Bowling Green hires Dino Babers
Updated: December 18, 2013, 6:48 PM ET
By Joe Schad | ESPN

Christopher Hanewinckel/USA TODAY SportsDino Babers went 19-7 in his two seasons at Eastern Illinois, including 12-2 this season.

Dino Babers is leaving Eastern Illinois to be the next coach at Bowling Green, the school announced Wednesday.

Babers was Eastern Illinois' head coach for two seasons, going 19-7, including 12-2 this season. He guided the Panthers to No. 2 in the final regular-season FCS poll, but Eastern Illinois lost to Towson last week in the FCS quarterfinals.

Under Babers' guidance, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo passed for 5,050 yards and 53 touchdowns and won the Walter Payton Award as the top player in FCS.

Babers, who will be the first black coach in Bowling Green football history, succeeds Dave Clawson, who took the job at Wake Forest.

Babers was an assistant at Baylor under Art Briles, coaching Robert Griffin III and utilizes an uptempo, spread offense. Babers, 52, has also been an assistant at UCLA, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and Arizona, San Diego State and Purdue.

The 52-year-old Babers has more than 30 years' experience as an assistant in FBS.

Among other coaches, Bowling Green had also talked to Florida Gators defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin.

This story has been repeated time and time again all across this country.  There are only a limited number of legitimate "big time" programs, and they are arranging themselves into a handful of large, "power" conferences.  Any school that believes that it can compete with those giants is foolish.  Any school that believes that fans respect "make-believe" big time programs is delusional.  Any school that expects the more lucrative guarantees to compensate for dramatically higher operating costs is just plain stupid.

YSU to the MAC!! Nooooo???

How about the mac to YSU instead.

Let the big boys, yes the BIG boys form their own little division, gobble up most of the tv money and then the pretend big boys can merge with the like of YSU where they belong.

This is total conjecture on my part with nothing whatsoever to back it up.  But my first reaction was that Bohl is escaping right before a visit from the NCAA enforcement staff.

That would explain Wyoming  a quick out.

Here is a FINAL score from the remaining Big Sky game:

Eastern Washington 41
South Dakota State 17

If the Big Sky is such a weak conference, what does it say about the 2nd place team from the MVFC losing to Eastern Washington by such a large margin. And, given SDSU destroyed YSU in Youngstown, how could anyone think YSU would win a 2nd round playoff game? YSU likely would have won a 1st round game, then got beat by 10 or more points in round 2.

Complain all you want, YSU did not deserve to be in the playoffs. The team and coaches played and coached their way OUT of the playoffs

Turnovers. I watched the game. Eastern washington is a good team but the To's killed SdsU. They stripped the ball several times

SDSU turned it over twice EW once, turnovers did not dictate the spanking the bunnies got.

3 of the 4 big sky teams lost their 1st game, hard to justify them having all 4 teams in, they did not deserve to be in. If 4 mvc schools had made it and 3 lost like that we would never hear the end of it.

YSU and uni would have fared better.

Not sure the issue this year is MVFC vs. CAA but the OVC, SoCon, and Southland, which were overrated. A solution might be to have an MVFC challenge day against a conference, much like they do in basketball.  Imagine previous year MVFC #1 v. Southland #1, MVFC #2 vs. Southland #2, etc. Something like that would settle many of these issues on the field. Or do it with OVC simply because it is geographically close.

I like the challenge idea, would have to be on a two year cycle. big sky, ovc southern.

Nice post lets_talk - couple of points.

I have not been a big fan of Strollo over the years but I do believe that he has improved quite a bit. At the time I felt that Martin was a great hire, boy was I wrong.

Not sure I remember correctly but wasn't one of the other candidates a former AD from Bowling Green? I thought he was better qualified and when Strollo got the job it looked like a fix.

A new baseball field somewhere around campus or downtown.

Do not see it happening but it would be nice, heck Slippery Rock has one.

I must say that if YSU is not in the field I really do not care who wins and will not follow the games. Do not care for our league so do not care about those two teams either.

Dana Balash on twitter this morning....

(@DanaBalash21) "YSU Football schedule non conference opponents for 2014 appear to be Illlinois, Butler, Duquesne and St. Francis"..

Another cupcake schedule for Wolford.

Slippery Rock, Lock Haven, Alabama A&M the list goes on. We played these teams and folks complained about cupcake schedule. Started playing FBS schools dumped the D2 and still folks complain about a cupcake schedule.

Make up a list of acceptable FCS schools that will play us and not want a return game and send it to the AD. Do not forget the "money" that wants 6 home games.

Me too, IP!!!!

What gives for the future of YSU football?????  Does anyone care to give a thought about that????  Can't remember when I had an encouraging thought (Heacock, you don't agree, that's okay).  I am as I was THREE
Years ago....no play off hopes...so where do we go from here.  Your thoughts!!!!
Where do we go, only one way to go - forward. We only lost to one team that we should have beat. Last two games showed us how high the bar is, Wolf will be back but the other coaches ?????. If he wants to improve Wolf better take a hard look at his recruiting and his staff. Defense needs most of the attention. Dah!

I will still get my season tickets and I will still go to every game.
