« on: November 16, 2015, 01:40:14 PM »
I'm still laughing ............................ I told all when Bo was hired that this would be a comedy. Game on the  line and Bo throws  one of his famous tantrums getting multiple penalties. You ain't seen nothing yet !  ;D

YSU Penguin Athletics / Losing season
« on: October 26, 2015, 02:09:06 PM »
Boy, I hate to admit it, but I was wrong..... WAY wrong in pre-season when I projected YSU to go 7-4. Its rare that I miss and the record here reflects  my picks over the years being right most of the time. This year, the team was loaded with talent and SUPPOSEDLY getting   a "great" coach. What could go wrong ? Right ?

I now view this season finishing with a losing record, 5-6 and may be worse. QB problems ( as I predicted), a D that isn't as good as advertised, injuries on the OL and coaching "questionable".  The league remains a meat grinder and YSU is lucky they played the   weenies early. It could have gotten real ugly. May yet still.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Butler game
« on: September 07, 2014, 10:03:57 PM »
Non-scholly Butler is this weeks game. The Bulldogs are picked to finish 4th in the Pioneer League, a league they were C0-Champs   of last year. The year before YSU destroyed them as they also won the PL that year too.. They struggled to beat D-III Wittenberg 22-16, trailing 3-2 into the second half. They avoided a loss  by intercepting a pass in the last minute  as Berg was driving for the score and a potential win.

This is a game where all the players not redshirting should play to get some experience and build some depth. Apparently they have burnt the redshirt of Wells and you'll get to see their "new" star at QB. Probably other QBs too.

Should be VERY interesting.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Wolf's Contract
« on: September 01, 2014, 09:52:51 PM »
Just read the details and terms of Wolf's contract extension ( and buy-out clauses) and something jumped out at me. I'm too lazy to do the research, but someone tell me when the NCAA's show cause order expires on Tressel.

YSU Penguin Athletics / OT transfer from Louisville
« on: August 01, 2014, 02:18:03 PM »
Roster shows RFR OT Cameron Fraser, 6'4, 265 transfer from U. of  Louisville. In H. S. he had 9 offers from among others, Ole Miss and Arkansas. #4 rated T from Alabama. 3 stars .  4 years of eligibility. Heres one to watch. LOts of upsides.

YSU Penguin Athletics / The State of YSU athletics
« on: April 06, 2014, 10:38:03 PM »
Dropped  over to look at the athletic site  and was floored at how bad the athletic program has gotten.  Looking at the baseball team, an expensive program to run with trips down  south for days on end running up bills for rooms, food and travel,  they are currently 3-20 with more   losses coming. This program has been a consistent BIG loser for several years. Over at softball, they are 16-15. Mens tennis is 5-11 and women's tennis is 8-9. Track, outside of an individual here or there doing well,  has nothing to show for a team.

On the heels of the losing basketball season, one,   of just many for over a decade and the fall out of  athletes leaving the programs, it looks like another banner year of losing in athletics for YSU.  Based on the AD remarks in the paper several years ago.............. "we aren't trying to win  championships", how long does this 3rd rate athletic dept get a pass  and be allowed to continue on its merry way ?

Football may be next to fall.

But, hey, we got a Youngstown  guy in charge of athletics, right ?

YSU Penguin Athletics / QB review
« on: November 27, 2013, 12:43:36 PM »
Lets take a look at QB, the most important position for next  year, since Hess, 6'3, 230 will be gone. He set new records for passing at YSU but leaves without playing a single playoff game.  Often described as a "system" QB, was not quick and spent most time throwing and not running. Here's what back for next year--

Dante Nania, 6'0, 205, was the back-up. Short, an athletic QB who likes  to run and did in H.S., but also prone to what happens to running QBs -- injuries. I'm nervous when he throws as he'll throw in a crowd, doesn't always make all his reads and true arm strength is a question. While Montgomery calls plays, the QB often has options and decision making with Nania maybe his downfall. Not much experience.

Tanner Garry, 6'0, 200 was the 3rd team QB. He was a walk-on at BG who transferred here. Father was a H.S. coach. Has a live arm but lacks even more of ability   in making all his reads and makes poor decisions on who or where to throw the ball to.. Exhibits hotdog mentality which means his maturity level lacks for a strong, disciplined player on the field. Little experience.

Nick Wargo,6'3, 215, the 4th team QB. Played one year as a starter in H.S. No experience here. Was red-shirted. Lacks arm strength and doesn't make good reads. He look lost at times. Considered a project and probably a candidate for another position.

Ricky Davis, 6'3, 190, currently a Red-shirt. Played little in H.S. and transferred from Moeller to Fenwick to start for one year. Has some arm strength but accuracy and arm strength need work. Haven't seen enough to rate decision making abilities nor making his reads but can say he needs some work and might do with a couple of seasons of development.

YSU has a verbal from Hunter Wells, 6'4, about 175 . He set records in Stark Co. but played at a D-V H.S. with less than quality competition. Lacks arm strength and overall body strength. Needs a serious weight program for several years. Played in an O where he made few reads. Will not be used to the speed and abilities at this level. My evaluation is he is a project. Expect him to red -shirt.

My advice to the coaching staff -- beat the bushes for a Juco QB or find a quality transfer who isn't  getting playing time but has the abilities. Montgomery needs to evaluate what we can realistically do here next year and consider making wholesale changes to work with what limited talent is here now. Hint -- heavy run game, play action passes off the run game, waggle and delay patterns. Throw more to your backs. Use a ball control attack running  & passing with short passing game, screens, etc. May need to take more time off the clock and not worry with how many plays you can run quickly. Next year is going to be really different.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Juco Recruiting
« on: November 06, 2013, 09:52:58 PM »
Coaches may want to look in on former Ursuline player player Akise Teague now at Iowa Western C.C. Teague formerly of  U. Cincy  is available and currently has an offer from Akron. I don't like him at 5'9, 180 as a RB but a slot receiver , yes. Iowa Western won its league and Teague was a star.
