YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU vs. North Dakota State
« on: October 08, 2017, 08:36:59 PM »
The Bison roll into town undefeated, yet again, and are ranked #2 in the nation. The weather for Saturday looks fantastic for mid-October with a high of 80 and mostly sunny skies. Obviously the fan base is likely still down from the heartbreaking loss to USD, but this is a huge game under the lights and we need a big crowd to get behind the team. If we can win this game (easier said than done) we would have gone 2 of 3 against arguably the 3 best teams in the league.

Also, although I’m not too familiar with them, the Barstool Sports tailgate radio show will be on campus for this top ten battle.

Go Guins!

YSU Penguin Athletics / #15 YSU at #23 Illinois State
« on: October 03, 2016, 07:52:13 PM »
Well I know we played mediocre and all last week, but just a reminder, we still won a MVFC game after turning it over 4 times, not punting until there was 3 minutes again, and kicking three field goals in the redzone. I don't care if it is USD or SDSU, a win in the conference is important. I think anyone who sat in the stands Saturday knows if this team plays to their potential, and I do believe we are close, they can be pretty darn good this year. That is not some rah rah mindset, it is true. Our defense played pretty darn good Saturday despite those two late drives in the game. Offensively we need to learn to convert those red zone possessions into TD's, but if we can do that, watch out. Special teams wise, we are in very very good shape. We have the ability to kick touch backs this year and any returns, to my memory, have not gone for very big returns.

Now we have a big road test, albeit a winnable one, vs an Illinois State that has lost 3 straight since beating Northwestern. They are pretty good defensively, but it seems as though their offense is nowhere near as strong as previous years when Roberson and Coprich took over in the second half to beat us each year. This is a winnable game and one we need to win.

I fully expect Pelini to have this team ready.

Go Guins!

YSU Penguin Athletics / NDSU Media Rights Outrage
« on: July 31, 2016, 12:48:07 PM »
Interesting read on NDSU shutting out some local media, such as Jeff Kolpack and Dom Izzo who are well respected across the Valley, from covering the Bison:

All that winning got to their heads up in Fargo apparently.

I think everyone on this site will be welcomed by this news tomorrow.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Night Game vs Illinois State
« on: October 04, 2015, 08:41:17 AM »
If I'm not mistaken, this series is pretty much dead even and the home team has won every game since 2006 I do believe, when YSU beat the top five Redbirds in Bloomington.

If it is dry Saturday, our community has no excuses not to get out there to support this team.

Beat Illinois State!!!

@CBSSportsCFB: Report: Pitt WR Tyler Boyd charged with DUI (USATSI)

@CBSPittsburgh: JUST IN: #Pitt's head coach releases statement on Tyler Boyd: "He will be held accountable."

I can recall tailgating before the game there two years ago and they had a handful of players out due to injury and suspension. Could we see a repeat?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Ohio State RB Bri'onte Dunn May Transfer to YSU
« on: January 22, 2015, 08:23:14 PM »
Link is a premium link on Bucknuts:

My uncle, a huge Buckeye fan, messaged me the text:

Dunn And Gone? … Multiple sources have informed us Ohio State third-year sophomore running back Bri’onte Dunn could transfer to Youngstown State following spring semester (which ends in late May).
As one source put it: “I’d say there’s a better chance he’ll be at YSU than OSU this fall.”

If Dunn does transfer to YSU, he would be eligible to play immediately – since the Penguins are an FCS (I-AA) team – and have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot, 216-pound Dunn had just nine carries for 63 yards as a third-year sophomore for the national champion Buckeyes in 2014.

A product of Canton GlenOak High, Dunn was ranked as the No. 8 running back in the country and the No. 96 overall prospect in the 2012 cla$$, per the 247Sports Composite.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Official: Head Coach Search Thread
« on: November 24, 2014, 07:49:48 PM »
I suggest we make this the main thread to discuss all of the head coaching candidates. The other thread can be used to discuss the Wolf buyout, etc.
Youngstown State (FCS – OH): Eric Wolford will be bought out of his contract per sources. We have been told that it is a $100,000 buyout. Brett McMurphy first reported the news this evening. Coaches are telling us to expect the new head coach to have direct ties to Youngstown State president (and former head coach) Jim Tressel.
Youngstown State: Head coach Eric Wolford will not return next season, according to ESPN's Brett McMurphy. Wolford went 31-30 in five seasons at YSU. One name that could be considered for the job is Wisconsin-Whitewater's Lance Leipold. Former YSU and Ohio State coach Jim Tressel became YSU's president earlier this year.

@andrewrivins Brian Wright to Youngstown State rumors swirling. Best record (4-0) out of any interim coach the past 5 seasons. Sorry, Ed.

@FootballScoop It’s really amazing how many quality coaches have come through Youngstown. Tressel &co. will have plenty of good options.

@FootballScoop Tressel can be pretty convincing so I wouldn’t close the door, just telling you I don’t think he will be the next guy up at YSU

@FootballScoop At Ohio State, Fickell is making $600k+. Wolford, at YSU, was making ~$250k. For that reason & others, I don’t think Fick is next at YSU

Indiana State invades Stambaugh Stadium to take on Youngstown State in what is clearly a must-win for each team. Indiana State must win-out to have any chance of making the playoffs, and for all intents and purposes, YSU must win this because NDSU looms a week later.

Indiana State has won just twice at Stambaugh, once in 2010, 30-24, and in 1995 13-6. YSU finished 3-8 each of those two seasons.

Indiana State is coming off a 32-17 loss in Terre Haute, IN to South Dakota State. YSU is coming off a 35-21 loss to Illinois State in Normal, IL.

Ma$$ey has YSU favored 24-21 and his model gives YSU a 60% chance of winning.

On paper, this is a game YSU should win. It will be very interesting to see how YSU responds. Will they lay an egg like last year vs. SDSU, or will they respond in a big way and quiet the critics like they did against SIU.

I expect YSU to come out ready to go. Weather looks cold, but dry, with a high of 37 on Saturday.

I plan on making it and I plan on being as loud as possible. Naturally, I would not expect a big crowd, but to those of you going, bring a cowbell or some form of noise maker and be loud all game long. This team absolutely deserves it. I truly believe a win on Saturday puts them in great shape to make the playoffs.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU at Missouri State
« on: September 28, 2014, 07:39:00 AM »
YSU travels to Missouri State for a top 25 match-up Saturday in Springfield, MO. Missouri State recently renovated their stadium and it is beginning to rival Stambaugh Stadium imho. Note the pictures at the end of this post. In addition, their fans are pushing for a 2nd straight sell-out of 18,000, although they only have 13,000 sold right now per:

If you get real bored, stroll to some of their other threads and see how a good chunk of their fan base wants to move up to the FBS. I have no idea what they have done in 20 years to even be considered for the FBS? They consistently average 10-11k fans per year, and their new stadium only gets them to around 18,000. I think some of their fans are just drinking the kool-aide right now.

Nonetheless, this is a very good challenge for YSU. Ma$$ey has MSU #3 in the FCS and 6 point favorites over YSU. The computers like the Bears a lot more than the humans, who have them in the 20s in the rankings.

This game reminds me a lot of last year's MVFC opener at Southern Illinois. MSU has a very good offense, but has a defense that I think we can exploit in areas. They are ranked 46th in the FCS in rush defense and 76th in pa$$ defense. YSU is ranked 33rd in rush defense, but tied for 91st in pa$$ defense. Needless to say, this may be a shoot-out.

Also, does anyone know if this game will be broadcast on area TV or are we going to be forced to buy the online video if we want to watch it? Last year all of our road games were broadcast live on WFMJ or WBCB!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Night Game: St. Francis
« on: September 14, 2014, 10:10:57 PM »
The Red Flash of St. Francis invade Stambaugh for a night game this Saturday. Early weather forecasts show mid 70s and sunny skies! If the weather stays nice, as it appears it will all week, we should see a bigger crowd even if it is against a weaker opponent.

St. Francis did give JMU a game before JMU got some breathing room in the second half to win 38-22.
