YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: 570 tonight
« on: January 03, 2017, 08:19:06 PM »
I was at all the championship games.  The 91 game my guess there was 500-700 of us.  I have the same picture that Strollo has that was taken and we were lost in a sea of green.  But I have to believe the 3 years in Marshall we sent more than 1k.  It seems when we went in 97 and 99 there was at least 2k? Am I wrong?
I looked again at the overhead photo of the 1993 national championship game in my office.  Some interesting items that I noted.
  • We have a block of YSU fans in red that took up over 1/3rd of the one side of the stadium, maybe 20% of the total stadium
  • Our block of tickets was not in the center of the stadium, it began on the field house end and moved toward midfield
  • There are additional fans in red throughout the stadium
  • There were some fans in a standing room only in the endzone opposite of their fieldhouse
  • Wikipedia has the total attendance of the game at 29,218
  • My guess is that about 6,000+ Penguin fans made the trip that year
  • We were truly outnumbered and on Marshall's home turf.
  • This special set of loud fans, a great team, led by a stout defense, and a smart well coached offense, solid special teams, helped lead the Guins a 17-5 win.
I loved those years, I'm glad they are back!

A few of us are at the Comfort Inn near the Plano Medical Center.  However, I'd like to make it downtown at some point.  I have reviewed the visitors guides for Dallas and noticed a the "Y.O. Ranch Steakhouse" as well as a bar called the "OE Penguin", we obviously know who the city is rooting for.  If that isn't enough, "Penguin Days at the Dallas Zoo" started Sunday after we beat EWU and runs through the end of February.  They sure have a celebration lined up for us!

March on Penguins, March On!!

Myself and the wife. Can't wait to get to Texas. The 3 weeks will be well needed to get some of our boys healed up for the big game.
Hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Christmas and see you all in Texas.

Same same.  My wife and I are heading down.

As much as we want to know...there's no reason to let it out.  As much as it will hover around who it could be...it will make EWU prepare for all scenarios.  There's no reason to tell them how we will be changing our game plan.   I expect it to stay tight lipped until it is obvious.

YO Show, I must say, Mike Ayers makes everyone who dons the Old Gold and Black very proud to e a Terrier.  I didn't play football, but I have to say I'd break down walls for that man.  He's no-nonsense in his approach to coaching.  He's about the student first, and the athlete second.  He realizes that most likely, his players will not be playing on Sundays, therefore the lessons these young men learn on the field translate to the real world.  When the team wins, he praises his players for their efforts and preparation.  When they lose, he and his staff shoulder the blame for not getting the team prepared.  He is quick to praise the opponents.  If you hang around after the game, you will notice that the entire team will remain on the field, win or lose, and give respect to the opposition in the playing of their alma mater.

Earlier this year, against a conference foe, one of our starting o-line was late for the game, because he had to drive 2 1/2 hours to take the LSAT. He got there in the second quarter and was inserted into the lineup.  First question Ayers asked him was how he did on the test.

If there ere more coaches like Ayers, the world of college athletics would e a much better organization, and truly about the student, not the athlete.

Go Terriers!

Awesome +1

Check out @GoJacksFB's Tweet: https://twitter.com/GoJacksFB/status/803354294745321472?s=09 This could be a good start..Coach Stig getting his message out to fans and students

SDSU has the best marketing in the conference.  After logging onto their sites for research and eventually making a purchase from their online auction, I receive updates from them atleast twice a year. What they send is high quality material that makes you feel good, and you feel like reading.  They have also sent magnetic reminders for some of their events.
I do think that since Wolford began that we have increased our presence in the media, specifically through facebook and "hype" videos.  However, there is still plenty of room for improvement, but it likely will come at a cost.

I tried to keep regional matchups as best as possible while still keeping conference matchups few and far between until the quarterfinals (not the easiest thing to do, and I made the assumption the Cal Poly holds on to win tonight):

1. NDSU (SE Louisiana @ Chattanooga)
8. North Dakota (Charleston Southern @ Richmond)
4. EWU (St. Francis @ YSU)
5. Citadel (Lehigh @ Villanova)

2. Sam Houston (New Hampshire @ Illinois St.)
7. SDSU (San Diego @ Cal Poly or Weber St.)
3. Jacksonville St. (Samford @ Central Arkansas)
6. James Madison (NC A&T @ Wofford)

Last in: New Hampshire, Cal Poly, Samford, SE Louisiana
First Out: Weber St., Albany, UT-Martin, Western Illinois
Other bubbles that may be burst: Montana, Maine, Duquesne, Fordham

Technically I say leave UNI out.  Over the years their Athletic Director held a position on the selection committee and voted to leave us out even when we had 7 division 1 wins. I believe that one year we had 8 wins and voted to leave us out.  Payback is a b****.

I believe the uni AD is actually on the committee this year.

Thanks Nation!  I really think that our defense has played outstanding to date.  I expect the same this weekend.  I know it is an offensive scheme unlike we have seen this year (except maybe WVU).  And while I respect the strength of the Jacks, I believe our Defense will play as they have all year.  Together without backing down.  I think our offense can get some yardage as well.  Lets Go Guins!

I watched a good portion of the Indy st / Ill St. game as well.  As mentioned their QB was out (with a concussion?) and they were running some wildcat offense with the WR as QB.  This certainly changed their playbook and overall game structure.  I'm not sure yet what we will see when we face them.
As for Indy state, they continue to be an improved team from the gateway years.  Again they were helped by playing strong defense and I believe at times a shorter field.
Both are winnable games...but lets get through the 'yotes first.

1-AA - I like and agree with most of your analysis on the drive summary and I am impressed with our ability to score in the second half on every drive.
In response to our QB's.  I trust BP's judgement to call Wells our starter and not go to a 2 QB alignment.  His numbers are not the best in the league and he has made some early season mistakes.  He needs to develop, and I know that too often fans timelines are much shorter than reality.  However, he has also made some very great throws and smart plays.
I called the 2-pt conversion to be well covered and would cause HW to run.  Another fan told me that if he has to run he would not make it and be down at the 1.  :o  If BP thought this was an issue...he would have adjusted.
Trust in our team.  We played good, not great but I feel that each week we have seen improvement on Beede field.
