When Barnes announced his resignation around the middle of January, the program had hit rock bottom. Now they are back to .500 in the league, likely to finish the regular season 9-11. During the second league rotation, Nicolais has defeated five teams that had beaten us the first time around, with three of those reversals coming on the road.

So what does Strollo do? Reward this improvement and allow Nicolais to preside over the complete rebuild that must come next season (7 incoming freshmen?) Or does Stollo assume that Nicolais shares with Barnes responsibility for the lack of talent on the current team and show him the door?

YSU Penguin Athletics / The Separation of the P4 from everybody else
« on: December 06, 2023, 11:09:06 AM »
We are naturally focused on the portal, but another big story broke yesterday. The new NCAA president is proposing a new tier within D1 for the big time powers. They would pay at least half of their scholarship athletes a MINIMUM of 30k per year. It is estimated that it would cost high revenue schools about 6 million additionally each year.

Should this proposal pass, it would effectively push all G5 schools out of the top tier. Many of us have been amazed for decades that conferences like the MAC would overspend millions on sports just for the "prestige" of being, technically, in the same division as Ohio State. Why would MAC presidents continue to overspend if booted out of the top tier? For Tuesday night football games? For access to some stupid bowl that their alumni don't care about? For a one bid basketball conference, just like the Horizon League? If this becomes NCAA policy, the possibility of an FCS MAC Ohio-driven conference, our fantasy for decades, might just happen.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Basketball Attendance
« on: February 20, 2023, 07:40:32 PM »
John Vargo, the former sportswriter and now our ace promotional director (take that any way you like,) retweeted information about mid-major home basketball average attendance in northeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. I checked the figures on the MAC site and updated the YSU attendance to reflect last weekend.  It looks like this:

2815 YSU
1935 Akron
1859 KSU
1770 CSU

I found this to be stunning, considering that Akron and Kent have been consistently good for decades. It signifies two things: the enormous negative impact of ESPN+ on game attendance. And the fact that the fan bases in Akron and Kent are absolutely pathetic. For all our complaining, you can see that YSU fans remain the best in our little corner of the world.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Early Football Signings
« on: December 21, 2022, 02:35:31 PM »
Phillips's early recruits are now posted on the university athletic site. Anybody have insight? Three star running back from Alliance and winner of best high school receiver award in West Virginia caught my attention.

We rarely play any DI teams in football or basketball with "name recognition" that casual fans might want to see. So scheduling Ohio University at home is great. But let us screw this up by playing on Sunday afternoon at precisely the time when the Browns are playing the Bengals and the Steelers are playing the Ravens.  Fortunately, both football teams stink, but 95% of casual fans will opt to watch one of those football games instead of coming to the campus.

I assumed that Ohio demanded this.  Perhaps they were in action on Thursday and did not want to play a road game on Saturday two days later.  Nope. This is finals week at OU and their basketball team has not played since last Saturday. Furthermore, they are playing at Florida next Wednesday so this Saturday would have worked even better for them.

We could have scheduled an attractive doubleheader for this Saturday evening.  But no, why do something that might promote the programs. I eagerly await some rational explanation for this monumental stupidity.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Still Relevant in November
« on: November 01, 2022, 11:58:37 AM »
For the first time in six years, we are playing football games that mean something down the stretch. The team that we witnessed on Saturday is capable of winning out. But the big question....the only question....is this: can we take that confidence and intensity on the road?  Carbondale in 2021 or Macomb in 2022?

YSU Penguin Athletics / MVFC 2023 and 2024 Schedules
« on: August 15, 2022, 01:08:30 PM »
League schedules for the next two seasons are now posted on the YSU athletics main page. As expected, the league stayed with an eight game schedule.  In the next rotation we are missing Western Illinois, North Dakota, and North Dakota State.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Women's BB news

We picked up a guard in the transfer portal. Played with Paige Shy in high school.  Hopefully can help fill the large gap left by graduation of Olson.

Also, IUPUI coach moved on to Butler. I expect that he will take the few remaining good players at IUPUI with him. On paper for next year, barring more disturbances in the transfer portal, Green Bay and YSU are the frontrunners.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Horizon League Awards
« on: February 28, 2022, 03:03:33 PM »
The Horizon League announced their selections this afternoon.  Looks about right to me.

For the men, Akuchie is second team, Cohill is third.

For the women, Ritz is first team, Olson is second

Ritz and Aulbach are on the all-defensive team

John Barnes is Coach of the Year

YSU Penguin Athletics / Women score critical win at CSU
« on: February 12, 2022, 12:12:46 AM »
Very important win in overtime. Good defense after giving up 26 points in the first quarter (gulp!)  We hit 15 threes for the game, including a trio in a row in overtime, as the dumb CSU coach tried to play us with a zone for most of the evening.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Barnes Reaches 300 win plateau
« on: January 22, 2022, 11:01:27 PM »
It should be noted that John Barnes won his 300th game this afternoon, 144 of them at YSU.  We now stand at 17-2, 11-1 in the league. (don't get me started on the disaster of last week's IUPUI final minute.)

The second half of the league schedule will be tough. Six of the final eight on the road, including contests in inhospitable venues like Milwaukee, Green Bay, CSU, and IUPUI.  But when you play tough defense on virtually every possession, you always have a chance.

24 new players. Most are freshmen with a few jucos. 4 o-line and 4 d-line. 2 qbs, 6'5" from Pittsburgh and Brungard's kid (didn't somebody say he was being recruited as a db?) Only one wr, the 6'6" kid from Elyria Catholic. Several Ohio kids played on teams that won state titles or made deep playoff runs.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Women win again
« on: December 02, 2021, 11:47:40 PM »
Playing without their leading scorer and rebounder (word circulating around Beeghly was Covid) the women clawed, scratched, and hustled their way to a 58-50 win over Milwaukee. The ugly win under the circumstances was perfectly acceptable.

YSU Penguin Athletics / The Schedule gets easier next season
« on: November 18, 2021, 05:21:46 PM »
Obviously, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, and North Dakota State destroyed us up front. Based on the schedules posted by the fans from Northern Iowa and South Dakota State, we do not play those two schools in 2022 and 2023.

Next year's home schedule was published in the basketball program:

Sept. 3    Duquesne
Sept. 10  Dayton
Oct. 8      North Dakota
Oct. 15    Indiana State
Oct. 29    South Dakota
Nov. 19   Southern Illinois

That means road games with North Dakota State, Missouri State, Illinois State, and Western Illinois, plus one money game (Kentucky?)
