YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU Beeghly facilities upgrade

They have been sleeping at the wheel. Would have been so easy to take advantage of this unique opportunity to highlight something positive happening at the university.
Let me take a wild guess here…. All the students and/or interns are off for the summer. Our regular staff are probably too busy doing other important work…(?)
If they can’t report on football news (the season is just about a month away), what make us think they would report on basketball facility with the season more than 4 months away, lol

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: MBB Non-Conference Schedule
« on: July 05, 2024, 04:32:39 PM »
The only D1 teams that visited Beeghly were Niagara, Canisius and Robert Morris and they are now in the Horizon.  Akron and Kent haven't been on the schedule in years. Something tells me they refuse to come to Beeghly and that's why we don't play them at all.  Central Michigan (I think)  is the last MAC team I recall playing at Beeghly.  There just aren't alot of schools other then maybe St Francis or Morehead.

That's not true at all.  Last year YSU had 4 D1 home games scheduled before 2 cancelled on them, but still played Utah Tech & Navy played at home.  Year before UT Martin, Louisiana, Ohio & Southern all played at Beeghly.

We played at Louisiana in the beginning of the season. Did you get mixup with the last home game (NIT) when we played Ok St?

I'm sure the Union tried that on Dunn cause he was new and more so an outsider.

Agree. If I recall correctly, that was Dunn’s first academic senate. To Tressel’s credit, he avoided discussing topics relating to athletics. He mostly focused on academic, operational (especially enrollment and budget) and infrastructure issues.
When I met with him, he was especially interested in students’ accomplishments.

Let's note that for many years, the main draw to moving up, was the chance at big game revenues ... at this point we are getting those games now. How long that lasts will be a big question. Will a different governing body (some sort of play-off committee) look down on play-off caliber teams playing the FCS schools?

As more teams are moving up from FCS to FBS, I believe the ability for FCS teams to schedule big $$ games will be more difficult. If the business could be made to move up in order to get those games, we need to at least be open to the idea. If the numbers don’t add up, at least we have tried.

Most of the discussions on moving down to d-2 that I have heard within the university were mostly from the faculty union. I recall the time after a heated discussion in the academic senate on this subject and I was walking out after the meeting and had a brief discussion with then new YSU president Randy Dunn. He told me that the trustees and the community told him that they wanted YSU to stay in d-1 sports. I don’t know if that was true. But that was what he told me.

In my time associated with the university, I have seen many studies done on why we couldn’t afford to do it ( mostly from the faculty union on why we shouldn’t be doing it) and I have not yet seen one on what it takes to do it by looking at the entire business case ( how could we do it).

To get this done, someone in the university needs to push, sell and justify it by building a business case which
needs to include the following (at a minimum)

True cost on scholarships - as I mentioned in my previous post that the cost is less than the number of the additional scholarships multiplied by the cost per scholarship

Additional revenue by playing regional rivalries home and away plus couple big money games with the big boys

Support by deep pocket donors

Increase in ticket prices

Reduction in travel costs (within neighboring states)

Impact of increased scholarships on other YSU sports

Realignment on other sport conferences (Horizon, MVFC….)

Additional TV revenue and advertising revenue

Impact of name exposure on potential increase in student enrollment

Others ( that I didn’t mention or I am not smart enough to think of…)

I don’t know if it is feasible. But I know if nobody in the administration of the university is willing to take ownership to move this forward, it will never happen.

I hate to say, with the change of landscape in NCAA, I don’t know if the current path will be sustainable. This is like trying to row a boat upstream. We either moved up (rowing hard) or it would move down  (naturally)  but we won’t be able to stay where we are at.

Am I all wet?

Absolutely delusional.  My concern is we're closing to being in the NEC for football.  I can see it now.  YSU in the NEC western division with Mercyhurst, Robert Morris, Duquesne and St Francis.

Look at the bright side, we would probably make the playoff every year. lol
Someone (AD and/ or administration will need to put a business case together to see what it takes to join the MAC.
It has been reported that it will cost $15M to make the move up. Let us find out how much the donors are willing to fund the program.
From a business standpoint, if we could play 2 more money games, we would get another $1M. At fbs, we need to fund 30 more scholarships. At $20,000/players, that will be $600k plus room and board.  However, what is the true cost to the university since the tuition is funny money we pay ourselves (not to mention we will get money from state subsidies).I don’t know if the university has ever hire more faculty to teach the additional athletes.
When I was a faculty member, I regularly had 2-3 athletic students in my classes. I just taught them as part my class (sometimes as over loads). It didn’t cost the university any additional $$.
Joining the MAC, we might generate higher revenue by playing our regional competitors such as Akron, Kent, Ohio, Toledo…
I don’t know what the true cost will be by joining MAC. In the last 20 years working in the university, I have not ever seen any business case or analysis being done to see if it is feasible.
My gut feeling is that , if we continue to go on the present path, we will continue to go downward until no one will watch the game anymore since the product will no longer be desirable to the fans. I, for one, will not be interested in watching teams like Mercyhurst, Duquesne, Robert Morris, Valpo, Butler….
My 2 cents worth.
It takes money to make money. We will continue to save money into oblivion.

With Cris Carroll on the upcoming roster has anyone heard any other names we are recruiting for next year.  We need another point guard and possibly a walk-on big guy say 6-8 or similar size.  We are set at center and shooting guards just need more forwards. Anyone here anything??
We need forward who can do layups (finish at the ream) and make 10 foot jump shots.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU Baseball

There are lots of things that go into this. However, the biggest thing to know is that a few people stood up for the baseball team when it look like YSU was going to drop baseball the same year as Cleveland state and one of the other schools that dropped it I forget. So there’s definitely a financial situation involved here. Baseball is equivalency sport, so Bertolini can really distribute the scholarships (if there are any) as he sees fit.

The one thing that should be noted here is that FCS football is also an equivalency sport. So you can imagine that football alone has as many scholarships as all of our other men’s equivalency sports combined. But this is a football school . and with the most recent focus on women’s sports, one can imagine there’s been nothing going into baseball financially.

I could be wrong… I thought U of Akron dropped baseball the same time as CSU.
I recall that a few Akron players transferred to YSU that year.

Playing Mercyhurst would be worse that playing Valpo!

I watched us losing to Butler, need I say more.

He'll play over seas and make some decent cash.  Very versatile .  Can handle the ball and his 3 point shooting will probably get better in Europe.   One of the best rebounders in YSU history.  Love his effort and ethuiasm,

I can’t see him cracking the NBA roster as suggested by others.
Antonine Davis is still in the D league. K. Perry is still playing in Europe. Those 2 guys were first team Horizon league players.

Burns’s strength is in rebounding. How many 6’6” guys that we know of is effective in rebounding in NBA? Charles Barkley probably was the best 6’6” guy ever in rebounding, but that was 30 years ago before all these 6’10” guys starting to show up.

Burns is an ideal player for Europe…. Good with ball handling , good 3 point shooter, good ft shooter, good rebounder with quickness, timing & positioning.
