YSU Penguin Athletics / Ladies play on Wed
« on: March 14, 2016, 10:19:18 PM »
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Youngstown State women’s basketball team has earned the right to play in a postseason tournament for the third time in the last four years. The Penguins will host Stony Brook on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Beeghly Center in the opening round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The game is presented by Medical Mutual of Ohio, the official healthcare provider of Youngstown State University.

YSU is playing in the WBI, a 16-team tournament played on campus sites, for the first time. It comes after appearances in the Women’s NIT in 2013 and 2015, making this the first time in program history that the Penguins will play in the postseason three times in a four-season span. Stony Brook’s head coach is Youngstown State Athletics Hall of Fame member Caroline McCombs, who was a starter on YSU’s NCAA Tournament teams in 1996 and 1998.

Tickets will be $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12-and-under, and YSU students will be admitted for free with a valid student ID. The YSU Athletic Ticket Office in Stambaugh Stadium will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Penguin Club members and season ticket holders will have until 5 p.m. on Wednesday to purchase their tickets. The Beeghly Center Ticket Office and gates to the arena will open at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. For more information or to order tickets by phone, call (330) 941-1YSU.

Youngstown State enters the WBI with a 19-12 record, one victory away from the 11th 20-win season in program history. The Penguins were the No. 6 seed in last week’s Horizon League Tournament, and they beat Oakland in the opening round before falling to Wright State in the quarterfinals.

Stony Brook will come to Youngstown with a 17-14 overall record, which included an 8-8 mark in the America East Conference. The Seawolves are playing in the WBI for the second straight season, both of which have come with McCombs as their head coach.

Youngstown State and Stony Brook have played twice previously in a home-and-home series in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. Stony Brook beat YSU 54-47 in New York on Dec. 27, 2011, and Youngstown State evened the series with a 76-43 win in Youngstown on Nov. 30, 2012. The winner of Wednesday’s matchup will advance to play either UMBC or Fairfield.

The Horizon League has had success in the first years of the WBI. UIC won the tournament as a No. 4 seed in 2014, and Detroit was the champion as a No. 1 seed in 2013.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Old Friends
« on: January 02, 2016, 06:14:17 PM »
I noticed that several of our old friends (that have made the move to FBS) enjoyed a bowl trip this year. Interesting that at one time all these schools played at the same level as YSU and we beat all of them but one.

Appy St, Western KY, Akron, Boise, Georgia Southern, Middle TN, Marshall and Nevada.

Also, looking at this list makes it easier to understand why NDSU is able to dominate 1AA, it is a very watered down division, not near as competitive as it was 20 years ago. Too many top programs have moved on.

My take on Bo.

Why do opposing teams give a rats tail about Bo, why take shots at him, why question his motives for being at YSU? Do they care that much for YSU that they want someone better for us, Yea I am sure that is it. Let's be real, they simply do not want Bo here because he is a good coach.

Most of us have no idea what all happened at Nebraska and maybe that is for the best. I am a fan of the John Wooden approach but that is not his style.

I admire his stated reasons for being in Y-town, hard to argue his intentions for his family.

How will the players respond, how will the powers to be respond and how will Bo respond. That is our concern, our business.

Bottom line is that only time will tell how history will treat him, but at this time I am glad he is here and am excited about the future.

YSU Penguin Athletics / SDSU recap
« on: October 17, 2015, 08:19:13 PM »
Where the heck were the fans? Only 6 home games a year folks, support the team the weather was not that bad.

D played ok for 3 qtr's.

We have not forced a turnover for over 2 games now. Shot our self in the foot early for the second straight game.

I guess that we were without 3 starters on the o-line, but no excuse, at this level they have to step up.

I wondered how we would respond after last weeks loss, not well. Team had no spark.

Thought that SDSU kept their starters in too long, not cool.

The first time we went on 4th down at the north end, only sent out 1 receiver, scratching my head on that one.

Not a good effort, very frustrating

YSU Penguin Athletics / Ill st recap
« on: October 10, 2015, 11:17:50 PM »
At the risk of being an optimist, I do not like to lose but I think we made a positive statement tonight. We went toe to toe with them. Team could have given up a couple of times but they did not. The birds made a couple of big plays so give them credit. We had the only turnover and a couple of penalties that hurt and we still took them to the limit.

I thought that the crowd was pretty good and they saw a really good game. Anyone that says they will not be back because we lost - please just stay home.

I say that we get payback in the play-offs.

Okay it was ugly, real ugly. Offense just could not get in sync, but when it had to the offense did what it had to do, barely.

I thought that the defense looked good for the most part, the first td by RMU was a shock and that long drive that was all on the ground being the obvious exceptions.

Time will tell against other teams but we had good pressure on the qb and did not allow anything over the middle.

Kicking game needs work.

We won, so learn from it and move on.

General BS / pot holes
« on: March 24, 2015, 10:36:39 PM »
These pot holes are an insult to every taxpayer out there.  Cannot tell me that in 2015 we do not have the technology to construct a road that will not fall apart in 2-4 years. And why do we have to fix a pot hole by making a bump out of it?

Do not spend 1 dime of the states rainy day fund money on fixing them, just build them correctly.

Ok I feel better, well not really.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Tressel sought sage advice before hiring Pelini
« on: January 18, 2015, 09:47:08 PM »
Some interesting tidbits in this article, including this which i'm sure is the argument on justifying money spent on sports.- A 2012 report in the National Bureau for Economic Research found that football success increases alumni donations (particularly to athletics) and helps a school’s academic reputation, as well as the quality and quantity of applicants.

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State president Jim Tressel once tried to recruit Bo Pelini.

He spent several years coaching against Pelini.

But, he admits, he didn’t know Pelini.

“I knew him from a distance,” he said. “But I was impressed with what I had seen.”

So when Pelini emerged as a candidate for YSU’s head coaching job, Tressel made a call to someone who could give an honest evaluation: former Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne, who served as Pelini’s athletic director from 2007-13.

“Tom is a friend and I knew he would be very open with me in terms of pluses and minuses,” Tressel said. “He’s a big fan of Bo Pelini.

“Of course, Bo isn’t perfect — and I haven’t met a perfect guy yet — but he felt that he had grown in his time at Nebraska. It’s not an easy job knowing you have to replace Tom Osborne, whether you’re one or two or three coaches removed.

“Everyone there is still measured by Tom Osborne.”

The same is true of YSU, where Tressel’s two predecessors, Jon Heacock and Eric Wolford, combined to make the playoffs just once in 14 seasons. Tressel made the playoffs 10 times between 1987-2000, winning four national titles and playing for two others.

Since then, Appalachian State (which won three straight titles from 2005-07 and now competes in the FBS) and North Dakota State (which just won its fourth straight title) have spent time atop the FCS.

“It’s tougher now than it was then,” Tressel said of the FCS. “Not that it was easy then, but our league is extremely strong. The competition nationally is extremely strong.

“We [had] two people from our conference in the national championship [NDSU and Illinois State] and we [were not] one of them, so that tells you this league is pretty good.”

Pelini agreed, calling the Missouri Valley a “hell of a conference.”

“They play really good football in this conference,” Pelini said. “Those schools do a heck of a job. I have a lot of respect for the football played at this level. It doesn’t get the hype the BCS schools get but there’s a lot of good football players and a lot of good coaching. It’s a heck of a challenge.”

Since being hired as YSU’s president in the summer, Tressel has kept a low profile when it comes to athletics. He attended the home football games and served as a consultant during the coaching search, but said he’s focused on other things.

“I’ve actually talked to Bo twice — once when he came here [to interview] and once shortly before or after Christmas,” Tressel said. “He’s a very inquisitive guy and I would love to sit and talk with him for hours, but I don’t have hours and neither does he.

“It’s not unlike when Eric was here. Once in a great while, he’d say, ‘Hey, I’m facing this situation and what are your thoughts?’ We’d spend a minute or two on the phone. I hope I can provide that for Bo. But as you know, coaches don’t really have a bunch of idle time and presidents are kind of busy, too.”

A 2012 report in the National Bureau for Economic Research found that football success increases alumni donations (particularly to athletics) and helps a school’s academic reputation, as well as the quality and quantity of applicants.

With YSU facing decreasing enrollment, a playoff-level football team could be a good advertisement for the university.

“I’ve always been a big believer that every single thing you decide to do can be a great contributor the overall situation and the community,” Tressel said. “I love the spirit that the arts bring to a college community and I happen to think athletics is one of the arts, like music or theater or art itself. I think athletics are tremendously important to our community and our Valley and our university, and there’s obviously a lot of excitement about Bo’s hiring.”

YSU Penguin Athletics / FB Players
« on: December 18, 2014, 09:49:04 PM »
I saw a few comments from the players in the paper and all seemed positive. I know there was some talk, before Bo was hired, stating that some players may want to leave.

Anyone hearing anything else about what the players are thinking?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Playoff attendance
« on: December 06, 2014, 08:45:58 PM »
Seems that it is just not YSU that has a problem getting butts in the seats. Looked at the announced attendance for 7-8 of the games and only one had over 10,000. ndsu at 18,000.

Under 9,000 in Chatty - 4000 in NH - Ill st just 5,500.

Unless the schools are fudging the numbers, it is pretty sad.
