YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Transfer Portal
« on: March 21, 2023, 07:28:19 PM »
I hope coach can get players from the portal that will be here for couple of years instead of one and done.
I hope a lot of power 5 bench players will join the mid majors by entering the portal to get more playing time.

Speaking on the question on whether coach C will stay after this year’s success, the FDU head coach just left to join Iona after just one year on the job. Of course, he took the team to the big dance and took down the one seat.

That whole dynamic with FDU is crazy.  If it weren't for the ridiculous rule that a school moving up to D1 can't be eligible for postseason, Merrimack would have made the tournament and Tobin Anderson wouldn't even have been considered for the Iona job.

Instead FDU gets a play in game and wins, then takes down Purdue, and nearly pulled off another upset to the Sweet 16.  It got the FDU program a ton of exposure.  I did not know FDU had the smallest team in college basketball and didn't realize he took a 4-win team to what he accomplished in one year.  As I mentioned before, ironically Brandon Rush was at FDU last year.

However, with that success now FDU is probably starting all over again.

Look if we were not previously competitive without the the portal, just what makes you think we will be anymore competitive WITH the the portal going forward? It is not like we are the only team that makes use of it. If it was Calhoun (not the portal), then he should be just as successful without the portal. Portal is terrible.

I would say he was pretty successful without the portal with guys like DQ, Naz, Covington, and Akuchie and where the program was headed until COVID, injuries, and the portal started.

So you're basically saying it's a bad thing the mid majors are competitive in the tournament?  And that YSU nearly knocked off Oklahoma State

I'm not going to sit here and brag the portal up, but it is giving mid majors more of a chance

At first i thought it was bad for the game but now i see how a team can benefit from the portal as we did this past year.   I have no problem with teams and coaches taking advantage of the portal.  Any more from YSU plan on transferring out besides Dunn?

I agree with you.

He is from Michigan and was recruited by Ferris state and Hillsdale and I heard a rumor that Ashland was showing some interest.  Just opens up another spot for transfer portal.  Who will be next?

Sorry I started this topic before I saw you had already done one.

Will Dunn is the first YSU player to entered the transfer portal.  Not really surprised by this.  He was one I could see dropping down to D2 or D3.

His PT disappeared after the Detroit home game at the end of January, and I'm pretty sure that was the game Cohill yelled at him after a turnover.  He also played the most mins in that game at 19 than he did all season.  After that he only played in 6 of the final 11 games for a total of 13 mins and did not score.

He really improved from his freshman year to his sophomore year and even started 13 games last year.  I was hoping for more improvement this year.  He did hit 6 of his 13 3-point attempts this year.  He seemed to struggle on the defensive side this year and turned the ball over too much.

I agree on Rush. Ironically he camefrom Fairleigh Dickinson that won 4 games last year. Only way you'd think he'd transfer is if Coach left or he felt the team wasn't going to be a winner.

I'd be surprised if Lovelace left but you really don't know.

I could see Dunn possibly moving down to D2 or D3. YSU has lost a few to that in recent years. Have to wonder about Owens. At one point Coach said he was a work in progress.

Not sure what to think on Hunter & Shemar. Seemed like after he got snowed in in Toronto & didn't play hardly at all those next 2 games then the injury he lost all his playing time. He went from being a starter to like 9th or 10th.

Mudclods:

It was the last thing coach said on the radio interview. He could have meant nice working with you THIS SEASON, but I don't know.

I assumed that's what you meant after I listened to the post-game press conference, and maybe if you only had heard that sound bite, but just before that he sounded pretty committed to next year and said they'll get to work today.

You made it sound like because he has nothing coming back he's going to make an announcement today he's not returning.  The same could have been said last year and look at the transfers he brought in along with John Lovelace.

Robb Schmidt did say on the post-game Brandon Rush was coming back.

Says 4099.  The attendance numbers all year makes no sense.  That was easily the biggest crowd of the year.

YSU outplayed OSU, but ran out of steam the last 5 mins or so.  I was just hoping we could maintain the lead and not fall behind.  When some of those shots didn't fall late it became deflating, but YSU battled to the end.  YSU went close to 5 mins without a basket and that probably was the difference.

Their size wore YSU down and YSU had a lot of open 3's they couldn't knock down and a few layups didn't fall.

I just wish that long buzzer beater by OSU at the end of the first half didn't go in.   YSU should have been up 7 or 9 at halftime and it may have been a different story.  Adrian Nelson wasn't the same after he went down.  He was a force in the first half.

One note, on the post-game show Robb Schmidt said Brandon Rush will be back.

YSU definitely outplayed them the first half, too bad the lead is only 4. They drilled that long 3 at the buzzer & we had an easy basket had 2 of our players not crashed into each other. Had some chances to grab some rebounds & loose balls but they seemed to get several that were ours for the taking & they converted. YSU played good enough to be up 7 or 9.

Hopefully YSU can keep the intensity up in the 2nd half. Going to have to keep hitting 3's & grab some rebounds

This is a MUCH BIGGER deal for YSU then the schools you are referencing.  Most of those teams have been there before many times.  Not to mention alot of them had hopes of making the Big Dance. Also, some of them are probably on spring break.  Finally, we may never get another opponent of OK States caliber in Beeghly ever again.

With that said, how many tickets have been sold?

No reserve seats are available now.  There were some this morning

Washington St had only 1871 in an 11,000 seat arena

And Eastern Washington is only 60 miles away

Piss poor crowds so far by the hosting teams in the NIT.  Pack Beeghly tonight as we can set the standard for attendance.

I watched the Michigan/Toledo and Hofstra/Rutgers games and the home courts were packed.

5017 at Rutgers, 4521 at Michigan

Those were the only 2 upsets.  I thought Toledo might be able to beat Michigan or cover the 6.5 underdog, but they lost by 10 after being up 2 at halftime.  Michigan came out knocking down several 3s before Toledo scored in the 2nd half.

I wondered too if YSU has a shot at another home game if they can win.  YSU would have the better record. Before last night, YSU was 123 in the net and EW 128.

Coach Calhoun said in his press conference yesterday that YSU did put in a bid for a home game. So I'm not sure how that works for round 2.  Round 2 games are scheduled for Saturday & Sunday.

Looks like 2 of Oklahoma State's players are out for Wednesday.

OSU coach Mike Boynton also said Avery Anderson III is not as far along as they had hoped with his recovery from wrist surgery. Will be re-evaluated this week and will not play Wednesday at Youngstown State.

OSU guard Chris Harris Jr. suffered a torn ACL last week. His third on his left knee.

Anderson averages over 11 ppg; leads the team in assists, steals & FT %.

Harris wasn't a starter, but played in 32 of their 33 games.

Also, Coach Calhoun said Malek Green is a go for the game.

So that's all pretty big news
