YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU to Name Ethan Faulkner MBB Coach!

YSUGO  what is the name of the other coach?????

Bob Huggins 😂

I think Huggins would of been a disaster hire.  He's a great basketball coach but his baggage and the fact that he's 70 years old probably would of been a quick fix at best.
It's all about recruiting whether it's HS guys or portal and hopefully Ethan can be that guy.  Hopefully YSU has some NIL money because if not sadily you can't compete.

Agree, when I read this, the name Bo Pelini came to mind.
The nil $$ for mid major programs will be a real issue. I read an article yesterday reporting that Zach Eden of Purdue was ranked at #7 with nil of $800,000.
I wonder how much our guys were making in the last couple years.

Realistically this level of D1 basketball is a stepping stone for coaches and players to bigger and better places. Watching the tournament teams have many kids that have transferred in from the mid majors and I’m sure the same is true for coaches.

Agree. It used to be just business and career decisions for the coaches to move up depending on their levels of success and accomplishments.
Because of NIL and liberalized NCAA transfer rules, this model has now also become applicable to players.
Unfortunately, the low to mid major schools now become the minor leagues or developmental leagues for the power 5 conferences.
It is difficult enough for mid major schools to compete with the big boys with basketball being the only revenue sport for these universities where majority of the budget could flow into basketball to keep it competitive.
It is even more difficult for schools like YSU where major funding is channeled into the football program.
I don’t see how things could improve unless enrollment at YSU could magically increase or some depth pocket donors are willing to write a big check to support the athletic programs.
The other option is to schedule more money games on the road to get more $$$ as what Cleveland State did years ago under Rollie Messamino (spelling?).

I figured he would be the guy being he has the title Associate Head Coach and seems poised to take the next step. Curious if going internal will help keep the remaining roster intact.

I wonder if Calhoun plans to take any assistant coaches (who came with him from Fairmont State) to Utah State.

I wish him luck.  He steps into a 28 win team that had made the tournament.   Good spot.  Now who.and do we have a national search for the head job?  We cannot wait to fill this spot recruiting season now.  I expect to hear about more transfers out of the program.   Complete new team next season.

I also wish him success.
AD has to know this is coming. Hopefully, he has already had someone in the pipeline, just as our women’s program. It is critical to have a jump in the portal.

Calhoun’s departure might have something to do with some of our current players entering the portal. It would not be a surprise that we will have more, including de-commission of some of the incoming players.

Here is a quote from the Oakland coach.

"He's going to get offered so much money and I can't [match that]. We've got a 'Keep Trey Townsend Fund' going from our [NIL] collective, and we might be able to get $40-50,000 in there, but he's looking at $250-300,000 from what I'm being told. So, it's going to be hard for me to tell him to stay."

Gee, he is expecting to make more $$ than our coach.

Can’t really blame him. In a capitalistic society, he is free to make whatever $$ that people are willing to pay him. This is especially true for those who will never make it to nba. Make $$ now while you can.

Like most of the industrial companies, there are very little loyalty between employers and employees anymore since very few companies are offering pensions. The relationship are “at will” between them (employers can terminate employment at anytime for whatever reasons and employees can quit at anytime). People make decisions based on their personal benefits ( not company’s).The retirement $$ is now the 401k which employees can take with them when they leave.

If the mid major guy can expect to make this much, how much are the power 5 guys…..
Colleges may have to start looking at revenue sharing…..

How much more is that than what coach makes now?  just wondering!  I still think he gets another oppotunity with a major program!

He makes $300,000 base salary through  the 2027-2028 season, but there are a lot of bonuses in there.  Here's the contract https://ogden_images.s3.amazonaws.com/www.vindy.com/images/2023/03/31094720/J.-Calhoun-Contract.pdf

Call me old fashion, I don’t understand this. If he just signed the contract extension till 2028, what was he doing to interview for another mid major program already.

When Tressel signed his contract, he had an escape cause for Big 10 (specifically Ohio State). He incited at the time, if  he didn’t get the OSU job after interviewing, he would stay at YSU.

I don't think that is a good fit for him

I would’ve thought he next move would be to the major programs (I.e. power 5).
May be SIU is willing to offer him $$$. Money talks.

Was that comment about the YSU President search process meant to be sarcasm?
The board of trustees hired the president without much of a search. It was widely reported in the media. It is a fact and not meant to be sarcastic.
That has nothing to do with the qualifications of the person. It was the process being questioned. Personally, I think Tressel has been a great president and Johnson will probably do the same to move the university forward.
IMO, today, the president must be able run the university as a business enterprise and not just focusing on the academics.

So happy for Oakland and the Horizon League!  YSU lost two close games to Oakland, shows how good we were.

I still have nightmares from that home loss at YSU. The last play, when we were up 2 with 3 seconds left, the guy came around the high pick screen at the top of the key. Our big guy didn’t step to contest the 3 point shot……we lost by 1.
Kentucky should have watched the Oakland game at YSU.where they shot over 80% from the 3…
