YSU Penguin Athletics / National Letter of Intent Day!!!!
« on: February 05, 2013, 09:38:56 AM »
What is the general consensus as to what will happen with the football signings?  As an outsider, it sure seems like things have been pretty quiet this year (compared to years past).  I know that there are probably less scholarships available to this particular class but...  we need to have a great class coming in here.  Thoughts?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Recruiting: Why no commitments yet????!

I said it before... someone from the staff needs to go pay those two kids at Seneca Valley a visit.  I saw them play last night in a huge victory over Pittsburgh Central Catholic.  Scouts from James Madison University were there and were VERY impressed.  The RB was just the WPIAL player of the week with 310 yards and SEVEN touchdowns in one game... he was great again last night.  Runs hard and runs fast.

I'm actually encouraged by what I am seeing at the games from the crowd.  I had been away from YSU footbal for almost 10 years.  Last season, my wife and I drove up from Pittsburgh for a game and I was shocked at how empty the stadium was:(  This season, my wife and I have gone to all three games so far.  The crowds are better this year for those NC games than last year, IMO.  Also, I agree that the fans should be louder and get more involved.  Once we get everyone "packed in" I think you will see a change in the atmosphere and involvement.  Two more points:  #1- we brought our two daughters (ages 5 and 3) to the game and although they didn't watch very much, they loved singing the fight song, the bands, and all of the people.  #2- after the game, we went to Inner Circle in Poland.  We sat right beside DJ Main (#77) and his family.  I witnessed DJ represent our University in the BEST possible way.  About 1/2 dozen young kids approached him and he was GREAT with them.  He asked them if they were at the game... asked them what they thought... and asked them to come back next week... thanked them for their support... took a photo with them... way cool stuff.  I don't know anything about DJ at all but... my first impression is AWESOME.  I look forward to watching the OL push around some UNI DE's.  #lovingYSUfootball2012

YSU Penguin Athletics / Western PA recruits
« on: September 10, 2012, 09:44:55 AM »
Couple of great players over at Seneca Valley.  Jordan Brown (QB) and Forrest Barnes (RB) are on the Post Gazette's Fabulous 22 preseason poll.  (In other words they are two of the top 22 players in the entire WPIAL).  Lots of big name schools are looking at them but, no offers yet.  Watched them both have very good games against Pine Richland this past weekend.  I wonder if either of these two guys are on YSU's radar?  I know that JMU is very interested in the QB.  Brown's brother was the starter at U of Maryland this year until he tore his ACL.  Brown can throw AND is very mobile with decent size.  Barnes is the kind of back that YSU has had great success with... he is maybe a little undersized but strong and a WPIAL 100M sprinting champion.  Anyone who has access to coach Wolf or the recruiting coordinator should make sure he is at least aware of these two guys.  Short drive to S.V.... less than an hour.

I agree with the condition of the on field mic system.  It never seems to work correctly.  Also, If I win the lottery, I am buying a whole new speaker system for Stambaugh Stadium.  The current system has no "punch" what-so-ever.  Didn't they used to have speakers at field level aimed up at the crowd in addition to the speakers at the top of the stadium?  I wonder why they stopped that?  When the team is coming out of the tunnel and "Welcome to the Jungle" sounds like it is being played on a portable am radio... who does that "fire-up"?  I hope there is a plan to upgrade the speaker system, soon.  It stinks!!!!

Also, as my wife and I walked across campus prior to the game, she commented on the lack of landscape "up-keep" on our campus.  She is NOT a YSU alum... so, she sees things as they really are.  C'mon Building and Grounds Maintenence... pull those weeds and do a better job of trimming and edging... more pride in our University, please.

We were at James Madison University over the summer... what a fantastic campus that is... very well maintained... and that football stadium they have there is VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!  Winning will help get the recruits on campus but, the little things might help "seal the deal".

Tha was a fun game to attend.  The Pitt fans were VERY impressed with the whole YSU representation.  When we arrived, the Heinz Field staff said... "Wow, do you guys travel well, lot's of red and white here today".  After the 3rd quarter when many Pitt fans started leaving... several different people said to our group, "you guys have a really nice team, congrats".  Even the YSU Pride Marching Band is obviously getting better and growing:)  The players on the team gave high fives to all the fans that lined the front row of the stadium after the game.  It all felt really GREAT!!  FEAR THE PENGUINS!!!!  My wife and I were probably not going to come to the Valpo game but, we changed our minds last night after that win.  We want to go on this whole ride.  Maybe we can get Stambaugh back to the way it was during the Tressel years.  Let's PACK THE ICE CASTLE!!!!!  C'Mon folks, get your tickets:)

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU releases depth chart

D'Vontae Davis?  What is his deal?  He was with the team at the start of camp, right?  Didn't make the depth chart?  All that talent... what's he doing?  Any scoop?

Pitt has two other good (but relatively untested) rb's in Isaac Bennett and Rushell Shell (freshman from Hopewell).  Safeties and Defensive Lines at Pitt are really good.  This should be a fun game to watch.  Let's go guins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Scalzo: Penguins break camp prepped for Pitt
« on: August 23, 2012, 01:16:04 PM »
Being a YSU fan in Pittsburgh, I can tell you that Pitt has strengths in the Defensive backfield and Defensive line.  Aaron Donald is a BEAST!!!!!  Our Offensive Line (as experienced as it is) will be greatly challenged.  I would say, look for Hess to get the TE's involved early to get those linebackers (who are suspect at Pitt) out of the way.  Hopefully then, our RB's can make a little bit of yardage and move the chains.  I think the big play from our offense could be tough to come by in this game.  Pitt's Offense has some weaknesses... #1 Offensive Line is very much patchwork at this point (or young)... Tino Sunseri (qb) is in his 3rd offensive system in 3 years and has had his ups and downs (mostly downs)... wide receivers have injuries... rb's are good especially if Ray Graham is healthy.  Here is what I think could happen...  a relatively lower scoring game.  YSU needs to stop the run first and make Tino throw it.  Then we will see if our db's our as improved as we think they are.  I'm excited to see our new Defensive philosophy/scheme.  Got my tickets to the game today... Sitting on the 50 yard line behind YSU's bench about 15 rows up.  We will be surrounded by a sea of blue and gold but....  YSU will know that we are there.  C'Mon boys... give us something to get REALLY EXCITED ABOUT.  LET'S GO GUINS!!!!  We will be cheering loudly and proudly wearing our red and white.  HERE WE GO!!!!!  I actually like this new coaching staff at PITT but, for the game on Sept. 1... it is YSU ALL THE WAY.  I can route for PITT in the other 11 games they play.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Darius Patton
« on: March 18, 2012, 07:16:53 AM »
Read in the Post Gazette this a.m. that Darius Patton has left the Univ. of Pitt football team for personal reasons.  Anybody hearing any rumors?  They are running a pro-style offense at Pitt now... probably doesn't fit his type of game as well as what Fraud Graham was trying to run :)  You think there is any chance he follows in dad's footsteps and transfers to YSU?

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU/Valpo Game!!!
« on: February 12, 2012, 09:59:33 AM »
First off, let me say that I have been reading the forums on here for the past few years!!!  I really love it (mostly).  Being from the Pittsburgh area and with two very young daughters... I don't get to YSU sporting events as often as I would like.  Having said this... Last night my wife and I (along with another couple) had a "date night" to Youngstown from Pittsburgh.  We ate at the Golden Dawn (Chops and Meatball Splashes) and then went over to campus for the game.  I gotta say... I think we will be back again for another game this year.  Coach Slocum, players, etc.  GREAT JOB!!!  That was really fun to watch!!!  It's that type of performance that will bring us back again.  #3 and #23  (Perry and Brooks?) were awesome.  The couple I was with had recently attended a Pitt vs. Louisville game at "the Pete" and they both said that this YSU game... was more fun to watch than Pitt.  We will be back this season!!!  CONGRATS!!  Oh and BTW... I cheer rather loudly and stay until the end:)  Side note:  We thought the pep band sounded pretty good.  Congrats Dr. Payne!!!
