YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Assistant Coaches

While Pelini wasn’t ready to release any names on Monday — “We’ll release it all when everything is in place and ready to go” — a source said he plans to retain offensive coordinator Shane Montgomery, a former head coach at Miami (Ohio) who spent the last five years on Eric Wolford’s staff. Linebackers coach Ron Stoops (a fellow Cardinal Mooney graduate and former assistant for the Cardinals) and safeties coach Michael Zordich (a former assistant at Cardinal Mooney) also will be back and offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo is likely to return, the source said. Defensive coordinator Jamie Bryant will not return.“I’m looking for high-energy guys, guys that share my philosophy,” Pelini said of his coaching staff. “Guys I know or guys I get to know that really fit what I want to do and how we’re gonna run the program and what we want to do to help these kids grow. That’s what it’s all about.” - See more at: http://www.vindy.com/news/2015/jan/06/pelini-settles-in-at-ysu/#sthash.clyVcQe6.dpuf

0505,

I have never understood your animosity toward Montgomery.  On the radio several years ago, Wolford was asked who made the final decision on what play to call.  He responded that he did.  I distinctly remember this because it came at a time when the offense was performing at a high level and I thought that this arrogant coach won't even give his assistants proper credit.  Now assuming this is true (Wolford said a lot of things), does not Wolford shoulder most of the blame for the second half meltdowns?  If these rumors are true and Pelini is happy with Montgomery, so am I.

Wick,

If that is true, then I don't have a problem with Montgomery staying, if offered.  Now, if Montgomery had last say so on play calling and in-game adjustments, then he needs to go as well.

You make a great point btw.  I never thought about that.

Redringo, but is it true that the AD didn't talk much to him?  How about not coming in and visiting/spending time with players?

In his press conference here, he was pretty clear that things seemed fine when Coach Osborne was the AD.  Just not with the new guy.

I get your point though, he has had some pretty embarrassing moments on the sideline.  And to all the folks who know him here, I get the whole passion and wanting to win.  But everyone here has to admit (or at least those who have seen his outbursts during games, which I have), he really needs to work on changing that side of his passion.

I would just love to see him create a wonderful legacy at YSU.  At the end of the day, it didn't really matter to me who got the job.  I just want to see that individual be wildly successful at YSU.  In this case, it's Bo Pelini and I hope he hits a grand slam in Youngstown.

Pally, I'm not sure I've ever agreed with anything you have said on this forum or that I ever will again.  But, in this case, you make a very valid point!!!  Kudos to you.

Yep, I have to agree now that I've heard the recording.  No where near as bad as what I thought it was going to be.

What I found funny about it (and never realized), Pelini's rant against the fans and university started after that guy got the AD job.

I hope you don't think I feel this is an "I told you so" moment.  Because it's not.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha.....you're killing me.  It's pretty bad.

The AD there is an ******** and did Miami dirty.  He's just at Nebraska waiting for the Wisconsin job.  I don't really think saying those words are even bad.

I'm absolutely on your side with this.  But it's pretty bad.  I actually laughed when I saw it trending on Twitter.  I knew it was only a matter of time before something like that showed up.

with Bo Pelini.  Ouch, he apparently held nothing back in final talk with his players at Nebraska.

The most intriguing thing that I'm looking at right now.  We'll get to see if Eric Wolford was a great recruiter/bad coach.  Or a bad recruiter/worse coach.   I'm very interested to see how his players play under a new regime.

Never thought I would have the opportunity to play for a guy like Bo Pelini. Can't wait for spring ball!

Bo Pelini is our head coach. Best Christmas gift we could've asked for.

Here are a couple.

"YSU is NOT an elite FCS program any longer. They are not even an elite team in the MVFC. Hopefully that will change with Pelini as HC, but there is no guarantee. And, after 9 years in the NFL, then 12 years at Nebraska, LSU and Oklahoma, this is going to be a HUGE drop in terms of facilities, budget, the way the team travels, size of crowds at games, quantity of equipment and many, many other things. Call me negative, call me a hater, call me what you wish. Just pointing out facts, and pointing out simply hiring Bo Pelini does not make YSU the favorite to win the MVFC next year, let alone the NC, yet alot of people will be expecting that level of success."

Nobody here is saying that YSU is elite on the FCS level or the MVFC. The goal is to become elite again.  His 2 predecessors couldn't do it.  Give him his chance.

If he does become wildly successful at YSU and then leaves, you'll probably b**** about that as well.

And yes, I'm calling you out for burying the guy before he even steps into Ohio again.
