I am afraid that we just don’t have the $$$ to bring in good assistant coaches.this is not necessarily HC’s fault.

I'm not watching.  Why? Because we are still developing our talent and we won't likely beat a team with a lot of seniors and a seasoned coach.  We need too much in the way of assistant coaches.  This will be a lesson.  It appears we aren't doing well based on the comments.

I think it is difficult to decide who might be a favorite in this game. No games played as of late between a MVFC team and the conference that Villanova plays in. We always hear about how superior the MVFC is, so this game will be a big test between their conference winner and us, the 3rd place team in the MVFC. The few clips I saw of Villanova shows them to be a big team which would seem to fit in the MVFC. Also we need to see if our pass defense has improved late in the year or still has the significant weakness shown much of the year. In the Tressel years we always peaked at the end of the year in the playoffs. It will be interesting to see if Phillip's team has done the same.

The next step to the evolution of Phillips' team must be the ability to play well on the road. I would love to see evidence of that happening tomorrow, but I fear that we are not there yet. I also think that our young defensive coaches will not be up to the task, and that Villanova will capitalize on blown assignments. I sure hope that I am wrong.

I agree 100%

The University doesn't have the money to replace the HC.  Please keep in mind that 20% of FCS football programs make the playoffs.  This is not what I would call a great  accomplishment.  Not to mention FCS football is a shell of its past.

Bad take.  The current version of the playoffs remains superior to the current version of the FBS.  And, since they've gone to 24 teams from 16 the playoffs haven't really been watered down too badly.  They Autobids from inferior conferences lose, but in 2016 the expansion helped YSU, which was a team that got hit toward the end of the year. YSU was one of the last teams in and wouldn't have been in if the playoffs weren't expanded and we made it to the national championship game.  We also played the most games of any team in college football, as a result of the extra game in the first round as well as the increase in the number of games played that year.

In reality nothing has really changed except that the possibility of a few more deserving teams get in, and YSU is the proof the expansion made the playoffs more competitive.  I agree that they need to eliminate the autobid from conferences that don't belong due to their lack of scholarships.  You should have the 63 to qualify for playoffs.

By the way, we may have beaten JMU in 2016 had players not been busted for smoking marijuana under Pelini.  We also had one player that tested positive for performance enhancing drugs.  That's what we got with Pelini. We lost a significant number of players going into the National championship game as a result of this issue. Bo produced a bad culture. Something that Phillips seems to have corrected dramatically.  These kids play for each other and exhibit very good traits which is something we should all be proud of.

Our odds are now equivalent to teams seeded #5 and #8

Hopefully this gives people perspective on how far we've actually come since Pelini left the program in shambles.

People need to think again about hating on Phillips.  We have a young team and a bright future (as long as we get a QB and fill some holes).  Much more difficult to replace holes when it comesnto the OL.and DL.  Hopefully we can go to the portal for some skill positions.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: NCAA football

Here's my take for what it's worth.

The FBS Power 2 will likely break off from the NCAA (similar to the NAIA).  When I say power 2 , I'm referring to B1G  and SEC similar to the NFL AFC and NFC. This will leave a watered down field of conferences that will be the current defacto version of the FCS.  These teams will participate in bowl games but the power 2 will take the Major New Year's Day Bowls and rotate them for their 12 team playoff.

The NCAA isn't going to allow the formation of another FBS conference, so you will have to be invited.......and that's exactly what many of the teams in the East Coast have done.

There are something like 132 teams in the FCS, but who is left that can really compete? Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, JMU and now Delaware are leaving.  That means that Villanova is the only CAA member that can compete and Maybe Furman in the So Con.  The OVC lost Jacksonville State and took the least competitive MVFC Teams.

So who's actually left to compete for a national title?  The MVFC and the Big Sky and that's it. Maybe the SWAC on a long shot but only 1 team per decade.

As I've said before, we are way better than 90% of the FCS. It's not crazy that the MVFC got 6 bids, the competition just isn't there anymore.  There are more teams like NDSU and SDSU looking for an invitation to an FBS conference (like the Mountain West).

A lot of these teams are just making the jump without an actual fit (i.e. Delaware). There's so much disparity in the FacS today as well.  We have teams in the NEC with 45 scholarships that can be beaten by D2 and NAIA  teams  and still get an autobid into the playoffs.  Then you have teams like SDSU this year, who could beat every team in the Sunbelt, American Conference and half the B1G.  In fact, I would argue they could potentially win the B1G West.....and there's evidence to support that;  last year SDSU wasn't as good and played Iowa. They lost 7-3 at Iowa but Iowa didn't score a TD.  They got 7 points with 2 safeties and a field goal.  SDSU is built like a B1G team and they're drastically different from the bottom of the FCS but the same goes for YSU.  We could beat many FBS "in name only" schools.

So the FCS is going to be a 2 league division (when it comes to competition).

However, at least for some period of time, teams like JMU that have made the jump will be able to make the 12 team playoff against the legitimate contenders in the FBS because they will take the best team from the group of 5.  That may be why a lot of these teams want to go.  (That being said JMU isn't eligible for bowl games or playoffs yet).  My point is that there's national attention and notoriety given to the teams that can compete and these schools want the national spotlight.

Interesting they're saying we have FBS ambition.  Not sure if this is really affiliated with Conference USA but interesting to say the least

Strollo bid 20k seats. I bet it is about half the selling price, so that would be about $10 x 20k or $200,000 we paid the NCAA to host. Does not matter how many people actually show, we still owe. I doubt we have ever recovered our payout, even in the 90's. Believe me, He bought us into the post-season. I have to respect that.

It honestly felt like more than 3800 were in the stands. I was going to guess closer to 5k.

Anyway don't get too down on the attendance figures Thanksgiving weekend is just a bad weekend for small college football. I've been going to Mount Union playoff games for years, and thanksgiving weekend is Always sparsely attended compared to the rest of their games.

It's a combination of travel plans, students not being on campus etc.

Didn't look like 3800 on the tube..

I thought that 3800 was low! Thought that it was better to report a low number to save some bucks.

Errr. Why would he bid 20k seats? Rooney Field (Duquesne's home field) only seats 2200. Couldn't he have just  bid above whatever their max capacity was? Where else would the NCAA hold a game other than our place or at Duquesne?

What if.....and it's just a what if......the higher bid helps you get in in future years if on the bubble?

Our O line seems to have problems against a 3 man front

Wrong. SIU period

44
They run a 3-3-5.  Licking our chops if they stay in that defense.

45
Our defense is just pathetic

They only gave up 74 yards rushing and 74 yards passing and one score.  Did they jump offsides and extend a drive for Duquesne?  Yes.  Did the offense help them by possessing the ball? Yes.

How is that so different from Tressel's teams that had an OL that controlled the games and had "championship drives" ?
