YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU @ ISUb 11/20 1:05 pm
« on: November 18, 2015, 07:33:27 PM »
Reviewing MVFC stats, ISUb generally falls in the middle of the pack in most categories.  An exception is that ISUb is the most penalized MVFC team, average over 70 yards lost in penalties/game.  Also, ISUb has the most sacks against, average 3.9 sacks/game.

ISU b (2-5/4-6) beat SIU 39-36, who we lost to in OT.

From YSUsports.com:

"YSU has won 20 of the 24 all-time meetings in the series, but the Sycamores have won three of the last five meetings, including a 27-24 overtime win at Stambaugh Stadium in 2014. At Memorial Stadium in Terre Haute, YSU is 11-1 with the lone loss coming in 2011 (30-24). The Guins won the last time the two teams played in Terre Haute, 35-24, battling through two lightning delays. Ten of the 24 meetings have been decided by a touchdown or less."

Massey:  YSU with a 66% chance of victory with a predicted score of 34-28.

5dimes:  YSU -6  O/U:   55

From gosycamores.com

"Sophomore QB Matt Adam took the reigns of ISU’s starting job minutes before the season opener vs. Butler on Sept. 5, and hasn’t looked back. His 2,055 yard season this year is already the sixth-best passing season in Sycamore history."

"Senior WR Gary Owens and junior WR Robert Tonyan Jr. put up another impressive performance against Western Illinois on Saturday, combining for 13 receptions for 147 yards. On the year, the duo has combined for 75 receptions, 1,130 yards and 14 TDs and during their two years together as receivers at ISU they have combined for 198 catches for 2,692 yards and 23 scores. Both have tied the single-game receiving touchdown record of three scores in a game this season, and both are encroaching on the single-season season (eight) and all-time career (15) touchdown records."

"Following a season in which ISU made the SportsCenter Top-10 for its “Circle of Death” trick play, Indiana State has scored on four different trick plays this season."

"Youngstown State comes to Terre Haute this weekend on the cusp of a potential bid to the FCS Playoffs   :) at 5-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play."

YSU Penguin Athletics / Missouri State at YSU 11/07 2 pm
« on: November 04, 2015, 01:09:15 AM »
Last season, Missouri State won one MVFC game and was within one score of three others, one of which was YSU. MSU was 3-1 going into the YSU game and lost 14-7.

This season, the sole win is over a D2 program, and MSU is 1-7/0-5, and 0-4 on the road. So far two teams have scored 70 points on them, and one 60 points.  in the MVFC, MSU is last in total defense (YSU is first) and last in total offense.  They are first in punt return average, and last in almost every other category.  In TOP, MSU is last, while YSU is first.

MO St's offense hasn't seen the end zone in 13 straight quarters, and have scored 12 points over the last 3 games combined.

This is the first season at Missouri State for their HC, Dave Steckel, who was previously the DC at Mizzou.

Massey gives YSU a 97% chance of victory and predicts a score of 41-13.  5dimes has YSU -28.

Massey ranks MSU 279 in D1.  As a point of reference, our earlier NEC foe STFU is ranked 200.

YSU leads the series 12-5.

The weather forecast for kickoff currently is 52 degrees, partly cloudy, 10 MPH winds, and ZERO chance of precipitation.

YSU holds a 14-11-1 advantage in the all-time series, and has won the last two contests in Carbondale, and four of the past five contests, inclidng a 26-14 win last season in Youngstown.

SIU (2-4/1-2) so far has crushed Misery State 73-26 and lost to Indiana 48-47 as they opted for a failed 2 point conversion rather than the tie in the final seconds of the game.  SIU had a school-record 517 yards total offense in the season opener at Indiana (2nd in MVFC history) and 471 yards total offense (10th in MVFC history) last week at Indiana State.  All four losses for SIU were by 3 points or less.

SIU leads the MVFC in: total offense, scoring offense (X = 41.7 points/game), passing offense, and rushing offense.

SIU QB Mark Iannotti leads all MVFC QBs in total offense.  Receiver Billy Reed is ranked in the top 5 in the MVFC in # receptions, and yards receiving.

YSU leads the MVFC in total defense as well as pass defense.

YSU is ranked 16th in both polls, and SIU is unranked.

Massey gives YSU a 47% chance of winning and predicts a score of 32-34.  SIU is favored by 2.5 by 5 dimes.

This is an absolute must win game for the Salukis, as they have to run the table to get 7 D1 wins, and still face NDSU, ISUr, and UNI.  This is also their Homecoming game.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Jacks @ YSU: Saturday 10/17 4 pm
« on: October 13, 2015, 12:53:35 PM »
The MVFC meat grinder continues Saturday as #7 (both polls) SDSU visits the Ice Castle and faces #12/#9 YSU for Homecoming weekend.  This will be the third nationally ranked opponent in a row for SDSU, and second for YSU.

SDSU (4-1/1-1) has had an impressive season so far beating Kansas, and last week ISUb 24-7.  In that win, SDSU was lead by freshman QB Taryn Christion (replacing  injured Zach Lujan) who passed for 221 yards and ran for 99 (was SDSU's leading rusher). That was the most rushing yards by an SDSU quarterback since 2006. He was 15-for-24 passing and carried the ball 16 times. For that incredible performance, Christion named MVFC Newcomer of the Week.  As a team, the Jacks ran up 428 yards.

Jake Wieneke led SDSU receivers with five catches for 90 yards.  Jake Wieneke leads the MVFC in # of receptions as well as #yards.  As a team, SDSU leads the MVFC in passing offense.

SDSU ranks last in rushing offense in the MVFC.  SDSU ranks eighth in rushing defense.

The current spread is YSU favored by 3.  Massey basically calls it a draw, giving YSU a 49% chance of winning and predicts a SDSU victory of 28-27.

The Yotes joined the MVFC in 2012, and YSU has won all three meetings with USD (13-10 in 2012, 38-34 in 2013, and 28-17 in 2014).

Last year, entering the fourth quarter at the Castle, USD was leading 17-7 until YSU scored three touchdowns in the final quarter.  YSU dominated the stats (except only converted 1/10 third downs) and had 557 yards of total offense.

The Yotes are 2-1 this year with a a 34-0 loss to K State, and wins over two feeble opponents: 27-17 over UC Davis and 52-0 over nonscholly Drake.  The last conference win for the Yotes was @ UNI on 10/19/2013.

Last week versus Drake, RB Trevor Bouma ran for 118 yards and 3 TDs.  QB Ryan Saeger passed for 2 TDs, no INTs, and 157 yards.

Massey gives YSU a 63% chance of winning, and predicts a score of 26-21.

YSU Penguin Athletics / 4 pm Saturday at the Castle: YSU versus STFU
« on: September 15, 2015, 11:35:25 AM »
STFU (1-1) has a win over woeful Georgetown and a respectable loss @ Towson.  STFU and Towson were tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter before the Tigers eventually pulled away and won 35-21.  In the losing effort, STFU's Lorenzo Jerome returned a kickoff for a touchdown and Terell Smith caught two touchdown passes.

The STFU offense gained 197 yards on the day.  Junior quarterback Zack Drayer completed 16 of 25 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns.  Senior receiver Terell Smith caught eight passes for 102 yards and two scores.  His second straight 100-yard game.  Senior running back Khairi Dickson had 36 yards on 15 carries.

On the defensive side, senior linebacker Semo Sila led the unit with a career-high 14 tackles, doubling his previous career high of seven.  Sila also forced a fumble and broke up two passes.  Jerome (mentioned on special teams above) also had a big day on defense, totaling 11 tackles, including one for loss, and intercepting a pass in the fourth quarter.

This is the seventh meeting of these two schools, and YSU leads the series 6-0.  Last year, YSU won 52-23, and in 2011, YSU won 49-23.  Long before that, YSU has wins of 20-6 (1939), 27-6 (1951), 35-0 (1952) and 20-13 (1953).

Last year, the YSU offense totaled 567 total yards, including 351 yards rushing.  For STFU, Dickson had 152 yards rushing, although most are from one garbage time run.

Our only common opponent is RMU.  Last year STFU beat RMU 40-7.  In 2014, STFU was 5-6/3-3, and 2-4 in away games.  In the NEC in 2014, STFU finished 4/7 place (FWIW, RMU finished 7/7).

The weather forecast for game time is 80 degrees, partly cloudy, and only a 10% chance of rain.

RMU (0-1) lost last week at home to nonscholly PFL team Dayton.  Last season RMU went 1-10 with its sole win at home versus Central Connecticut State.

Common opponents:  RMU will play SDSU in Brookings on 09/26, and conference foe STFU in Loretta on 11/14.

Massey ranks RMU 107 out of 125 FCS teams (YSU is ranked 7th).  Massy gives RMU a 0% chance of beating YSU and predicts a score of 41-3.

NEC preseason polling has predicted a last place finish for RMU in the NEC.

According to Penguin radio show, RMU is in the second season of implementing a spread offense with a Freshman quarterback, Matthew Barr.  They were the least penalized team in the NEC last season.

The weather forecast is upper 60s, and possible thunderstorms.

YSU Penguin Athletics / NDSU to offer FCOA scholarships in all sports

YSU: No plans to follow suit in football

Associated Press

FARGO, N.D.

Football Championship Subdivision powerhouse North Dakota State said Thursday it will provide thousands of dollars in stipends to scholarship athletes in all 16 sports beginning next year, a move that could persuade other mid-majors to follow suit.

The plan to pay for the full cost of attending college originated with the most influential conferences at the Bowl Subdivision level, which approved the legislation in January after gaining autonomy from the NCAA. Athletic scholarships have historically covered tuition, fees, room, board and books.

NDSU officials say the additional cost will be up to $3,400 per full scholarship.

“This is not our student-athlete coming in and picking up a paycheck because they rushed for 200 yards or they threw a no-hitter or whatever it may be,” athletic director Matt Larsen said. “This is to cover the costs while they’re here as a student-athlete for North Dakota State.”

Youngstown State athletic director Ron Strollo said the Penguins “have no plans to offer COA above what has been mandated by the Horizon League.” In April, the Horizon League passed cost-of-attendance legislation for men’s and women’s basketball.

Larsen said the decision should allow his coaches to stay competitive on the recruiting trail, where they often go against larger schools to land a player. The Bison football team, which has won four straight FCS titles, has gone head-to-head with Wyoming, Minnesota and other FBS schools over several recruits.

“To say a student-athlete is going to choose North Dakota State over another school for $3,400, I don’t think that will be the case,” Larsen said. “But it allows us to be in the same realm as some of those schools that we recruit against.”

Some FCS schools have said they would offer stipends in some sports, but only one other mid-major, Liberty University, has announced it will give cost of attendance scholarships for all 20 of its sports. The Virginia school has also said it would like to play at the FBS level.

Larsen said the stipends are not a step toward FBS for NDSU. “This is really what’s best for North Dakota State,” he said.

Patty Viverito, commissioner of the Missouri Valley Football Conference that includes NDSU and last year’s FCS runner-up, Illinois State, said the school representatives at the league’s annual meeting “were not so inclined” to favor stipends in all sports.

She said the subject also came up recently during a meeting of FCS commissioners in Bristol, Connecticut.

“I think everyone else in the room was saying that they really thought that FCS was situated pretty well in terms of being different from FBS and that it was probably not in our best interest financially, across the board, to try to keep up with FBS in this regard,” Viverito said. “When a major competitor makes a different choice, that may cause people to rethink that.”

When will President Tressel leave YSU to run for statewide or Federal office? (not a joke)

Playing the defending National Champions of both the FCS and FBS in the same season would have made for a fun 2015 schedule.  At least we net $750K for our money game.  This would not have been a 43-0 shutout either, with a BIG HC leading a competitive team from the MVFC.

From cleveland.com:

Football dominates Youngstown State's athletic budget, even at the FCS level

http://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/index.ssf/2015/07/youngstown_state_-_draft.html

Two excerpts:

"The football travel bill of $390,186 was about as much as that for the seven other men's sports combined."

"Three-quarters of the ticket money was from football."

My two cents:  MVFC membership is costly with little/no ROI.  When the NCAA dust settles...and especially if MVFC teams continue to stay home while inferior teams get at-large playoff invites....this needs to be re-evaluated.

Also, fix MBB...lots of lost revenue there.

Anyone know why their home games are not at Stambaugh Stadium?

I saw a graphic of the field set-up at Eastwood Field and it looks ridiculous.  Only half of the field fits within the stands (obviously built for baseball).  The seats on the 50 yard line are at the distal edges of the stands (where the outfield would be) and are far from the actual field.

YSU Penguin Athletics / The future of FCS football

From CBS sports:

"The NCAA will hold a summit Aug. 4-5 to strategize about the future of Division I. Members of the board of directors and various committees will participate and are studying four areas: (1) The Division I amateur model, including key features of athletes' experience and the use of athletic resources; (2) How college sports should assist students, including academic achievement and appropriate time demands; (3) How college sports should help students prepare for life after college, including those who want to pursue professional careers and the Olympics; (4) How Division I should operate, including examining the current subdivision structure and the role of conferences."

Who knows what will happen, however it seems likely that there will be an acknowledgement that the FBS is really two subdivisions (P5, G5), and it would seem unusual to have then three D1 subdivisions (P5, G5, FCS).  Could the weaker G5 conferences (MAC, Sun Belt) be assigned to a subdivision that the MVFC is in?

It seems that such realignment could benefit YSU and the MVFC, as the MVFC has outgrown the FCS level.  Also, YSU has suffered the FCS playoff committee long enough.  Hopefully, these changes will lead to renewal of the regional rivalries with Akron, who is completely in over their head in the G5.

Almost any outcome from the August meetings will be a positive change for the YSU FB program.

Whatever tiny piece of me that wanted YSU to join the MAC and play in the FBS is now gone after reading about the money UA is hemorrhaging due to FB.  The University is actually buying tickets to avoid being kicked out of the FBS.

The article mentions YSU:

"Even Youngstown State University, which plays in the lower Football Championship Subdivision, reported drawing 84,669 fans for seven games — an average of 12,096."

http://www.ohio.com/news/local/university-of-akron-football-attendance-lowest-in-nation-1.603992

How long can they sustain these losses? I don't see how they can add FCOA schollies to an already unaffordable program.  I wonder what the future is for their program, and for Terry Bowden.  Maybe drop to FCS?  They should swallow their undeserved pride and get YSU on their schedule ASAP to improve attendance, which it would do.
