Every YSU coach since Tressel has been someone's crony. It's time to do a real search for a new coach and assistants.

Strollo couldn't raise money to replace the ancient chairbacks and bleachers in Beeghly.  All programs are on shoe string budget at YSU compared to other schools.  We are in the bottom 3rd or worse in both the MVFC and Horizon league.  Yes, there have been facility improvements but no real big money to make a difference.  Who should we hold accountable for that?

Tressel was president since 2014. Thats where I would start.  We may not like where college sports has gone, but thats where it is.  YSU has to decide whether to compete in this environment or decide to move down.  One way to compete is to go after coaches who arent from the "Valley."  It doesnt seem to be working.  Fortunately for basketball(and other sports), true national hires were made.

This is Holdens second transfer. The immediately eligibility rule would not apply. Although with the NCAA you never know.

The more appropriate comparison is what other FBS schools pay other FCS schools for their body bag game.  If YSU thinks they arent getting paid enough, a dozen others would step in for the same amount or less.  Ohio State may be arrogant but the could have thrown this cash to any number of colleges.  The fact that YSU got three of these games and others got fewer over the same period Im sure rankles some of the others, especially since YSU is FCS.

Caffey is a 4.0 African American. Doubtful he is paying at OSU.  If local HS talent is weak, what does that say about the two locals that YSU did recruit; both at lower division programs.

Stages of fandom....passionate interest/bandwagon effect; anger; apathy. Anger is good because it reflects interest. If anger is not responded to it leads to apathy which is difficult to recover from if not fatal.

1. Is Strollo the one who is actually deciding who the head coach is? 2. Is this a season killing game, where the coaching staff has lost the team? 3. Will the better players make use of the transfer portal to escape this situation and move on to better programs? 4. Is YSU the only program in the country in which being from the area seems to be the major criteria for the head coach?

One can criticize the compliance department  for not making sure Pelini took the tests, but please, Pelini had no sense of responsibility beyond himself since he arrived on campus. He was surly, resented community events, was lazy about recruiting, behaved badly during games, so much so that a "pelini rule" was added.  He never accepted that he reported to anyone. So he avoided what seemed to him trivial and unnecessary and suffers no consequence.  I would bet that he is the only coach on staff who didnt take the test.  Then he leaves as soon as his Nebraska pay ends. What a guy!

There have been many complaints during recent years about how unprepared the teams seem to be especially against better opponents and how coaches seem unable to adjust effectively. Perhaps that has to do with the lack of quality control coaches and use of data to analyze the team and opponents.

Good post Wick250. I was here through the Monus debacle and shared the same fears. Its possible that Sebo tipped the scales but wealthy donors are influential at most universities for better and worse. What matters now is the outcome.  I was also here through the Tressel years and while I have issues with Tressel as president, I also saw the power of YSU football to unite the community in a positive way.  That may not be repeatable for a number of reasons at that scale, but restoring some part of the past can do nothing but help. Its clear that Pelini ran from developing the connection between the University and the community to the point that anger became apathy. At least when fans are angry they care. It will be difficult to develop interest from apathy but I hope he is successful.

When did Sebo become a player at YSU? He had no interest previously. As I said previously re Tyrell...if this works out--great; but if not its on Tressel. You all are overestimating how well he is running the university.

SEBO?

One of Tressel's great strengths while coach here was his ability to recognize and hire assistant coaches. The track record of those who started here and went on to success at higher level jobs is very solid. The relative lack of success of those who followed him and even Slocum on the basketball side partly due to the weakness of their staffs and their inability or unwillingness to improve them.  If the new coach is unable to find a staff that enhances his strengths and compensates for his weaknesses he will likely fail as well. I hope he is smart enough to ensure that he has the resources to hire a quality staff and the ability to recognize coaching talent that Tressel had.

Those of you who are putting all of your faith in Tressel, remember a couple of things...first, he was responsible for Bo coming here.  How did that work out?  Second, for all of the accomplishments that are public, the state of YSU as an organization under his leadership, has been mixed at best.  There is plenty of money at YSU. Like all organizations, they cry poor when they dont want to do something and find the money for what they want to do.  If he is such a great fund raiser, and the rich powerful alums are behind a particular person, money can be had to subsidize a coach and staff for the term of the contract.

If you want to give him credit for recruiting a HS coach and the coach is successful, great. If its another bust, dont blame Strollo, its on him.
