YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Top 25 Poll

Schedule is brutal from here on in. Only game we look good against is ISU. Then we play 3 out of 4 in top 7 and one in top 20. We have two wins against top 20 teams and the WIU game was a killer. But teams on the rebuild have setbacks like that. Looking forward to a few upsets!  Week off to get prepared. Beat ISU on the road with some momentum heading into the meat grinder at the end of the season. Feel it coming. A big win coming up!!

Well - here we go again! O line play needs to improve or we are in for another long game.  DP said these are the best wide outs we have seen all year - should be a challenge for the secondary who have not played all that great either.

YSU just lost there best QB. they have no chances with Crenshaw. Crenshaw has terrible footwork to small and cant hit a WR past the 5 yard line. like i said before good athlete but not at QB.

Well, to be honest, I don't think Tom Brady would do well pa$$ing the ball downfield with the amount of time any QB has currently.  It is hard to make 3 reads when someone or several d-lineman are in your face the second you look up from getting the ball in the shotgun. The best QBs have time to make their reads based on coverages at the snap.  There is a lot going on presnap with motions so that QBs can determine coverages and who will most likely be the 1st read.  I think Crenshaw needs to go under center more with two backs in the backfield for either protection or a release after not finding anyone open.  Run the TE in motion for protection on some plays. Run split backs in the shotgun for max protection and release one of them for outlet pa$$es.  Crenshaw is a better runner than Waid so that has proven to be a plus.  It is hard to get a read on his pa$$ing since he is under so much pressure on every down, because teams are running run blitzes against our run formations, without protection, it all a moot point.  We got killed in the trenches last week at UNI.  Both on offense and defense.  Until we fix that, QB play does not matter.

Watched the game again last night - the O-line got completely manhandled and our D-line were being pancaked consistently.  UNI lineman were dominating our lines.  Plain and simple.  Can't win in the trenches you will not win games.  Sad to see that happen.

Agreed. We are not that good. I would love to see stats on the amount of time Crenshaw had to throw the ball because on my counts he may have had 2 seconds on each play. Canít expect much from that. Gave up To many big plays on defense. UNI is legit and way ahead of us which we expected. It is going to be a long season and now is the time to season these kids for the rest of this year and going into the summer off season. I canít blame the OC. He has little work with when it comes to the O line. They are weak, slow and are not ready for the level of play they are expected to play at. They got beat on every play. I am really shocked at the defense and how they have regressed since the spring season. That is an issue. To many big plays. The staff is young. The team is young and we have a long way to go but I still am a DP fan. He will get this going. Give him the time he allotted and let him go. We need to continue to support the coach and players. They play hard for the talent they have and what they have to work with. We are not that deep!!

Tough place to play - rare wins out in Iowa.  Flat field, flat turf, play in a tin can, fans right on top of you, etc..
Let's put 3 quarters together this week - keep building and get Crenshaw the experience he needs.

Ok - I stewed long enough.  It is a rebuild - we knew that coming in to the season.  The key is to find bright spots on offense and defense and build on those and continue to coach up areas of weakness. One thing I do know...if a QB doesn't have time to throw a 5 or 7 step drop pa$$ that some of you are complaining about - I don't care who is back at QB - it will be a mess.  I don't think we are at the point for Crenshaw to audible out of blitzes and recognize coverages yet.  That comes with experience.

You want to stretch a defense - first you have to have the time to drop 5 steps, let the receivers get into the patterns and throw it.  When you can't drop back 5 or 7 because the defense is in your face, then forget throwing the deep ball.  This is Crenshaws third game in the toughest conference in the division.  We are rebuilding and O-line from nothing and Penislini left 0 depth at any position on the lines.  These games are exhausting with the new offenses and you need to be able to sub players that have the ability to get the job done - we are not there yet!  I still am a DP fan and like what he is doing...give him time.  Now we go on the road to UNI - anything can happen in this league!!

Miami rarely loses at home, and teams usually struggle to score against them in their facility.  Yet Michigan State pretty much did whatever they wanted on offense. Incarnate Word can make all but a handful of elite FCS defenses look foolish. After opening with those two, our defensive statistics might not be a proper index to the abilities of this unit. As others have noted, let us see how this defense responds to league competition.

Well said!  My sentiments exactly.  This game is the barometer for the defense.  With UIW we had to use a lot of players - 1st game, running a fast paced offense, we were worn down.  MSU - same thing as we had to try to stop an elite Big10 team in the second game.  I think the run game is going to open up the pa$$ing game - control the game clock, keep their offense off the field and establish long scoring drives will be the key.  Looking forward to what we can do in the conference. D-line has to step it up this game, agains MSU we were in some good positions but missed tackles were an issue.  The conference is what you have prepared for and now is the time to set the tone.

62-56! 950 yards pa$$ing in the game?  WTH?  Anyhow - lets get this started.  This is the game to establish the balanced attack of run game and pa$$ game.  If we can give Crenshaw some time, we should be able to get the ball downfield.  Must win at home in the conference!

Strollo and company hired a  HC who has zero coordinator experience at the D1 level yet is expected to turn this thing around .  Not to mention he has to compete with 6 MAC schools for recruits within OHIO.   No need to worry though we have Petersons 20 year old son as the recruiting coordinator.  I could go on and on but have lost my interest after 20 years. If u don't think there is a problem look no further than this forum where only 20 posts were  made today after playing Michigan State.

The reason nobody is on this board posting anymore is because everyone is sick and tired of the cynical remarks and negative comments.  I'm about to jump off myself.  Who wants to read comments after two games that DP is no good, the team is a joke, no talent, recruiting sucks, Strollo sucks, Tressel sucks, YSU sucks...Youngstown at its finest...whoaaa is me...what have you done for me lately, steel is coming back, wear a mask - don't wear a mask.

After all the program has gone through, I'm looking for a modicum of competence and integrity. I cannot support a team that self-sabotages and lacks basic ethics. Ws are nice but not at any cost.

So far, I like DP....a lot. However, he and his coordinators need to grow along with the players. Their fright and complete lack of confidence was obvious in the play calling. Ppl want to win but also be entertained. He's also got to lose the damn mask.

I have to politely disagree here.  First game after a year of COVID practices, iffy spring season and a two month turnaround - why would you want to put these inexperienced players in situations that they are not confident and know will not work due to lack of progress or experience.  These are young, hungry coaches also, let them coach the kids to their abilities - not what you expect them to be.  Coaches know talent and what a kid can and cannot do on the field - if you put them in situations they have no confidence in or are not prepared - paralysis through analysis and you get poor play, frozen feet, over guessing and lack of instinctual play.  It is not lack of confidence in play calling, it is coaching to the current abilities of your talent - coaches that expect more than their kids can do, will fail because they are not prepared for what you want from them.  "Are you not entertained?!!"  What is this Gladiator?  You want entertainment watch the NFL...or UFC.  You want a clown on the field?  Pelini was a clown and entertaining to watch on the field - look how well he did?  I love what I am seeing in Phillips so far - lots of intangibles and the kids are wanting to play - that is a big hurdle after the last three years.

Good hype vid except Phillips looks like a lil bóó wearing a muzzle.
Seriously, when they are filming for a hype video, pull down the damn mask!

That was from the spring - he was required to wear a mask at all times with the team and on sidelines - if you recall..that wasn't his policy - that was the NCAA.  Give the guy a break.
