YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: 2015 YSU Football Recruiting Thread
« on: February 04, 2015, 09:56:31 PM »
A.  The arguments of the MVFC having "passed the FCS" and "Size on Size" are infinitely more laughable than 17k attendance.   Given a good game against Narduzzi and Pitt I could see 17k for the home opener if marketed correctly.  But pretending that YSU needs Marcus Mariotta or Braxton Miller to come in to win a IAA championship is ridiculous at worst.

B.  The local strategy isn't a great one in terms of talent, but in terms of work and pride its a great idea.  Lets face it, No one takes Youngstown more seriously than those from Youngstown.  Local kids are going to be exponentially more prideful and loyal when it comes to the success of YSU.  Now the older generations may think the scholarship and "opportunity" are supposed to make you prideful and loyal, wherever your from, the simple fact is YSU is not that kind of school and with this generation, it does not.

C.  Id rather have a team full of 2 star recruits that will play until their burger every week, Than a team full of talented "cod-pieces" who think they've only "ended up" at a program and will be playing in the league soon anyway.

D. This approach takes a coaches that can make athletes better, not just keep them good.  From the HC to the weight room, things better be on point, Or it will end horribly.

And this speaks to why the NCAA is a joke and should be at the least taxed and regulated.  SMU gets the death penalty for paying players to win championships.  PSU got to live after covering up a serial child rapist.  Forget the fines, the bowl ban, the statue and the wins. A. Child. Rapist.  The NCAA had a chance to do what Pennsylvnia state law enforcement either wouldn't or couldn't do, and they balked.  The simple fact that the Penn State Rabble couldn't just be happy not getting the death penalty they rioted.  All parties showed everything wrong with the NCAA octopus.  If anyone truly thinks that the all powerful "JoPa" was just a nice senile old man I have some good real estate on Pluto for sale.  They should have taken more wins, and shut down the whole business.  As for all the good he's done....Im still waiting to see this list, other than building buildings in Happy Valley and overall creating an entire university as a shrine to himself?...yeah i thought not.

If the YSU front office is any reflection of the population of this chatboard and what I assume is the community, than I can see where a majority of the issues come from.  Refusal to take criticism, unrealistic expectations, an unhealthy homogeneity demanded at all times e.g. "youngstown guys", and any questioning of decisions is met with cries of traitor-ism.  Sounds like 1984 to me.  Support with an unquestioning demeanor is for married men, nothing else.

If Pelini is a smart man, which with his tirade at his age (you'd think his vocabulary would be larger), is hard to discern, before YSU was even a thought in his mind he knew one thing, Being a Head coach at an FBS(Power 5) school is a resume bullet point that never goes away.  He could win 3 'chips at YSU, and then apply for another Million $ coaching job without even mentioning YSU or FCS, Fact.  To me this is a plus for YSU, he's not in a hurry or desperate.  Now as for him being difficult to work with, not a huge stretch of the imagination to believe that if he is a hot-head that seemingly, is unapologetic about a great deal, however this would mean that whatever staff he does have would be fiercely loyal, which could be both good and bad.  One thing is for certain however,   We will soon know whether he can COACH.  Not just put SEC and BIG XII talent on the field and chew up useless wins.  Not, somehow ;), go from coaching in High School to falling ass-backwards into coaching Montana, Young and Bono.  But Coach up an athlete, an athlete with most likely zero of the polish he's used to.  Certainly an interesting time in an interesting career.

kid is a dog on tape.  Unless hes a preferred walk-on, whatever strength coach Pelini YSU has in the fall spring better be a miracle worker.

I've never seen any school on any team for any reason post a job if renewal is an eventuality, it is not required, and just not done.  The only reason I would think one would do something like that is if the candidates that come in are deemed less than what you currently have.

Very simply:  You cant have both.   If real student-athletes matter perhaps funding should match that feeling.  Not new uniforms and helmets every year.

I understand your point, but I believe if you are talking funding it is totally different sources and difficult to compare.  For my information, what type of jobs are available with a major in General Studies?

according to some on this board, Tressel can all but walk on water, hard to believe that line items and accounting would be a weakness here.  General Studies perhaps might be useful in managing grocery stores, or just an overall advancement in some sort of service industry.  Not useless by any means, but you not the going to make a regional or national splash churning out Darden restaurant GM's.

Very simply:  You cant have both.  Unless you are a power 5 team, you cannot have both.  Look at the Ivy league teams.  If your Harvard's football coach your only task is to beat Yale.  You absolutely cannot practice kids 40 hours a week (even though NCAA rule says 20 hr max)  and expect kids to be Organic Chem Majors.
YSU has, rough estimate 400 SA?  and there are 2 academic service professionals on staff?  Kent State has 10, Pitt has 10 plus a staff of 5 for Life Skills.  These are not numbers that will encourage or create academic all-stars, when most of your recruiting area are kids that are considered at-risk.  If real student-athletes matter perhaps funding should match that feeling.  Not new uniforms and helmets every year.

I dont care about his swearing...many coaches have said much worse.  Teaching players, and role models and all that is non-sense, This isnt the 60's and the sport of football beyond Pee-wee (and in some cases not even that) is not at all about building character... it is about the institutions and what they can get out of it, be it money, free advertising or admissions.
With that being said the HC is a figure head, your lead marketer, the face of the athletic department and in most cases the University.  The thing that sticks out the most is apparently Pelini is not good at playing the game, and that is ultimately why he got booted from Nebraska, point blank.....maybe he wont have too play games being "back home", as nepotistic as YSU operations seem to be.  But it raises huge questions as to this guys attitude towards his superiors, and the true message he delivers.   If I'm the board of trustees, President and the AD, the first time I do something he doesn't like I have to worry about the health of my institution.  And if it will be on the news.  However that all goes away if he wins....IF,  he wins.

Nearly all mid-major and lower-teir Universities take the easiest route, its the only way to ensure compliance and not get sanctioned on Title IX.  Not an indictment on anyone, just the truth.

1. If the refs dont call it, its not a foul ;D

2.  As long as the screener remains stationary the person with the ball can manipulate the situation however they can, Jordan was known for this, part of the Triangle offense, exploits what a coach thinks are athletic mismatches.

Stoops wasn't  used for local recruiting. He was there as a firewall for Wolf for  angry parents and coaches in the area who wondered why their local limited talent "star" wasn't recruited by YSU. Its going to get much funnier as delusional Youngstown folks expect a former Mooney player   now the coach at YSU  gets put on the hot seat to sign limited talents from Mooney and the area, thus dooming the football program he is supposed to lead to bigger and better things.  ;D

I'm telling you, its going to get funny as he11 around here.  8)

I agree with this point.  But only to the extent if hes unable to recruit good players nationally, if he cant compete with the MAC in recruiting regionally, or the power 5 regionally then he's in a worse boat than Wolf was in because of the community perception.  Im curious as to what demands for "recruiting improvements" he will make and how much the end cost will be.

Its a factor because its a low fan participation sport, contributes less to general population admission than any other sport but golf.  And wrestling does not have the donors golf has to stay afloat.  Unfortunately an easy cut because of title IX and very few women actually wrestle.

Only problem (if we were to add wrestling and/or men's soccer), wouldn't we need to add an associated number of female sports scholarships?  (In order to comply with Title IX).

Depends on what branch of title IX our university has chosen to show compliance, its never just as simple as dollars=dollars, which is why title IX is so diabolical,  these easiest route is also the easiest to manipulate compliance protocol. Needs to be rewritten terribly, especially with the Power 5 coming to power.

I wonder how much he's getting paid...and who is footing the bill.  My first guess is way more than people will estimate, and if that guess is true, what will be the fallout?

I'm curious as to what "details" people think needs 2 weeks to be worked out.  Once you get past the money (YSU's AD is an accountant, should be pretty simplistic)  what other details are left??  If there is a problem the problem is money.
It would be HIGHLY doubtful that this next coaches salary matches that of Wolford, with the current climate at YSU, (faculty vs. athletics) that would reflect quite poorly on Tressel.  That is the problem when gambling like they did with wolford, you jack the price up, that price becomes associated with your institution, now the job is open and you lower the price, that looks bad.  In an era of expanding football budgets, a coach does not want to see a contracting one.  Its like being in an arms race with a slingshot.  Findidng a suitable D1 coach who is smart enough to know their worth will be tough.  Unless your looking to turn the job into a stepping stone with soft, easy out contracts.

As long as a coach is named soon and wins games with the talent we have returning, it should not be a problem who the coach is.
With that being said, whoever the coach is he had better make sure not to do what Wolf did and get rid of 80% of the former regime's players. That would be a bad look for that coach IMHO.
This is really a good post and I couldn't agree more. We need to keep our current staff and players intact..if the record is not broke don't try to fix it. This is a young team with tons of talent that is just beginning to learn how to win and make the critical plays when needed. The transition for the players to a head coach is hard enough let alone staff changes and in and out transfers..unity will be key here..and the next head coach needs to be on the same page with our current staff..We need our next head coach to be a great game manager and keep the players under control and the rest will take care of itself..Bottom line we need discipline installed in this program..out of the 5 losses how many could've been preventive from stupid mistakes that was not youth related? Well I can think of a few

The above is Highly Doubtful.  It's a world where the coach now believes the scheme and their cleverness is paramount to the actual talent and capability of the athletes they recruit, so they come up with these new cookie cutter offenses to dumb down the game, to make it easier to "scheme".   Unless they plan on unearthing Knute Rockne, Hank Stram or re-animating Mike Ditka, that will never happen.
Its not about actual coaching anymore, its about out-smarting instead of out-playing, out-hitting or out husseling the other team.  Its about recruiting to fit your scheme, rather than your scheme fitting the best players at your disposal.  Since the scheme is the most important thing the new HC "has" to clean house, to make sure everyone is loyal to their way of doing things, and will all agree that his idea is the smartest in the room.  But don't worry, the old staff will land on their feet.  Football is the worlds greatest recycler.
