Was it taken down because it asked provocative and honest questions?

Does this forum censor appropriate content re: YSU athletics?

Is only cheerleading allowed?

I was looking forward to a good discussion after seeing it.  Very disappointing.

A movie should be made about this season. Go Penguins!

Horizon League Scoreboard (May 23)
(3) Valparaiso 1, (2) UIC 0
(1) Wright State 7, (3) Valparaiso 0
(6) Youngstown State 11, (4) Milwaukee 5

Schedule for Saturday, May 24
11 a.m. - Game 9 - (4) Milwaukee vs. (1) Wright State
3 p.m. - Game 10 - Winner of Game 9 vs. (6) Youngstown State

(6) Youngstown State 11, (4) Milwaukee 5
For the second consecutive night, Youngstown State jumped out to an early lead as the Penguins knocked Milwaukee to the loser’s bracket with a 11-5 win on Friday night.

The Penguins jumped out to a 5-0 lead over top-seed Wright State after three innings on Thursday night. Tonight, YSU scored one in the first and then exploded for seven runs in the second inning to take an 8-0 lead before Milwaukee even had a chance to bad for the second time in the game.

Phil Lipari led things off in the first inning with a single and scored when Matt Sullivan singled to the short stop.

In the second inning, some timely hitting and costly errors by Milwaukee helped YSU break the game open.  In the top half of the frame, YSU had five hits and two walks, while Milwaukee committed two errors, a balk and had a wild pitch to lead to seven Penguin runs (only two earned).

For the game, seven different Penguins had a hit and eight players recorded at least one RBI. Lipari led the effort with a 3-for-6 effort and is now 8-for-16 in the tournament. Sullivan went 3-for-4 at the plate in the game with two RBIs.

Patrick O’Brien picked up the win for the Penguins. Staked to a 9-0 lead, O’Brien threw 73% of his 94 pitches for strikes which led to 10 Panther hits, but UWM was never able to string together enough hits to threaten YSU.

(3) Valparaiso 1, (2) UIC 0
It was a pitching duel in the first game of the Horizon League Baseball Championship on Friday as Valparaiso defeated second-seed UIC, 1-0.
The Flames were eliminated from the tournament and end their season with a 24-27 record.

A day after Dalton Lundeen heaved 8.2 innings of shutout ball, Ellis Foreman threw eight innings of shutout ball to help Valparaiso avoid elimination for the second straight game.

Foreman struck out five, walked one and allowed four hits total. Karch Kowalczyk came on in the ninth, and  after a throwing error allowed the leadoff hitter get aboard, retired the final three batters to record his 11th save of the day.

The Crusaders got their lone run of the game in the fourth inning. After a popup, Kowalczyk singled down the left field line and advanced to third on a single by Andrew Bynum. Andy Burns recorded the second out with a sacrifice to move Bynum up to second base. With two outs, Jake Hanson singled to center field to score Kowalczyk to give Valpo the only run it would need.

Hanson paced the Valpo offense with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, while Bynum went 2-for-4. All nine of Valpo’s hits were singles.

UIC managed to get a runner into scoring position in the seventh, eighth and ninth inning, but were never able to capitalize.

UIC Sophomore Ian Lewandowski went the distance for the Flames, allowing one earned run on nine hits, while walking one and striking out one.

(1) Wright State 7, (3) Valparaiso 0
Two hours after shutting out UIC to stay alive, Valparaiso saw the other side versus Wright State as the Raiders’ Robby Sexton pitched a complete game shutout to eliminate the Crusaders.

Sexton went all nine innings, striking out four, walking one and allowing seven hits to secure his League-best eighth win of the season.

A day after only managing one run, Wright State doubled that effort in the first inning Friday as the Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Crusaders after an inning. After an opening ground out, the next three Raiders reached base to load the bases with one out. Sean Murphy brought the first Raiders run of the game in on a fielders choice and Brad Macciocchi secured WSU’s second run when his hot shot to third base was too tough to handle and all runners were safe.

The Raiders’ added their third run of the game when second baseman Michael Timm executed a perfect suicide squeeze to score Joe Ford.

Wright State broke open the game with a four-spot in the sixth inning to take a 7-0 lead. A throwing error on the first batter of the inning helped setup the Raiders for the big inning as the next three Wright State batters all singled. A double play momentarily stopped Wright State’s momentum, but Murphy hit a two-our, two-run single to score WSU’s final runs of the game.

The Raiders spread out their 10 hits as eight different players recorded at least one hit. Limbaugh and Jason DeFevers were the only Raiders to record multiple hits. Murphy had a team-high three RBIs.

YSU Penguin Athletics / 2014 MVFC Predictions
« on: May 07, 2014, 11:54:09 AM »
I was looking at a thread on AGS and some hard core Valley fans are not putting a lot of faith in the prospects of the upcoming season for the Penguins.  The most optimistic projections had YSU just below UNI, SDSU and NDSU.  The consensus, however, was a 5-7/10 place finish.

It is still very early, but the concerns regarding YSU's defense and uncertainty at QB make these predictions seem legit.  YSU FB under the Wolf seems to peak early in the season, and the Illinois game will be a bellwether game.  A loss likely means another 4 (or 5) loss season and no post-season.  A win likely means YSU will be competitive with the top of the MVFC (especially with NDSU who has lost their HC and many players to graduation) and will have a reasonable chance at the post-season (although no guarantees as the Pitt win did not lead to a playoff selection).

If I had to call it now....I'd put YSU in 5th with UNI, the -DSUs, and ISUr in the top 4.

Penguins Win 4-3 Thriller As Sadovnikova Picks Up Deciding Point

Ann Arbor, Mich. - Youngstown State senior Margarita Sadovnikova scored the final eight points of her singles match to lift the Penguins to a thrilling 4-3 win over Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon at the Michigan Varsity Tennis Center in the Horizon League semifinals.

The Penguins advance to the Horizon League Championship match on Sunday morning at 11 o'clock agianst Cleveland State.

YSU (13-11) led the match 3-1 after winning the doubles point and singles victories by Dominicka Lackova and Marta Burak. But the Panthers tied the match up with wins at No. 4 and No. 5. At the time, Sadovnikova had lost the first set and was tied 5-all in the second.

Sadovnikova held serve to take a 6-5 lead over Diana Tokar and evened the match at a set apiece when she broke serve a point later.

In the third set, it was all the senior who cruised to a 6-0 win over the freshman. Tokar had defeated Sadovnikova in Boardman earlier this season in straight sets.

The Penguins took the lead by taking the doubles point and needed just three singles wins to make the Horizon League Championship match for the second consecutive year.

After Carolyn Jesko lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 to give the Panthers (13-9) their first point of the match, Lackova won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 and Burak quickly followed up that victory with a 6-3, 6-1 decision.

However, the Panthers beat Annina Brendel 6-3 and 6-4 at No. 4 and Nehel Sahni could not hang on after winning the first set 6-1 before dropping the next two 6-2 and 6-3.

As those matches ended, Sadovnikova was down a set and tied at five with Tokar in the second set. From that point it was all Sadovnikova who helped advance the Guins to the finals with a strong final surge.

YSU Penguin Athletics / 2014 FB Schedule
« on: January 29, 2014, 03:08:55 PM »
Today's Vindicator released an article re: the 2014 FB schedule.  Knowing that an 8-4 record will unlikely result in a post-season invite, it seems that significant off-season improvements are necessary, as this schedule is more challenging than the 2013 schedule.

Instead of playing the -DSU's at home (where we lost both), we are playing them in far away lands in front of inhospitable crowds.  If we fall to those teams again, and Illinois, than we must otherwise run the table.

The Illinois game, who SIU lost only by 8 last season, will be a bellwether game, and is a must win to avoid the necessity of running the table against non-DSU schools.  This is a tall order for a HC in a do-or-die season.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Should YSU be an FCS independent?
« on: November 14, 2013, 09:11:20 PM »
The MVFC is the SEC of the FCS, and if YSU is to be in an FCS conference, than that seems to be the right choice.  However, does membership in such a dominant conference translate into higher rankings due to higher SOS?  I would argue no, as YSU drops to 15th in the Coach's Poll after only one MVFC loss and a loss to Big Ten power Michigan State.  Fordham slips by Patriot teams repeatedly and is ranked 5th.  Does MVFC membership translate into favorable consideration by the playoff selection committee?  I think the record since Tressel left would suggest not.

So why then, is YSU incurring huge travel expenses flying to remote locations that few fans care about, and of which we derive little, if any benefit?

What if YSU once again became an FCS independent?  What if we scheduled local FBS teams that would renew old rivalries, such as Akron and Kent State, particularly since the Big 10 is phasing out FCS money games?  There is much discussion about joining the MAC.  We could schedule 2 MAC teams a year, and at least have a MAC connection.  How much would that save in travel expenses?

YSU could still schedule MVFC teams, or CAA teams, or Big Sky teams.  Personally, I would enjoy seeing YSU rekindle the Delaware rivalry, or have another throw down with JMU. I think the lowly attendance figures would improve with opponents that YSU fans get hyped about, especially if we start clobbering 'em again.

YSU Penguin Athletics / 49ers at YSU
« on: September 20, 2011, 08:09:39 PM »
Any word on how this will impact YSU's practice schedule?    ???  How big of a check are the 49er's cutting the University?   ::)  Hopefully some pictures will be posted from these practices.   :o

Associated Press

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

Jim Harbaugh showed up for work Monday with the same black sweater, khaki pants and San Francisco 49ers cap that he wore on the sidelines the day before and has suited up in for almost every practice and team meeting this season.

The wardrobe might be the only thing he doesn’t want to change.

Harbaugh said Monday he is “trying to forge an identity” with the 49ers and it will take time to turn things around, even making a comparison to the nation’s debt challenge. After blowing a two-touchdown lead in a 27-24 overtime loss to an injured Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, San Francisco certainly has some work to do.

Things will only get tougher when the 49ers play the first of two straight East Coast road games, Cincinnati (1-1) on Sunday and Philadelphia the following week. They will stay and practice in Youngstown, between games.

“I think we’re in the process of finding our identity and having it click on all cylinders,” Harbaugh said Monday. “We’re going to stick to our guns in a lot of ways. Disappointed like all fans, all players, all coaches, everybody involved. Disappointed but not discouraged. I feel we’re on track.”

For a coach known for his offensive ingenuity, Harbaugh’s offense has shown little imagination.

The 49ers (1-1) rank 31st in total offense through two games and have tried to flex their muscles on rare occasions. The only team that ranks worse is Seattle — which happens to be the team San Francisco beat in the opener — and also plays in the NFC West, by far the league’s worst division last season.

Even worse, the same problems that led to Mike Singletary getting fired started to resurface.

The offensive line created more holes for the defense than anything else. Alex Smith threw a costly second-half interception and was sacked six times against Dallas, and two-time Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore has run for 106 yards and a touchdown on 42 carries through two games.

None of which is the identity Harbaugh wants to bring.

“We want to be a running team. We want to be a throwing team. We want to be darn-near 50-50 and equally good in both,” Harbaugh said. “We are in a process. I know everybody wants to solve the debt today.”

Michael Crabtree is still nursing a troublesome left foot and fellow receiver Braylon Edwards injured his right knee on a 21-yard catch in the first quarter. Edwards was scheduled to have an MRI on Monday.
