Why is it we lose players to Akron and Kent.  No one goes to their games. No tradition.  No Bowl game until this year for Akron.  What is the draw.

3 letters.  N. F. L.   If you are a kid playing college football in anything but D3 you have been trained to think that if you "work hard enough" You'll play on Sunday.  We all know this is not true.  Getting to the NFL is equal parts talent, hardwork, and more luck than not.  Part of that luck is, the biggest college you can feasibly go to the better chance you'll be noticed.  Harrison, Edelman, Cribbs, Kline, Muir, Elam, Murray,Williams, Young, Gates, Simmons, Konz, Kitchen, Archer, Winters,  All in the NFL and all played for Kent State in the last 15-20 years.  There are probably more.  In all 40 players in kent states history have made the NFL.  I think that's a bit of a draw.

Just a reminder:

http://www.vindy.com/news/2015/may/08/pelinis-contract-saves-ysu-money/

I'm glad he's here.

It is amazing that one University is willing to pay $8,000,000 to get rid of a coach, and another is happy to save $50,000 a year.

The difference in what the power 5 make on athletics vs YSU and others is staggering.

Not sure how many times this has to be a topic of discussion when talking FCS and FBS but, hardly ANYONE makes money off of athletics.  16 percent of FBS schools (20 turned an overall profit in 2013) And only 5 of those schools do that without subsidies.  NO division II programs turned a profit.  Its not about how much they make, its about how much that state, community and administration care to invest in the program.  You're either prepared to invest of not.

this kevin schnepf dude is the BIGGEST LOSER ON THE PLANET   total small town dip#hit.

This guy has no idea about Youngstown, Ohio and what makes us tick. Unless you live here you have no idea.  Bo will be fine here.  He is Youngstown.  The people love that passion.  Bo will recruit a new QB, get depth at O-Line and fix the special teams and the rest of the MVFC will need to be aware of the Penguins.

Isn't this exactly the problem?  What makes Youngstown tick? It is mind boggling to think, a city that a short time ago had the nations highest poverty rate, one of the highest rates of citizen exodus in the last 50 years, mob violence into the 90's, and a "re-emergence" based on the service industry reacts to anything negative by circling the wagons tighter, and relies on nepotism to solve its problems.   Bo will be gone, by 2018, and the athletic program will be back at square one, passion is one thing, delusion is another beast and it eats raw meat.

Thats a whole lot of Waxing poetic about Strollo.  One would think your biased!  1) NCAA is only interested in policing high profile teams,  YSU hasnt been high profile in nearly two decades, so the compliance argument is baseless.  The NCAA auditing YSU is about as useless, and expensive as auditing Sacred heart 2)Poor old Strollo because he had to deal with the same title IX nonsense everyone in the country had to deal with??  3) you werent a real D-I university before strollo why?  because you didn't have the WATTS? or the outdoor track?  Well you had championships before.  I guess some would trade championships for some shiny new stuff but not many.4) IAAF your whole race argument for Gameday is a Straw-man defense at its base.  "Race card" "Liberal media Bias" "Herman Cain is the real black candidate"....NONE of that has ANY thing to do with why Gameday is at JMU over coming to, or talking about YSU....Their 7-1....not 3-3......OOPS 3-4

5
Facts are indeed facts.  So when Pelini leaves after next year for the power 5, having accomplished whatever he will accomplish, which at this point doesn't seem like it will be much, 1) Will Strollo be allowed to hire the next coach? 2)Will YSU move to D2 3) what new building/slash facility construction/upgrade will be announced to draw attention away from habitual almost genetic mediocrity of the current administration.   I hear the ghost of Dike Beede is looking for a spot.

I believe what YSUFB93 is attempting to simply explain, that penguinpower's post, like many here in the past, has been an attempted to conflate two things he hates (in this case 3, which takes talent, pure unadulterated talent...or ignorance)  that have absolutely nothing to do with each other, Liberals, Kent State football, and women, in that order.  This is level 99 trolling and I applaud you sir (I wont say, or madam, because after your post I'm quite sure you think having to reference both sexes in an obvious case of anonymity, is just another brainwash by Women's Lib, Bra burning, Lesbians.)  Again I applaud your sir.  Now I will sit an wait for the inevitable anonymous pissing contest, until the topic gets erased.....DO carry on.  ;D

Zallow is a special talent.  I believe he'll become the greatest Penguin track athlete of all time.

Thats quite the statement to make considering YSU has only had one athlete make it on the podium in track and field history.  And nothing about the sprint program, including its lack of regional qualifiers, suggests that it is a possibility.  Not to mention the complete lack; every year; of sprinters from northern climates even qualifying for the national meet.  At best it is a slap in the face of the gentleman mentioned above.  And his former teammate Neu a 2nd team all-american.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Track and field shakeup??
« on: May 25, 2015, 01:28:21 PM »
Looks like a big part of the YSU track teams success has called it quits or been fired?  The assistant throws coaching position has been posted online.   This could be an interesting transition for a very successful team, with a coach of that caliber ushered out the jury will be out to see if its a positive transition.

IAA hmmmm i could swear I heard some of those points somewhere  ;).  But very well explained nonetheless.  I would have to disagree with you on one point though,  The YSU women's track "team" may perform at a higher level, but this is probably due to the NCAA limit on scholarships in that sport 12.6 for men 18 for women.  No idea if YSU is fully funded or not (though I would suspect not).  I would say YSU track and field seemingly gets much better individuals on the men's side, 3 all-american awards on the men's side alone last year, plus a podium finish.  These things have not happened on the women's side.  So while Women's track may be doing "better" in terms of championships the Men's team is playing more of a national "avertising role".  I would think the latter would be better for an athletic department.

P.S.   I have a very loose association with the NCAA track and field world (a cousin) but a trusted one, and it seems that YSU has one of the better coaches in the country tutoring the throwers on its track team.  There isn't a great deal to go on in his Bio, but from a historical standpoint he may be one of the best coaches YSU has ever had, in any sport.  It would be nice to hear more about him.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: The State of MBB, Part Two
« on: April 20, 2015, 08:26:45 PM »
The talent pool in MBB over the entire country is drying up.  Watching the NCAA Tournament this year was like watching top-tier high school ball.  With the exception of Kentucky and Duke, two schools who will continue to suck up the "talent" from high school because that is a kids best chance at a 1 and done and get to show themselves in the tournament to make millions.
True basketball is a team game but 5 guys that "work hard" will lose to 5 guys who could play in the pros.  Everytime. In other words you cant teach talent.  And now to expect ANY coach to go to YSU and convince kids to move all the way across the country to live in Youngstown for 4 years for a "chance" to make a tournament is crazy talk.  I highly doubt Slocum likes to lose but he cant win.  It is not in the cards.  And the new ruling about extra money has now just created a bidding war for the power 5 scraps.  So the question that is left is how to recruit basketball players away from the Power 5 conferences without a massive ignorance of the NCAA rulebook, to place with the highest rate of citizen flight?

How does that explain the success of the YSU WBB program?  YSU WBB has recruited players from PA, MI, and IN.  There are not routine defections of players.

Is there a larger pool of talent of WBB collegiate athletes?

Because of title IX there is one thing anyone with a moderately athletic daughter knows...someone, somewhere will have a lot of money with no blue chip to spend it on.  There is actually less of an elite talent pool for women in ALL sports.  But there is also an embarrassment of riches in the form of opportunities that women have to play, because of the mandate of hosting women's sports.  There is a reason why the ACC and Pac-10 have near Olympic caliber soccer teams and the ones at YSU's level resemble high school matches, though the money and opportunities are identical.

In basketball this translates to less opportunities per team, making the great teams harder to make, leaving better talent out on the fringes, with a lot of other schools willing and able to pay, which means more talent slips through the cracks.  WAY more than on the men's side.  And until the WNBA gives out million dollar a year contracts, the only real way to get "paid" is to get a full scholarship (women tend to be better students, and also less delusional about professional sports) get some tv time and hope to be a top three draft spot for the WNBA, if not they have a degree.   With the current rule changes a lot of schools are going to have to make a lot of choices about the theory of "revenue sports"

If my child decided to run away from home......I could explain it away by saying it is the "age" we live in. I could make excuses to justify in my mind...why it wasn't something I could have changed. Or I could look at the problem my "family" fostered and attempt to change it.
That's the problem. Change is feared....for so many reasons...but it is truly what is necessary.
We are "losing" the talent on these teams! Because they are quitters? I don't believe that. These kids have a small window to be successful in their collegiate careers...and they see apathy! They see attendance that is negligible, a fan base that lives for football and no hope on the horizon for change. These kids are sold a song and dance on how they can make a difference...be the start....of something great! They are young...and they are not patient....like a lot of you are. I would assume that staying the course is a sign of patience.....and not apathy...or worse yet...stupidity.
I am not blaming the fans. This is entertainment and you pay for what you value....what you enjoy. There hasn't been a lot to enjoy over the years.....therefor a lot have chosen to "change the channel".
I would hope things couldn't get worse....but maintaining the "status quo" is even worse. Something has to change.

The things that actually need changing would upset ALOT of apple carts, don't look for real change anytime soon.  Unless you mean merely changing paint colors on the titanic.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: New Sport: Women's Bowling
« on: March 17, 2015, 05:39:01 PM »
The amount of $$ spent on athletics at YSU is the envy of just about any team in the nation, outside of a few in the boonies and those that are the largest in their states. 90%+ of all DI schools with football do not even cover that single sport.

...no...just no.  The first part of that statement is just plain false.  The MAC which gets destroyed on this board on a daily basis doubles YSU's investment in athletics, lets not get into every sport men's or women's in the Power 5.
Secondly the point of football is not to cover football as only 10 schools in the COUNTRY do this annually.  The point is to have "in house" marketing for the institution (much like the USSR government subsidized sports system back in the day, it was a demonstration of their strength), and to derive donors based on that show of strength.

So what bigger schools ...what is your point? Has not Ytown always been loaded with Kids whose parents send them to Kent? I am almost 50, so this is nothing new. UC is the only school in the state with an increase in enrollment ...that is because of their new "diversity" program ...lol. Need I say any more? They now offer heavy race/gender/income/age related scholarships. Heck, their average age for student was 24.6 years as of last year ..I guarantee you that has not gone down. They are quickly becoming the largest community college in the country.

"Diversity program...lol"?  so a Diversity program that drives up enrollment is a bad thing?  what does average age of students have to do with anything?  You say largest community college in the country as if that's a bad thing and maybe it is, who knows.  But if true than where does that leave YSU?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Assistant Coaches
« on: February 25, 2015, 11:14:54 PM »
This is new.  A team, school, area so desperate for wins that it would be willing to gamble its very identity for it.  The gamble?  Bo, Ron and Carl are perfect, hard working football coaches that turn YSU around and restore its Northeast Ohio greatness back to 1991 levels (because lets face it, being nationally or even regionally known isn't in the cards, especially with the big 5 now).   OR, Bobo, Ronnie and Carlsbad form their own version of the 3 athletic stooges, and a nationwide I told you so reverberates all the way up to the president's office.

Point A, there aren't many schools that would do this, ie schools clamoring for the services of some of Bo Pelini's new and prospective staff.  They still realize that their perception of an academic institution is, in the long run, Ultimately is more important than wins (if your not power 5), and that these hires would bring that perception into question.  Which further begs the question what is the YSU administration's view of themselves?  This is an awfully desperate move to feel you have to take.  Most schools will, and have settled for football mediocrity rather than desperation.  Also, questions are raised as to just how many people are wiling to work for Bo, and how many people Bo feels he can actually trust, both are potentially dangerous answers.

Point B, IF Carl does come aboard, with the drug issues that YSU's football team has had (or any football team for the sake of fairness)  How seriously would his players take his pleas to be smart, do the right thing, make good decisions...Not a very good example.  But then again...desperation has no time for examples.

Point C, the most amazing thing about this possible decision (minus the interesting ones already made).  The cons FAR outweigh the pros.  Win the gamble..and YSU is now talked about, semi-regionally, with the likes of Mount Union; play Kent, Akron and probably win (who really cares).  Get it wrong, and ESPN is on the doorstep with every on location anchor they can scrum up, including a now "disappointed" Jaworski, the NCAA blah blah blah.   More pock marks for a pocked marked area.  More curious, even with the pros (multiple national championships) you still have an athletic department that will never be solvent (the economic facts say this), to make semi-regional success happen?...

Point D, "Rainbow Coalition? lol"....what a limited scope,  But desperation is usually hyper focused.

I wonder how many universities will stop changing paint schemes on the titanic and get to the business of dropping this blood sucking, predatory, bar-lowering sport and let basketball and olympic sports be the "marketing department" and "investment" of the institution.  And leave the hopes of profiting off of sports to those institutions that actually have the capital and alumni to make it happen.

In reality there was no right hire for this job, now or in the future, unless YSU begs, borrows, and steals its way into DI, increases athletic spending by 85 million a year, and hopes the big 5 will play Tattaglia to it's Solozzo.

General BS / Re: Backlash over Ron Brown hiring has already started
« on: February 11, 2015, 11:50:33 PM »
This whole thing has me at a loss.  Ron Brown should be on a short leash because??  I understand he is outspoken, but let's be honest, Muslims certainly wear their religious beliefs "on their sleeve."  Literally, you can see it from a 1/2 mile away.  And isn't free speech part of what we believe and teach at YSU?
If we are going to be "all inclusive" and everybody's opinion is valuable and in fact needed.  How do we justify our bias against bigots?  If Muslims are welcome, gays welcome, transgenders welcome why aren't fundamentalist Christians and bigots welcome?

That's an easy question.  No.  No they're not welcome.  Bigots and Fundamentalist Christians are never happy just saying what they believe, They believe they have some pre-ordained, manifest destiny to manipulate and tell people how to live, even change laws if necessary.   Why is this bad?  Because a majority of society thinks it is.   A person is completely free to go against society, but society is also free to cast a person out.

Its like driving the wrong way on the expressway and yelling at everyone else that they're breaking the law.  Its called being a jackass.  Just because you're on the expressway doesn't mean you have to drive the same car, listen to the same music, or go to the same place as other people.  But it does mean to keep your car in your lane in an orderly fashion so everybody gets where they're going.

As for Brown, I hope he does well at YSU, but all should know that if he says something opinionated or bigoted he will be skewered for it, and he will have earned every burn mark.  If YSU is prepared to protect his freedom of speech they should be prepared for the long greased up lens of ESPN, and lawyers.  Fact.
