Jacori Owens in transfer portal.  Another no-brainer.  Owens didn't get much playing time in his 2 years at YSU.

Two bigs gone so it looks like coach has to go out and bring in some beef.

According to verbal commits we did not recruit him

My point meant to be if he had contact with him as a transfer.  I know from first hand they didn't offer out of HS thinking he would be higher profile than YSU.

Mateo committed to Slippery Rock for his final year to eligibility

Not sure if coach C recruited him but going to Slippery rock is a wtf to me.   Definitely would of contributed at YSU.

Maceo Austin from Sharon Kennedy is transferring from Duquesne .   He hasn't played much though last 2 years due to personal issues.    See if he considers us or is it not worth the personal issues.  He is listed at 6-5 and was a fairly high rated recruit out of High school.  Averaged 7 points a game as freshman at Duquesne.  But seem to have fallen off of the map and now wants to make a comeback for a year.   Any thoughts?

Yes.  His dad having a disabilty always wanted Maceo to play close to home and Duquense was a great option.   Maybe YSU will be a great fit too.

I tend to agree with the above posters that feel coach C and the portal are a good mix.  Coach hit it out of the park in his 2022 portal haul and 2023 remains to be seen.  In sales you're as good as your last sale.

Having been at YSU for six years has given Calhoun time to build relationships with players and coaches.  I'm sure he's seen many college prospects at his camps he has annually.
I know he recruited Nelson out of hs and not sure on Cohil but he had a relationship with Dwayne and Brandon Rush while they were in high school.

I always hear that building relationships is the #1 factor in recruiting so I think coach C has a decent foundation laid down.

Not a surprise.  Will's minutes went down this season and I wish him well.  He really provided a big spark in some games in the 21-22 season,  Watched him play in the Cleveland pro-am and he was really drilling the three point shot.

Noticed Garvin Clarke from Akron is in the portal.  I'm pretty sure YSU offered him out of high school and not sure if that means anything or not in 2023.

What ever happened to Mattia Acunzo who  transferred here from RMU and is from Sharon Kennedy.  Hurt?
He was on the bench i believe but cannot be for sure.  Blue Ribbon college magazine said Eligible in January of 2023 but i didn't see that .  He is 6-8 and is very talented.   Can someone find out if he is still with the team.  He is from Italy.

Leg injury.  Not sure of the specifics.

My take on potential transfers.

Will Dunn -   Played a lot last season but not this year.  I'm thinking he would leave and go to a smaller school whether that's D2 or other.

Jacori Owens - I also think he's gone.  It looked liked he was in the rotation during the first game against Canisius and then he rarely got minutes the rest of the season.

Shemar Rathan Mayes - On the fence on this one.  Mayes started a lot of games at YSU and I know he had an injury but unless he was still hurt it seemed that he did not get back in the rotation in the  late part of the season.

Myles Hunter - Is someone I'd call probable to stay.  He was in the rotation and got decent time on the court.  Unless he wants to be more of 'the man" then he'll look elsewhere.

Josh Irwin -Could  be looking to something like Luke Chicone did going to a John Carrol or similar. Two years in  the program and only blow out minutes or against non D1 opponents.  Granted he did redshirt his first year.  Seems like a great teammate and showed the most enthusiasm and support from the bench.

Brandon Rush - Should be back and a major contributor.

John Lovelace - Same as Rush.

I have zero inside information and only speculating.   These guys want to play and I don't blame them.  Why sit on the bench when a good opportunity  presents itself.

Coach C was adamant about going hard in the portal and that's his job to bring in the best players and what he did last year in the portal made some guys in the program slide down in their time on the court.

Btw, it was interesting that Robert Morris lost both Cheeks and Green to the portal who were big time producers at RMU.   When your best players want to go elsewhere that hurts the program as we know with naz and DQ in the past.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Calhoun press conference and the future
« on: March 16, 2023, 05:29:18 PM »
Three keys from the presser were transfer portal, new arena or upgrade, and NIL.

1.  NIL is essential if you want to compete in our league but the whole thing makes me ill so I'll leave it at that.

2. Upgrade Beeghly or build a new arena.  Our basketball facility should be as good as the others in the league and I would put Beeghly near the bottom.  This is another topic I find annoying although I understand YSU needs to keep up in the arms war to stay competitive.

3. Transfer portal to me is the key.  Coach said "we did it last year and will do it again".  All five starters were from the portal and it gave YSU their first conference crown ever so that's the way it's going  if you want to win NOW.

Looking at the current 13 man roster(on scholarship) six have used up their eligibility and I would say possibly four  more might hit the portal.  Four more are coming in as verbal recruits or signees but if you noticed in the past some recruits never actually arrive.
I'm thinking coach C and staff might be bringing in a boat load of transfers if not another frosh or so.

Nothing to be ashamed of.  Okie had bigger and better athletes.   YSU had nothing inside and they needed to have an exceptional three point shooting game which did not happen.

Need to box out.  Find your man and put a body on him flash to the ball with two hands.

They're the more talented team so I'm happy we're competing.

I think that game is here in Youngstown due to issues with Oklahoma states arena issues.

That's was my understanding too.

Chez, cherry picking on YSU playing non D1 teams is true but every college plays the sisters of the poor teams in their non conference schedule.   Duke does it ,Ohio State you name any big programs they have those games.

Maybe there is more work to do for coach C but I'm not that naive to think he won't have options based on his six year track record at Youngstown.   Money talks.
