YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Track and Field teams?
« on: February 09, 2014, 11:58:33 PM »
Technically every meet is NCAA sanctioned, and all marks can be applied toward NCAA qualifications.  The national invite title, is just a title.  I will agree that without the WATTS we could not host meets in general, but all meets that have been held in the WATTS are sanctioned.

You cant make the move to FBS without a substantial monetary commitment, there has to be a plan and that plan includes possibly taking a hit on win percentage up front, in the hopes that more exposure, brings more interest that brings more money.  Along with this has to be an administration in place that has a proven plan, with a good hiring track record, and patience.  Just "going FBS" means nothing.  All these things lining up are rare, which is why the success rate for fcs to fbs is so low, and why success rates of most schools that have always been FBS pretty bad.  There has to be a plan in place and determination if there is not, its much better and easier to not try.

Hardcore fans are the lifeblood of any team, and any team is lucky to have them.  But what about those fans on the fence, or fans by proximity.  You've got to give them a product to sell, not just speak poorly of them when they dont show up.  Beeghly would be nice to fill, but more than one year of winning has to accompany that.  The way i see it, it takes alot of talent to run a Todd Haley offense, the kind it seems YSU is trying to copy.  It takes toughness , grit and nastiness to have an old school Power run offense, with a wild defense that is YSU's best hope as they do not have access to  the High quality talent.   2nd string in Florida is still 2nd string, and if you cant train or recruit nastiness then another profession might be in order.

ESPN didnt exist...in the 90's?   ESPN was founded in '79 and ESPN2 in '93.  I do agree with bigred though, YSU does not seem to be on top of the media or advertising aspects, then again you gotta have something to sell in this world.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Injuries

The rash of injuries probably have more to do with structural weakness in the athlete than a knee brace or not.  I honestly thought the, fitted knee braces, would cost more than ones a highschooler would wear, though maybe more HS'ers are springing for the more expensive versions now.

My guess would have to be cost, ScarletRook.  those braces i believe are specially made to measurements taken, so each one is unique.  Ive heard numbers in the 3k up range for each pair.  That is if TV announcers are correct.

Pretty surprising that Bobby Grace making and placing in a national competition this year, or Jarret or Seaver did not make this list.  I would think instances of success over long term would be held of greater value than winning home games or beating bad BCS teams.

Wick250,

Juuuuust a bit outside.  I operate under the assumption that the majority of people in YSU see the MAC as sour grapes, they'd really like to be there for the opportunity to "beat" MAC teams and show dominance which some still inexplicably think.  I use Kent for proximity purposes and for the fact that everyone else seems to use Kent as an adverb.  I shall use "Akron" from now on since "Kent" displeases you.

I also do not operate under the assumption MAC schools make money, clearly you did not read my post.  Moreover, it takes no more than a swift click of the Google to figure out that only 22 of 227 public division I institutions broke even or plus-ed in 2011-2012.  I frankly don't care about relationships between faculty and athletics, The MAC schools, Akron, for instance, have made strides to set themselves up for bigger and better things IE. advertising through athletics,  which is huge.  They may not make a profit now, but clearly someone, be it the president, Board of trustees or both, want it to be profitable one day.  Which is why the board of trustees, I'm sure, cares not if the faculty aren't enthused.  The point I'm making, if your not moving forward your standing still.  Phrases like "stay within our means and budget" are code words for status quo, and the status quo, being mid-tier nationally is hardly moving forward.  It takes money to make money.  Schools either invest money for the quest to become OSU and get better in the process, or become North Dakota State, win a championship and no one cares.  And if the latter is what schools want, then there's alot of whining on these boards about the Athletic Director and other individuals that by your logic, shouldn't matter.

Ill never call the attempt by the "midgets" as you put it to become big timers stupid.  It is a FACT that every school that has great academics and great athletics (which is the main goal of any and all schools with athletics Division I to III), did so by emphasizing athletics first.  Academics gets better with funding, more enrollment, more funding.  Kids don't grow up watching science bees, and wearing the sweatshirts of collegiate debate teams.  Athletics is the biggest form of advertising an institution can do.  The teams that developed great athletic teams first are now the nations top enrollment, profit, research, and influential schools.  I guarantee enrollment for Northern Illinois and Kent State will up next year, just like their 2002 foray to the elite 8 rose enrollment in the fall of 2003.  Those schools whether planned that way or completely accidental did it correctly.  Investing in athletics is the ONLY way to bolster a public institutions status.  And i think the pursuit of that with a good athletic department and a willing board of trustees, is the smartest thing a university can do.   There's no money in IAA, either go for the money or be Case Western.

Kid seems to be better than the average penguin.  Article didn't really say much about him, but Track seems headed in a good direction.

Just because there are teams on a campus doesn't mean kids will "just come".   One of many things that continues to confuse me about YSU is the insistence that people must by a product and be loyal to it, with that product never having to better itself.  And before we start with the statistically based arguments,  "good enough for mid-major"  is not an excuse anymore.  If there is no movement to progress past mid-major, no one will buy.

From a business standpoint I agree YSUGO, YSU's best move is to try to get into the MAC however struggling it might be, for exposure and revenue.   However to make it work the University itself would have to bolster the athletic budget by quite a bit in order to make a real go of it,  I don't think they're prepared to do that.

And Ill answer your final questions.  YES to all.  mini-sec like?  now that's an illusion.

Easily?  Delusions of Grandeur?  Who really has the delusions of grandeur the vine holding the grapes or the person calling them sour because they cant reach?  From 2003 to 2012 the MAC has seen 76 players drafted, that's an average of about 8 per year.  The ENTIRE FCS, 127 teams, had 172 athletes drafted in the same amount of time, the entire FCS vs. one conference...So the statistics clearly says that if i want a much better probable chance at going to the next level, its a no-brainer.  And if the talent level is that unbalanced, in a competition ill take the talent 99 times out of 100.

If you cant see the obstacles needed to overcome the challenge of the next level, because you believe your already there.  You'll never get there, and if you never get there whats the point?

IAA,  Marshall joined the MAC after two consecutive years of going to the National Championship game and winning the National Championship in 96.  They came into a weak MAC conference where Toledo was the only good team.  This was almost 20 years ago now.  The fact that they are nothing now shows how weak the MAC conference they entered really was then.  MAC champions 5 out of 6 straight years, then 2 years later over conference USA into oblivion within a decent football conference.   Now almost 20 years later after Marshall's switch, and the last  championship we went to was 14 years ago.   Now more than ever?  I cant see that one.

wick,

Take Butler out of that equation and your "last decade" argument falls apart, and no one cares about women's basketball unless your Baylor, Uconn, ND, or Tennessee, sad fact but true.   As this reply, and thread i believe were about football i will stick to that point.

I don't CARE about the bottom of the MAC.  My Varsity to Jr. Varsity comment remains valid because every varsity team has players that don't see the field, just like the bottom of the MAC.  My point is the MAC's best will outclass the FCS best EVERYTIME.   who cares about the worst???  That's a huge part of Youngstown's problem, there seems to be alot of concern about being king of Jr. Varsity, and that the whole point of being the best PERIOD, has been lost.

The simple fact is the best in the MAC get PAYOUTS, the rest of the league get payouts as well,  on a scale not known on the FCS level.  So as far as the statement of

"He can say, "I know big time football, and the MAC is not big time football."

you mentioned in your earlier post.  Mangino may know big time football, but are you suggesting that HE now lie and say the FCS is "big-time football".

Look your hatred of the MAC is clear, and im willing to bet you think that YSU "belongs" in the MAC,  maybe when the MAC was down and tressel was still around.   But its a different time, and the MAC has forged ahead.  So feel free to think somethings are ridiculous, pragmatically they are true.
