It is now official.  Congratulations to Coach Boldon and Brandi on two well-deserved honors.  I just hope that Brandi can play Wednesday evening.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Women win again!
« on: January 04, 2013, 10:38:09 PM »
Did anyone watch this game on the VCU feed?  Women beat VCU with a dominating second half performance.  28 points and 10 boards from Brandi Brown.  We played without our second best player, Schlegel, who missed the trip with the flu.  Our point guard missed much of the second half with foul trouble. Our only other big girl (big is a relative term on this team) besides Brown got hurt and left the game with 11:00 minutes left.  We played the last ten minutes with small guards guarding six footers inside.  And we won going away.  Faced with the same type of handicaps, Slocum and the men would have lost by 25.

YSU Penguin Athletics / FCS Final Four
« on: December 14, 2012, 01:09:21 PM »
Does anybody care about this?  I am so disgusted and pessimistic about our future that I will have a hard time watching much of this.  Anyway, you have three teams with prolific, at times overpowering offenses along with one team with a rather pedestrian offense that won't scare anyone (except, apparently, us.)  Can NDSU win again with that great defense but less than lethal offense?  Or do they just get overwhelmed by too much firepower?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Women smash Miami
« on: November 25, 2012, 04:52:03 PM »
Tied at halftime, the women blew out Miami for a 20 point win in Oxford this afternoon  Supposedly, Miami was favored to win one of the divisions in the MAC.  For the third time this season, we followed up a lackluster first half with a dynamic second session.  Can this guy coach or what?  We might have a good basketball team, although perhaps not the one that we had expected.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Women beat Pittsburgh
« on: November 09, 2012, 01:29:44 PM »
Excellent start for the women who rallied from a 12 point half-time deficit and defeated Pittsburgh, 64-50, this afternoon.  Now Pittsburgh does stink (no wins in the conference last season) but it is still the Big East.  Looks like Boldon might actually be able to dig out of the horrendous pit created by Hill and Martin.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Is there a "Breaking Point" for Ron Strollo?
« on: October 29, 2012, 12:59:48 PM »
My dislike for Ron Strollo is no secret.  That dislike is based upon an evaluation of his professional behavior.  It is not personal as I have never had any dealings with the man.  In fairness, he handles the finances well and has managed the construction of new facilities and the renovation of old facilities very well.  But just how much longer can we operate with a bad football program before the blame points to the top?

Strollo hand-picked Wolford.  No committee, no alumni or community input.  The decision was all on him.  Now that has blown up in his face.  We have the Watts, high-priced coaches, and a program that is no better than it was when Heacock was forced out (which all rational people understand was necessary.)

So that leads to my question.  Is there a breaking point?  Will there ever come a time when, despite how well-liked Strollo is by Cynthia Anderson and the trustees, the need for a successful football team with trump loyalty?  What do you think?

If you are searching for some hope, here it is.  We have lost to teams that are 5-1 and 6-1.  There are four good quarterbacks in this league, and we have already played against the other three.  Looking at the numbers, our remaining opponents don't score many points and have relatively unimpressive passing statistics.  These games should provide some relief to our beleaguered defense.  Here are the average scoring, passing yards, passing touchdowns, and interceptions for our remaining opponents.  Note how the touchdown to interception ratio ranges from average to very poor.

S.ILL  - 20.7 scoring/  184.9 passing yards/ 7 passing tds./  8 interceptions
SDSU - 22.0 scoring/  151.8 passing yards/ 5 passing tds./ 11 interceptions
SD     - 22.3 scoring/  180.5 passing yards/ 6 passing tds./  4 interceptions
W.ILL- 15.0 scoring/  125.7 passing yards/ 2 passing tds./  5 interceptions
Ind.St -24.2 scoring/  146.1 passing yards/ 7 passing tds./  5 interceptions

Of course, Southern Illinois, SDSU, and Indiana State play good defense.  But unless our run defense crumbles, these are favorable matchups.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Eric Wolford: The Third Year
« on: October 14, 2012, 09:14:20 AM »
So we are in the middle of Eric Wolford's third season, and what do we see?  A head coach who can not respond to his counterpart's half-time adjustments.  A head coach who ignores special teams.  A head coach who has assembled a well-paid but weak staff.  Some of the position coaches are completely ineffective.  A head coach who brags about his national recruiting yet most of his acquisitions could not have played here twenty years ago.  In fact, NONE of his defensive players could have started on Tressel's championship teams.  So how would you describe Eric Wolford?  This morning two words jump out at me: "failure" and "incompetent."  Thanks coach.  In the span of three short weeks, you have once again made YSU football irrelevant in our community.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Basketball ticket "slight-of-hand" trick
« on: October 08, 2012, 12:41:16 PM »
As if Saturday were not going badly enough, I found my basketball season ticket packet in my mailbox.  The letter urging people to renew was there, complete with the prices and the statement that there will be 14 home games.  The renewal form was there.  Absent was any schedule and thus information about those three ooc garbage home games in December.  So our esteemed athletic department has developed this strategy: have uninformed fans hand in their money before they become aware that 21% of the product that they are buying consists of complete junk.  Classy plan.  Guaranteed to promote good will.

YSU Penguin Athletics / The long term significance of the Pitt victory
« on: September 03, 2012, 11:10:18 PM »
Well, we have now celebrated for two days.  Time to reflect on the significance of this win for the future of the program.  What are your thoughts?  I'll start with the most obvious.  Historically, we have done a really poor job of recruiting in western Pennsylvania, despite the fact that the region across the border is devoid of full scholarship IAA teams.  Even Tressel snagged only a few impact players there.  I cringed at our performances against Pitt in 2005 and 2009 precisely for this reason. Wolford had already started to address this deficiency.  Now this impact win has suddenly changed the landscape and has sent our stock soaring among very good Pennsylvanian football players that can't quite secure an offer from Penn State, Pitt, or West Virginia.  In the long run, that might be just as important as the 400k.

YSU Penguin Athletics / 2012 Football TV Schedule
« on: July 30, 2012, 07:23:01 PM »
The MVFC web site (www.valley-football.org) has just listed the tv schedule for conference teams.  Look under the category MULTIMEDIA.  The good news is that all five of our road games will be available via internet.  ESPN3 will show the games at Pittsburgh, SDSU, and Western Illinois.  MVFC TV, obviously an in-house production, will do the games at NDSU and Illinois State.  Here is the bad news.  I expect WFMJ will pick up the NDSU and Illinois State games from the conference, but ESPN in the past has refused to allow  local stations to tap into their ESPN3 webcasts.  So expect to fork over money to see those.  Of course, if you have AT&T DSL, ESPN3 comes to you free.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Congratulations to the women's track team
« on: May 06, 2012, 08:30:34 PM »
Beat Milwaukee decisively in Wisconsin, 172-129.  Numerous individual winners over the two-day span.  Men finished as the runner-up behind Milwaukee.  Weren't even competitive. (175-108.)

I think this marks the first time in about three years that a YSU team has won a Horizon League title in any sport.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Cleveland State game
« on: January 27, 2012, 10:26:42 AM »
No specific thread about this game yet?  Ok, signing day is next week, but let's at least pretend that we care about basketball.

I expect that the officials will go a long way in determining the outcome of this game.  Cleveland State plays the best pressuring defense in the Horizon League.  Their success results from two things: very good athletes and illegal contact on nearly every possession.  If the officials allow hand-checking, holding and bumping away from the ball, we are in serious trouble.  If they enforce the rules properly, our team, with the best ball-handling skills in the conference, should be able to neutralize their pressure.

YSU Penguin Athletics / 2012: Is This the Year, Finally?
« on: January 03, 2012, 01:45:00 PM »
Go back in time two years to January 2010.  Consider the fate of our three major sports.  We had just changed football coaches, and all we had was promises for a return to national stature.  Men's basketball was very poor and completely uncompetitive in the Horizon League.  On the women's side, we were in the last year of the Hill-Martin "Reign of Terror," and about to suffer the humiliation of a winless season.

Now return to the present day.  We will have defeated the probable national champion on the road, and the promised land is in sight IF the young defense improves, the special teams are reformed, and, most importantly, the coaches improve their game day performances.  Who knows what the rest of the basketball season holds for the men, but it is quite obvious that the laughingstock label can no longer be applied to us.  The biggest story of all comes on the women's side where Boldon in just one season plus has apparently changed the whole culture of the program.  Suggesting the we could become the second best team in the conference behind Green Bay in a few more seasons is now a sensible projection.

So will 2012 be the year that it finally, and mercifully, turns around?  Please give your analysis.

YSU Penguin Athletics / The sorrowful Wait Til Next Year thread!
« on: November 19, 2011, 05:32:12 PM »
This loss was the most devastating in the history of the program.

This loss was the most disgraceful in the history of the program.

This loss will cost the university about 3,000 potential season ticket holders who might have been gained had we made the playoffs.

This loss turns an off-season that should have been filled with optimism and anticipation into a period of anger and big doubts.
