YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Hunter Wells
« on: September 14, 2014, 11:00:46 AM »
Hunter Wells ball placement and his ability to take something off his throws is really impressive. On 2 of the td passes to J.B. wells was under pressure and there was very good coverage on J.B. he put it right on the money. Needless to say the 55 yard throw into a strong wind proves something (probably could've thrown 65) some people on this forum still like to question his arm strength and accuracy. Let it be known he can throw the the rope ball and the long ball and just not the rain bows. And yes he throws the arc ball for a reason and is really good at it. Where the coaches go with Wells is anyones guess. I'm taking into consideration this was Butler but you have to like what you see from the true freshman to this point. He was a proven leader in high school and showed that yesterday..why some people are out to prove Wells wrong I'll never know!!

My guess is wells made his mark in the summer before camp ever began. At some point Montgomery will have to throw down the field from the pocket. You can't assume the defense and running game will be clicking on all cylinders week in and week out. The quarterback draws and short passing game will only be effective so long. Given Nania's height it's a cause for concern. Several blind spots in the passing lanes and a higher percentage of batted down balls. I do agree with Paladin the next 3 games will tell us a lot..it will be very interesting to say the least !!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Starting Quarterback Poll

Batty you have some good points! Competition breeds success at the D-1 level. Congrats to Dante and I'm not surprised Wells was pushing him along the way. To have a tall strong armed quarterback like Wells who can make all the throws and spread it around like he does at the F.C.S. level is rare.I'm really surprised he wasn't enrolled into Y.S.U. in the spring. He's not the most mobile quarterback but has a very nice spin move in the pocket and has the ability to elude defenders with his long arms. He can also pick up necessary yardage on the ground when needed. Has to learn not to press at the next level and just manage the game. The more his skills developed and he gets bigger stronger and faster he will be a formidable force for any M.V.F.C.defense to deal with. As far as Davis goes Wells had over twice as many pass attempts in the scrimmages and Davis only had one completion so that should tell some people something. I believe the coaches have a plan for Wells at some point this season. .when and where remain to be seen!!

Aside from holding their own football camps coach Wolford and staff attend various satellite camps throughout the Midwest in search of the best possible players to help them challenge for a M.V.C. championship year in and year out. Does anyone find it funny that Paladin likes to question their decisions other then me?? Some of his other posts criticize various positions on the Y.S.U. football team as well. This certainly does nothing to boost the moral of the players. There is a lot of luck recruiting at the D-1AA level. To get a commitment from a 3 star athlete with multiple D-1A offers is highly unlikely. I played on the defensive side of the ball in the MAC and have had the opportunity to coach against Hunter Wells on more then one occasion. Believe me his arm strength and accuracy will not be an issue at Y.S.U.- Hands down he has one of the strongest arms ohio has to offer. I will agree with Paladin on the weight training, he will need to put on at least 20 pounds or more then likely he will be redshirted next season. Its my understanding he performed very well at the Indiana and pitt camps and received M.V.P. at each one. If timing was on his side we wouldn't even be having this discussion!! Mark Porter comments in the Youngstown Vindicator were dead on-one of his clients and trying to promote his site FUNNY!! I wonder if Paladin was watching his highlights from his sophomore season on scouting ohio?? I wonder if he bothered watching his hudl video from his junior season or if he has seen him throw this year before his evaluation!! This will be my last post concerning Hunter Wells. If Hunter does attend Y.S.U and once he takes the field I will be more then happy to carry out this conversation at stambaugh with anyone including Paladin!!

Just a few thoughts I would like to share concerning Hunter Wells from fairless. I have had the opportunity to watch Hunter play on a few different occasions and viewed all film. Y.S.U. fans you are getting more of a B.C.S and F.B.S. recruit then a F.C.S. one!! Two of the reasons he wasn't more heavily recruited was because he was under weight as junior and didn't do his summer camp tour untill this summer. As far as level of competition goes its one of the last things the Y.S.U. coach would look at when evaluating the QB position. If Hunter played at a D-1 school with stiffer competition he would probably put up bigger numbers. It's my understanding all the yards the previous seasons were very hard earned as he did not have the supporting cast he does this one. The coaching staff realizes they got a big time steal with Hunter..The possibility of a larger school coming in and trying to lure him away should be a cause for concern!!
