YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Time for Pat Angle to play

Angle should have started the second half.  That would have sent a message to Hess to make better decisons.

The last few weeks have been horrific. We have only ourselves to blame.  The league has caught up to our offense.  We need to put some new wrinkles to keep the defenses guessing.  Is Hess hurt? Our O line has been pathetic especially in the send half.  On D it seems that they are afraid to TRUST their instincts.  There a few times they could have jumped a few routes but just made the tackle instead.  I think they are afraid to make mistakes because of the philosphy of the coaching staff, that nobodys job is safe. No fans, Youngstown should be ashamed of themselves this is a hardnosed blue collar area and a little wind and clouds kept everybody away...unbelievable.

We are 4-2, and people are wishing us not to make the playoffs, wishing for the old regime that couldnt ever win a big game other than in 2006...thank u Mr. Mason.  Seriously, the potential is there. we need some serious Senior leadership and a gut check from the coaching staff.

The last 2 games have been very surreal.  We beat Pitt, Northern Iowa.  Then we went to a bye week, and we look clueless? thoughts

Waited 24 hrs to post about the game.  After reading some of what everybody said...I am as disappointed at ur fans as i am about the team.

1. Wolford came here to upgrade the program.  Yea there were good players here and yea there were players that wasnt so good. Would we have BEAT PITT with the old coach.   Hell NO!!!!.  He treated those games as a lay down.

2. So if we go on iaa assumption that this team was doing just fine,,,did the past coach beat Northern Iowa? Did the past coach coach up his players? So i say sour grapes to anybody that seems to think this proram was in good hands 4 years ago...it wasnt.

3.  We all new our D was the problem and I want to think we need to give the New D coach a little more time, he didnt recruit those kids and if we dont see improvement, they will have to go get the righ kid.

4. We got beat by a great team.  They beat us up physically for 4 qtrs and they had tremendous depth.

5.  They had this game on there mind since we beat them and then the schedule gave them a big favor by having us come back there back to back years.

We are still light years ahead of where we were 4 years ago.  I think this is a playoff team its a long season and everbody needs to believe these guys can and will get to the playoffs!

I agree about #8, it was probably his best game yet.

I watched the replay and I couldn't tell because of the camera but when we got the INT it looked like we were in man coverage.  Could anyone tell?
If that was his best game, he has a long way to go!

Last play that Northern ran, they got called for an illegal pick. Watched replay and i thought the play was clean as well.

Good game! We won the fourth quarter in tight games good teams do that.  Our secondary and coverage on crossing patterns are still suspect.  #8 was horrible for three quarters and he made up for it in the 4th. He is still the weakest link on the defense and he will be tested.  IMO he is a nickel back playing safety. Northern Iowa will be a force next year they are very young...We didnt blitz much and there frosh QB picked us apart .
Hess is a stud.  Best i have ever seen and that one fourth down play was a thing of beauty.  We have a good team but our pass D will be the achilles heal.   Even so we are a playoff team,  With that we have a shot for a fifth ring.  Wolford was worth the money last night Go YSU!!!

Far as I am concerned this is THE game out of the first 4.  My gut is that Northern Iowa will make us throw, safetys will be in the box.  If there is a time for Hess to be on his A game on the medium to long pass routes, this will be the game.  Those routes will be there all game.  I will expect them to go after the secondary often, they will take shots at the back end of the secondary, our deep coverage is very suspect and the play action seems to hurt us as well.  Our front seven on D will be the key, I think our depth there will show.  We have depth and it shows in the 4th quarter this year as we have dominated that qtr. On O, look for them to stuff the run, this is where Stubbs, and Shaw are big, they are our game changers and can make big plays. I like them to use Pace as a change of Pace as well. If we can get him some touches early, that will keep Cooksie fresh...have to be a homer here...YSU 30-NI 28....

Gameday in the stadium sucks.  We need to change up the music..etc..the crowd needs to step it up some.  they cheer louder for the free plastic footballs...When I was at Pitt, it felt like a College game in the stands...

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Post Game Albany thoughts

Albany is a very good team. Well coached. They came out and knew exactly how to attack us and did it. Our secondary has improved, but it's still our big weakness. If anybody doesn't see that, you haven't been watching the games. Down the seams were getting killed. Safeties are slow to make their reads. It's been happening all season. Pitt missed a couple deep chances where we gt burned, even Valpo missed a couple chances. First play of the 4th qtr yesterday is more proof. Right down the seam and the kid dropped it. That needs to be fixed

Agreed!

I agree that Albany came to play.  They came very prepared.  We weren't going to show our hand before Northern Iowa . One thing we have forgotten we were a bad 4 quarter team we have shown otherwise so far this year by closing out the game with good possessions for td's.

All I want to say is the visiting coach said that they game planned to get certain mismatches.  It was very obvious they wanted to go after #8

Our one Safety from Mooney was out of position alot, He looked lost and wasnt making his reads very fast...he was yds away when the TE fell...he is our achilles heel and a better prepared team will take advantage.
