Kent St.

YSU is an 8.5 point favorite.  YSU needs to take care of business tonight and then close out non-conference play with a win against Central Michigan next week.

Need to get Adrian Nelson going again and would like to see a better defensive effort.  Also would like to see so more production out of Shemar, Covington & Hunter.  Seems like McBride wants to come off the bench, but he could easily be starting as could Brandon Rush.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU - Westminster MBB
« on: December 09, 2022, 12:09:16 PM »
Even though it was 7-0 to start, thought YSU looked a bit sluggish early on.  Westminster got a lot of good looks, but couldn't knock them down and was holding YSU to just 1 shot on offense.  YSU was just so much more athletic, bigger, and stronger.

It was good everyone got to play and contributed.  YSU's defense still kind of concerns me; here were a lot of bad breakdowns.  They kind of got lax in the 2nd half and gave up 43, which I know can happen in games like this.  I think if they can improve on that this team is going to be pretty dangerous.  We know they can score and it's a deep roster.  There's 10 guys that can easily start and then you add in Irwin and Shelton.  I was hoping for more improvement from Owens over last year.  Coach has said he's a work in progress.

Bryce McBride has really impressed me this year.  He's really calm on the court and what he did with the triple-double was was really impressive especially the 15 assists, and it's not easy for a guard to get 10 rebounds.  Hard to believe he's on the 2nd in YSU history to do that.  Naz was the other, but he did it with OT.  The fact too that he wants to come off the bench says a lot about him as well.

I was concerned when Covington didn't dress, but sounds like he'll be good to go Sunday.  He hurt his ankle in practice and decided to sit out.
