YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Transfer Portal
« on: March 22, 2023, 01:15:51 PM »
I hope coach can get players from the portal that will be here for couple of years instead of one and done.
I hope a lot of power 5 bench players will join the mid majors by entering the portal to get more playing time.

Speaking on the question on whether coach C will stay after this year’s success, the FDU head coach just left to join Iona after just one year on the job. Of course, he took the team to the big dance and took down the one seat.

That whole dynamic with FDU is crazy.  If it weren't for the ridiculous rule that a school moving up to D1 can't be eligible for postseason, Merrimack would have made the tournament and Tobin Anderson wouldn't even have been considered for the Iona job.

Instead FDU gets a play in game and wins, then takes down Purdue, and nearly pulled off another upset to the Sweet 16.  It got the FDU program a ton of exposure.  I did not know FDU had the smallest team in college basketball and didn't realize he took a 4-win team to what he accomplished in one year.  As I mentioned before, ironically Brandon Rush was at FDU last year.

However, with that success now FDU is probably starting all over again.

The whole dynamic of your post is wrong.

Anderson was a finalist for the job when Pitino got it.  To say he wouldn't even be considered is probably the furthest from the truth.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: League Basketball Schedules
« on: November 13, 2020, 12:07:42 PM »
The league schedules for both the men and women are now posted on the YSU athletics site.  Once again the Horizon League did us no favors.  Both the men and women play the first two weekends on the road.  The league also determined that there will be no fans for league games played in December.  Attendance at non-conference games is up to the individual school.

But wouldn't playing games on the road when their is a guarantee of no fans in the crowd actually be to your favor?

I agree that playing a road game inside an empty gym is better, but the need to travel and the home team's familiarity with the environment probably are the biggest disadvantages.

Here is the thing that really makes me unhappy.  Look at our schedule. 8 out of the first 10 games are on the road. We could have a really good team, go 4-6, and be disillusioned before the second half of the season. And the league did that to us when, for the first time ever, we are a consensus contender.

Wick, I agree that's a brutal amount of travel and the way things are trending I have a feeling that no crowds at all during the season could be a realistic possibility.

I'm in my late 30's and remember going to games with my dad during the Storia years but my realistic earliest memories of YSU basketball is during the beginning of the Peters era with guys like Raber Jr. and Leroy King.

This is the type of season I've been waiting for and it's awful that A) I feel like I'm waiting for a foot to drop and wipe it out or B) I'm not going to get to see any games live.  Fingers crossed, keep masking up, and hope for the best.  Go Guins.

I just don't see the Penguins taking the field in 2020.  Not trying to be negative but I'm being a realist.

I'm afraid this is the first step of him getting his name out there as a grad transfer after this season.  Book it.

There is a nice article on the YSU site that covers the history of football. Unfortunately it was written by a Buckeye fan

Greg Gulas is a former SID at Youngstown State, where he played college baseball and was the head baseball coach for the Penguins for a few years to fill the void until they could find a new head coach.  He also does the official scoring at hoops games I believe. He is a member of the YSU Hall of Game and is a PROUD PENGUIN!!!

Here a few quick fixes I'd make.
Invest in 4 portable hoops systems you can use for practice and get rid of the hanging hoops from the ceiling.  Looks bush league.

Move all of the media to one side, push the benches down out so walkons will be behind the hoops on the sideline.  Make courtside seating on that side.

Read seats all around.  Get red hard plastic bleachers in the endzones.

Maybe take out out one of the endzone and put some glass and a few rows of seating in below it and have club seating like Kent does, or whatever the hell it is in the one endzone.

Stat boards with live time team stats behind the hoops.

Get rid of the wannabe LED bush league looking 32 inch TV's inside a score table that look horrible.  I don't know what they would half ass that.  If your not ready to do it right, then don't do it.

Ok, let's fund-raise.

Hoops,

Nothing new about our baseball program.  We have been DI in baseball and every other sport since our transition from D2 forty years ago.  Also, we have two NCAA tournament appearances in baseball.  The last, I think, in 2014.
Thanks Wick.  I know the new to D1 was not correct, and I thought the tournament appearances was incorrect also.  Thanks for setting the record straight.
The 1st tournament appearance I'm looking for is the NCAA Men's Basketball!  Probably not there just yet, but certainly headed in the right direction.  Only thing bad about making the Big Dance is it will probably cost us a coach.

sorry, I know this, but read the post above mine....I was talking about Abilene Christian and all the previous success they had was at the D2 level.

This program is fairly new to D1.  All previous baseball success was at the D2 level.  I don't believe they have any NCAA tournament appearances at the D1 level.  Not taking away from the series win though, sill a solid performance.

I was shocked when I saw that 2148 attendance figure.  The south bleachers were packed (thanks in part to the football team,) the red seats were much more thickly occupied than usual, and significant people in the east and west bleachers.  Definitely in the 3500 range.  Like most mid-majors, we lie to enhance attendance figures.  Why we would lie in the opposition direction, I have no idea.

Unless they only counted the paid customers.i don’t know if they kept tracked of the students who could get in by just showing their ID.

BINGO!!
Paid admission.

Lots of tickets throughout the season get donated to different businesses and such to hand out, and to schools for different types of programs.

As far as talent goes, no other teams other than NKU or Wright State may be better than us but it don't mean that we don't match up well with a few teams.  I'm dreading that we see a Detroit/Cleveland State type team on our home court in the tournament.

I just don't like how we match up with those two teams as far as physicality.

It's hard to win on the road in college hoops, period.  I was hoping for a split best case lucky scenario.  College hoops is about holding serve at home and getting a few breaks in winnable games on the road: The UIC types of the world.  We have two breaks already, Detroit is a possibility and so is a split on the Wisconsin trip maybe.

I truly think the physical strength of West Virginia wore down YSU and contributed to their victory.  We were able to hang with them making hustle plays, and some key shots in the first half but West Virginia fed off the crowds energy because it appeared maybe that their was more Mountaineer fans in attendance.

If this Penguins team treats every game of the conference season like they did, especially at Beeghly, no reason they can't secure a top-3 seed headed into the conference tournament.
