YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: 2020 Football Season

The University of Houston announced that they had 6 athletes test positive for coronavirus yesterday. The school had allowed some football and basketball players back on 6/1 for voluntary workouts, which they have now suspended.

Its probably not going to take a whole lot for schools to start cancelling fall camps and seasons next, and once one school does that a lot of AD's will feel pressure to do "something" and the whole fall sports slate can fall apart quickly.

I certainly hope this doesn't happen but will not be the least bit shocked if it does.

Anyone know if we have allowed any of our kids back to use the campus facilities?

One time I'd like to see us go outside the box and take somebody like Diggs and turn him into Ted "The Stork" Hendricks.  This kid is LONG agile and seems to have a feel for the field.  We throw to the TE maybe 3-4 times a game on a good day.  I want this kid making the other team react 50 times a game.  With Reed gone we have pass rush problems.  Put this kid and LB and blitz him and the O will need to make adjustments every play.

This is a very creative idea. I'd like to see that also. TE we always have talent and they never get used enough to be a factor so penciling a kid in at TE before you even see him seems like a wasted opportunity.

We need some outside the box thinking...come up with a plan to get the best athletes on the field until you have a couple years of "ÿour guys" recruited for the system you hope to someday run.

This aged well
Boy, it sure didn’t did it?

Read this simpletons.

https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/04/coronavirus-response-sweden-avoids-isolation-economic-ruin/

One minor difference. Sweden's government listens to medical experts and relays their suggestions with a single, clear directive. Ours ignores their advice and tells people to do things like seek out the malaria, lupus and arthritis drug hydroxychloroquine, despite no clinical trial indicating its effectiveness in combating COVID-19.

Did we go overboard by isolating everyone instead of those in the high at-risk categories? Probably so. We missed the boat on having a national plan so state governors did their own thing, erring on the side of caution.

I live in a beach town, and I sure am seeing a LOT of elderly, out-of-state tourists who are ignoring the government and medical communities advice to self-isolate AT HOME. I wonder if that can be said for the ones Sweden has asked to stay put? I would bet not.

There's a lot to be said for common sense and a unified message. We have what, 5 states STILL without any social distancing restrictions?

Don't be shocked if are doing this again in the fall.

Going off of CDC death rate information for the state of NY from 2018 (most recent year CDC has with data) for full year 2018 NY was at 18.4 deaths per 100,000 people for the flu. Source below.

You have just provided evidence that NY death rate is 28 per 100,000 so far for COVID19.

Would that not suggest that this is more deadly than the flu?

Yes it does. But if he wants to die on this hill rather than be proven wrong, let him.

I think what Kandrase and Red are saying is very important. They have already made the decision to support the new coach. This is what we all have to do. This is my team, no matter what the cost. I have made myself known that of the four names mentioned in the media, I clearly supported the hiring of coach Shane. To me, we will hire #3 of the 4 names mentioned; but Tyrell is #4. Although I cannot say that my bar is as low as 4 conference wins and I am not going to give this guy as much time as I gave Wolf.

Unless you're willing to go on record and state that Bo left the cupboard well stocked for a title run you need to give Phillips some time.

If his hands are tied by lack of $$$ like we seem to fear it isnt going to matter if he stays or we fire him because that's creating a no-win scenario for whatever schlub agrees to come here and try and win against terrible odds against them.

With you Go guins Mark is a great athlete and most importantly a great kid. This has to be an emotional rollercoaster for him right about now. Obviously would never turn away talent like Crenshaw, but this is where our recruiting department really failed. You Bring in a guy like  waid and label him as your centerpiece and work really hard to get him , then the following  year you offer another quarterback  when you should be offering quality lineman and ammunition for your centerpiece.  This was always a big issue of mine with Bo. Wasted  Scholarships everywhere you looked . I really feel Phillips will be a huge improvement in this area

Yes, like a bunch of useless WR's, a crop of useless LB's and a bunch of smaller defensive linemen that went over to offense when Bo felt they did not match his needs on D; even though we all know if they do not match-up on DL, they they certainly do not match up for OL. I think it was the media who put that label on Waid. Got to give us fans something to talk about.

I have to admit I was surprised they didn't let Waid run the entire offense if he was as good as everyone was claiming he was. They didn't let him throw much for a reason.

I'm not saying he can't run that scheme, but they're use of him tells me they think he can't run that scheme.

NDSU didn't seem to have any issues modifying their playbook to suit the skills of their new FR QB. How'd that work out?

Why didn't we do that for Waid if he is so great? Why didn't more schools want him?

Handing him the starting QB job and not trying to recruit someone better is folly.

Stick was right, recruiting and assistants are WAY more important than this guys resume.

He needs to come in and manage the situation. He comes from a successful program in Cincy and was here when we were successful also. To me, that experience is valuable and useful.

Give him a chance. Do you think things were on the upswing before Bo left?

Like was stated before, he has a punchers chance to be a good one.

We've seen how hiring coordinators to be HC has gone. Hell we just had a 9 win a season HC from the Big 10 and he couldn't get it done here. Its about more than resumes.

All that being said, he isn't going to get more $$$ for assistants than Bo did unless this donor steps up to the plate. And if he doesn't, I don't expect the results to be there either.

Recruits and assistants guys, kind of a big deal lol.

Cincy and Iowa State have both been pretty darn good the past couple seasons we may just get some decent guys here, young guys that can relate to today's player and hopefully with the savvy to recruit those kids. You'll be surprised how much better we are when the recruiting improves no matter who is calling the shots. We did make the NC game with Wolf's guys and Bo calling the shots. He just couldn't replace those guys and we went right in the crapper. Bo was still the same guy, so what changed? Staff and players.

If true on Tyrell ... MAJOR disappointment for a pick as a head-coach.

I understand your concern but look at it this way... Tyrell is the only candidate who actually built programs into powerhouses. The other guys were are just assistants who didn’t have to build anything. Even Bo didn’t have any experience building a program into something great.  Also he’s gonna be able to relate to this generation much better than an old school type like Bo or Shane.

Yes HS to D1 is one helleva leap. But he does have d1 experience so it’s not like he will be blindsided by how everything works.

Well said. I'd rather give him a shot than hire a retread that 's already bombed before as a HC.

We need someone who's proven they can be a HC. I don't care about what level, but I'm tired of hiring coordinators and finding out they are awesome coordinators but suck as head coaches.

That's a losing strategy.

Coach Shane was a disaster as a HC. No thanks.

Not sold on Carl either. Nothing there fills me with confidence from his last HC gig  :-X

If its those 2 clowns versus a D2 HC, give me the D2 guy. Especially if he's young.
A lot of water under the dam since '08 don't you think?  Coach Monty shouldn't be eliminated because of a Miami record from over a decade ago.
I thought Carl did a pretty good job at BGSU under some trying circumstances.
Sorry, but name calling of coaches Montgomery and Pelini may impress some, but I think it shows immaturity
That being said, my money is on Marrow!

I think you just lost all your money bud.

I do love the idea of a great recruiter as HC though, especially if he gets a couple good DC's to come on board.

in other words do not follow the Cleveland Browns strategy
Yes, if anyone needed any reminders, do not emulate the Browns

Bo got 3 years, 2.3 million a year from LSU

I hope we were smart enough to have a buyout written into his contract.

Need to put Carl back to DC and fire at least two of these three, D'Alesio, Baker and Gomes.
A very solid idea but not likely I'm afraid. I wish it was.
