YSU Penguin Athletics / Marcus Hooker

On campus yesterday and today.  Former Buckeye, brother Malik played at Ohio State now in NFL with Cowboys.  Has his degree from Ohio State.  Would be a game changer at safety for YSU.  Has had issues off the field, hopefully has his life on track.  Being from New Castle, maybe he wants to be close to home.

Agree with many of the comments above.   D-line looks like a strength.   I think we have capable back up running backs with Dra Rushton and Randy Smith, appears to be more depth and talent at wide receiver.   McLaughlin did not play, I think he and Crenshaw give us skill and talent to compete.  However, the O-line is an issue, just not very good.   Going to be hard to win in our conference without a good o-line.

I am hearing YSU in the CIT and will host a game next Wednesday.  Round 2 with a win on the road.  No opponent yet.

Agree on all underachievers.  Won't judge Calhoun's body of work until he leaves here.   But the HL was much stronger when Slocum was here, programs like Butler and Valparaiso were very good mid-majors.  Slocum was a lot like Pelini, a jerk.  But Pelini in a class of his own.

RMU is 4-13 on the road, two of those wins at YSU.  Number 2 is a beast for them, best player on the court.  Calhoun outcoached, their zone caused all kinds of issues.  Agree with Nick, at the D- level Beeghly is a dump.  I was at Curbstone Coaches lunch two weeks ago when President Tressel spoke.  He was asked about Beeghly, and even he said the seats beside him are falling apart and he has good seats.  But he didn't say he would do anything about it.

Calhoun and Dan peters two best coaches we have had in the past 30 years.  Our facilities are a joke compared to most of the teams in our conference.  Going to be nearly impossible to ever be among the top 1-2 in the league.  No tradition, no money, no creative marketing, etc.   Indiana consistently will never beat Ohio State and Michigan in football because of what I cited above.   YSU likely never going to be among the best in the Horizon League because of the same issues.  That is fact.  Slocum wasn't a bad coach, won big at Geneva and Gannon.  But YSU's issues are real.

Agree on the questionable hire.  Haneline played at Bowling Green, Phllips coached there, maybe he knew him from BG.   If Brown is the new D coordinator, he too played at BG.

Schaefer taking entry level defensive assistant at Texas A&M.  Boardman native DJ Durkin recently named their defensive coordinator.

Just heard from a good source that Joe Schaefer is leaving.   Coach Phillips was high on him and he came in with Phillips.

Goodnews said it all, so many excuses.  Generations of losing, doesn't seem to matter who the coach is.  Dan Peters had a small degree of success, couldn't sustain it and he knew it.  He left a D-1 head coaching position her to return as an assistant.

4000 fans, I'd sign up for that right now, I was thinking 2500 at best.  Lousy weather, and great noon college football games on TV as well.  You can't run against ND State, and our only offense is running the ball.  Blowout.

I am not a Crenshaw hater, but he has done nothing for me in the pass game.  Last week 75 yards passing.  Yes, he can run, then make him a running back.  QBs need to make plays in the passing game downfield.

Very small sample size with Davidson.  Yes, impressive, but the first TD pass was thrown up for grabs and should have been intercepted.  The last TD drive, SD ST had all their starters out.  Not being critical, but realistic.   I listened to Coach Phillips radio show on Monday and he hinted that Davidson will get more playing time, but he also led me to believe that Davidson is not a running QB at all and he prefers a QB who at least has a threat of running the ball.

Chief is 100% correct.  Phillips resume was very weak.  Only thing he could hang his hat on was that he worked at Iowa State and Cincinnati under 2 successful coaches.  But he role at both places was minimal.  Tressel needs to own some of this.  I am not a fan of Strollo, but this hire is on Tressel.

We have reached a very low point.  Losing to Western Illinois and Indiana State in the same season.  Would need a supreme effort to win any of the final four.  Looking at a 1-6 spring, 2-8 fall.  If we lose all 4, Coach Phillips 3-14 first two seasons is pathetic.  Pelini didn't leave the program in this bad of shape.

We are slow, small and lack athleticism other than McLaughlin.  On another note, why did he disappear the final part of the fourth quarter on Saturday?
