YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: 2015 MVFC Recruiting Rankings
« on: February 07, 2015, 07:40:01 PM »
For all the hype we heard from Mr. Scouting Expert about having top classes under Wolford, here is how those #1 and #2 recruiting classes panned out:

2010 - 9th out of 9 teams (they were freshmen and this was Wolford's first year, so we can throw this one out)
2011 - 3 way tie for 4th place - no playoffs
2012 - 2 way tie for 6th place - no playoffs
2013 - 4 way tie for 2nd place - no playoffs
2014 - 2 way tie for 5th place - no playoffs

Surely with back-to-back top recruiting classes in the league we should easily have made the playoffs, or hell, even won the league. As such a recruiting expert, the results over those final 4 years under Wolford speak volumes in terms of this individuals recruiting eye. It is half-ass to say the least.

Just thought I'd share what plenty on here are thinking. Now, Mr. Expert, please continue with your egotistical bloviating.

I talked with someone close to the coaching staff yesterday that informed me you will see more kids getting partial scholarships as opposed to full scholarships... Some of these "questionable" ones Pally and Mr. Fever are going off about are very likely partials.

FWIW, Massey has 9 of the 10 MVFC in its FCS Top 25. WIU is #26.

MSU an early 6 point edge over YSU per Massey, which has the Bears #3 right now in its computer rankings. Huge one at the renovated Plaster Complex next week. They are already promoting the game bigtime in Springfield, we should take notes, and they are hoping for their 2nd straight sell-out.

I will say this, St. Francis was not good competition, but besides Crockett at NDSU and Zenner at SDSU, we will not face a tougher RB this year. The experience against Dickson last night should help us in the rush defense department.

Well let's point the finger at the individual responsible for marketing and putting butts in the seats, that is Rick Love. http://www.ysusports.com/information/directory/Love_Rick

Let's cut straight to the chase. We have 13,000 students at YSU and he can't even get 10% of them to the football or basketball games. We play in a tremendous mid-major athletic conference in the Horizon League with top-level competition and regional rivals, yet his inability to get 2,000 at most games is getting quite pathetic. Furthermore, the promotions at these sporting events are laughable. Nobody is going to come for a keychain or water bottle or a stupid schedule magnet. So instead of having area businesses subsidize the purchase of those promotions, why not offer better ticket promotions, family discounts, high school tailgate days, military days, etc. Find a damn spot to light off fireworks in the middle of campus if you don't want the fireworks causing damage to the WATTS.

My favorite promotion playing right now is on Clear Channel and it is embarrassing. It goes something to the effect of, "There are 2 teams and 1 football and it belongs to us because it is a Youngstown state of mind." WTF does that even mean?!?!?!?!!?

It does not take a PhD to figure out how to market games. Go look at other schools, NDSU, UNI, JMU, and other schools social media accounts. They have top notch promo videos to get the community excited. They engage the community and get students excited. We don't!

We are a Division 1 school with a Division 3 athletic marketing dept.

Just my 2 cents...

YSU Penguin Athletics / MVFC - 1st FCS Conference with Replay Review
« on: April 11, 2014, 11:07:05 PM »
@FCS_Gameday: Missouri Valley reportedly moving to use replay in conference games in 2014. Formerly replay only used in FCS during playoffs. #FCS

This will be welcome inside the Ice Castle. We've seen our fair share of sketchy calls by these officials that could/should have been overturned.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: The Tressel Movement
« on: February 20, 2014, 10:24:55 PM »
It's really embarrassing to the region and institution that people would be rallying so hard around someone so unqualified for the job of university president.  Only in NE Ohio can people think a football coach is qualified to run an institution of higher learning.  Tressel's academic credentials barely make him qualified to be an adjunct teacher at the school, let alone president.  It's a joke.
Easy for someone living in Ivy League country to say. Do some research. YSU is not the only school to go outside the mold to hire a non-traditional President. Read this study: www.aascu.org/uploadedFiles/AASCU/Content/Root/MediaAndPublications/PublicPurposeMagazines/Issue/11summer_presidentpipeline.pdf

Our social media push continues to grow. The excitement we are seeing toward this university is very high right now. Keep pushing folks.

To conclude, Boston, numerous media reports cite Tressel as a candidate for Akron, a school double the size of YSU. He is learning a great deal as VP at Akron and he already has community relations, fundraising, and leadership qualities that are necessary for the job. If chosen, Tressel will surround himself with an A+ staff to ensure our academic standards remain high.

After winning their first five by nearly 13 ppg, they were bound to have one of these types of games sooner or later. They battled and battled and finally got over that hump and won by 9.

These girls are definite believers they can win this league.

Great win!

Establish our run game early, then setup the pass. Protect Hess like there is no tomorrow.

Strive to keep their rushing attack at bay.

We do have one individual in charge of marketing. I know some others have already posted about him.

http://www.ysusports.com/information/directory/Love_Rick

Email: rwlove@ysu.edu

Perhaps we should share our thoughts with him in regards to the lack of promotion for last weeks game on such platforms as social media. Sad that our twitter account had to post daily to get people fired up because they did nothing.

We have continuously been promoting this on our Twitter feed. If the powers to be aren't going to promote this on social media, then we as fans must!

Somebody's got to promote the game if the athletic department won't. Still the biggest game at YSU in a long time, even in the wake of last weekend.
It is absolutely appalling that the athletic marketing department has done NOTHING to promote this game besides giving veterans 4 free tickets and throwing Wolford out there in desperate fashion.

We at the LetsGoGuins twitter community plan to start tonight with other major twitter accounts to spread the word about this game. It was a GRASSROOTS effort that nearly landed us College Gameday, not the work of the athletic marketing department. It will take a GRASSROOTS effort to get people to this game because some don't seem to want to do their job, a job we as taxpayers PAY them to do.
