We will plan on the Blue Lot on the east side of the stadium. Two large lots on the east side where we will be aiming for the center or southern most side of the Lot directly behind the visitors side of the stadium (we will be trying to find some grassy area to pitch our tents).

Any YSU fans looking for a place to tailgate Saturday morning are more than welcome to join in with our group.  We will have one to two red & black Penguin tents and a tall flagpole with red flag.  We will have some food to share and folks are also welcome to use our gas grill.  Hopefully we'll fire the tailgate back up for a victory celebration after the game as well!!!

Safe travels to all and GO GUINS!!!

The Self-Proclaimed Expert (SPE) and Know-it-All of this message board continues to make posts with what appears to be a relentless attempt at undermining the support and perception of our programs while seeking to generate as much negativity as possible!?!  I thought I would try to add some reality to all the lies and false information being spewed regarding the competency of YSU football recruiting since Tressel departed!

I will be the first to admit that I'm no recruiting expert - and there are certainly plenty of folks who get paid large sums of money for their recruiting expertise that miss the mark badly on many occasions (i.e. top QBs drafted highly in the NFL who bomb out year after year!?!).  So I'm not trying to make anyone look incompetent here (I'll let our SPE do that to himself) - I'm just trying to illustrate that the bashing of our last two recruiting classes is very likely as inaccurate as most all of the prior opinions of our SPE (despite his repeated claims to have always been correct).  Finally, I'm not trying to compare our two prior coaches and/or disparage either of them in any way - I was optimistic over both hiring's, I believe I was a strong supporter of them both as best I could (even though I did not care for one's personality), and I would have to admit that I was happy to see changes made to replace each of them when the time came.

 >>>  CONFERENCE RECORDS/ACCOMPLISHMENTS (comparing results of Heacock's supposed abysmal recruiting classes vs Wolford's tops-in-conference recruiting classes):

 Heacock -
      Record in Conference:  34 - 30 (4 of 9 seasons above .500 record)
      Two Conference Titles:  2
      Playoff Appearances (16 Teams):  1

 Wolford -
Record in Conference:  18-22 (1 of 5 seasons above .500 record)
      Conference Titles:  0
      Playoff Appearances (20-24 Teams):  0

Now consider the significant increase in football expenses/salaries, huge facility upgrade w/ the WATTS, and the expansion of playoff bids from 16 to 24.  Could someone please add the common sense to the equation that shows how Wolford's significantly better recruiting classes + higher salaries + WATTS + 24 playoff bids = poorer results in all aspects than Heacock???

 >>>  BLUE CHIPPERS (comparing 1st and 2nd Team All-Conference Selections between Heacock's abysmal classes vs Wolford's best-in-conference classes).  Note, in fairness, we should expect the numbers to be slightly higher for Heacock due to the fact that there were 1 or 2 few teams in the conference for most of his tenure.

 HEACOCK:
2001 (sorry, I neglected to record data for this year - we'll just credit any accolades to Tressel anyway)
2002 - 6 1st and 2nd Team All Conf Players (Mays, Roberts, Mazard, Tekac, Barone, Stuvaints*)
 2003 - 3 (Roberts, Davis, Bracken)
 2004 - 4 (Ison, Roberts, Bracken, Wright)
2005 - 9 (Ison, Jewell, Scholes, Terry, Jackson, Mason, Brown, Perry, Bishop)
2006 - 12 (Mason, Jewell, Walker, Phelan, Savage, Hutchinson, Terry, Jackson, Perry, Bishop, Bush, Samsa)
2007 - 10 (Williams, Samsa, Savage, Terry, Zetts, Bush, Tanner, Palmer, Banford, Gliatta)
 2008 - 2 (Samsa, Fernandez)
 2009 - 4 (Jones, Savage, Rodemoyer, Wicks)

 WOLFORD:
2010 - 6 (Barnes, Cook, Coates, Blose, Nicholsen, Ross) - ALL HEACOCK RECRUITS
2011 - 4 (Hess, Cook, Pratt, Johnson) - Two 1st Teamers from Heacock, Two 2nd Teamers from Wolford
2012 - 3 (Elkins, Cook, Shaw) - One of Three still from Heacock
2013 - 5 (Elkins, Stubbs, Ruiz, Hess, Teven Williams who was then dismissed from team) - Still one from Heacock
 2014 - 3 (Rivers, Ruiz, Williams)

A couple points that just don't seem to pass the sanity test here:  (1) The SPE warned everyone how pathetic Heacock's recruits were, yet Heacock had an astounding 31, I repeat 31, 1st and 2nd team selectees in years 5 thru 7 of his tenure!?!  (2) in WOLFORD's five years on the job, he could only produce 11 of his own 1st and 2nd team performers from all of his "top ranked recruiting classes", yet 10 lowly players left over from Heacock managed to attain these accolades!?!  How is this possible to recruit so outstandingly yet barely have any of these players achieve all conference status - and worst yet nearly be outnumbered from the players left over from a guy who left 6 years ago and couldn't recruit a lick per our SPE????????????

Final point - I will admit this is currently far more subjective at this point in time, but as far as Pelini's first recruiting class goes, it is clearly a long way to go to look back and assess all conference performers as well as win/loss successes (admittedly, not a great start?!?).  But I do believe anyone who calls Pelini's first class (or 2nd for that matter) a stinker is full of it!  Too many Freshman on the two deep already contributing significantly in year 1 (Place Kicker, Long Snapper, LB, DL, DB, OL, WR, ...) to go along with some highly touted transfers in Alexander, Moss, Wright, Pinnock, and Powell.  Everyone is entitle to their opinion, but most anyone with an open mind would have to say the 1st recruiting class has already made more significant contributions than one would expect from any recruiting class after just one year with the team!!!  Of course, others are simply hell-bent on spreading enough negativity that they hope it will resonate to potential future recruits and make it that much more difficult to obtain any sustained level of success.

I would advise everyone to take our Self Proclaimed Expert's opinion with a grain of salt, but that would greatly diminish the value of the salt granule!!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: play-offs

YBR - I thought real hard about going to that playoff game but as much as I would have liked to root for UD, I would have hated to see an MVFC team on the losing end of a playoff game to a Pioneer league team (not to mention I would have hated to miss the Buckeye beat=down against scUM!!!).

UD did indeed meet the minimum $30k required to have a chance to host that playoff game - a drop in the bucket when your basketball team is selling 12,500 tickets per game at $40 and up (way up!).

BTW, your boy Stoops has his team looking much better than when we were watching them against the Longhorns!!!

YSU Penguin Athletics / When You Have this Disease
« on: October 31, 2015, 10:59:01 AM »
When you have this Disease ...

... you wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back to sleep because you are too hyped for the game.

... you drive all night to get home at 4:15am after a deflating loss last Saturday, and a week later you are kicking yourself for not making the trip to Macomb this weekend.

... you see your All-American defensive star standing on the sideline with one arm hanging limp from his side as the opposition mounts a tremendous comeback.  Then you watch as he returns with seconds left in the game and make a key tackle to help force the SIU into OT - you realize winners aren't always defined by the final count on the scoreboard!

... you see your underachieving offensive line, already playing without 3 starters, and then watch as two of them can barely pick themselves up off the ground and put weight on one of their ankles.  Yet they gimp back up to the line of scrimmage to lay it on the line for the TEAM - you realize the outcome may not be favorable but you have not doubt in your mind "our boys are fighting with a spirit that will not yield!!!"

... you listen to other folks criticize, complain, ridicule, and blame but you can't help but feel this TEAM will epitomize the heart and soul of the Town and the School which they represent!  NO QUIT and no doubt will continue to fight through adversity and make us proud to be part of the TEAM.

... you realize the improbable yet still believe in the possible!!!

... finally, you understand that you don't want to find the cure for this particular disease 'cause there's nothing like the excitement and anticipation that comes from that passion you have when watching your team compete!

Good Luck Guins - looking forward to watching you guys lay it on the line today!!!

YBR -

You always have a standing invite to join up with our crew!  We are still in our same location midway down the island in the center of M-24.

We are also planning to be at SIU and ISU(b) in the event you can make either of those road games.  Hope to see you!!!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Who is going to Illinois State Saturday?
« on: November 06, 2014, 07:55:04 PM »
JP21, had a few more from our crew scheduled to go but now down to two of us.  The parking lot Penguinpower referred to is no longer there - they cleared that area for the new side of their stadium.  We found an open lot just south of the stadium to tailgate in the pouring rain two years ago.  We will probably drive around briefly looking for other Guin fans - otherwise we will be in that lot just south of the stadium again (roughly 1/4 to 1/2 mile South - just off the main road running along the East side of the Stadium).  Look for us if you get a chance.

I'm not sure of other places to hang out.  I have always driven in and out in the same day.  We will be staying friday night this year - may try to find a local bar but no idea where.

Go Guins!!!

HappyPenguin -

Too much else going on to prevent us from committing to attend this game but odds are three of us will be there.  We were also looking at one of the two hotels a couple blocks west of the stadium (not sure if they still have availability as it has been several weeks since I was looking).  We would stay Friday night and then drive back to Dayton after the game (then up to Y-Town for the remainder of the weekend on Sunday).

We also thought about tailgating from the hotel parking lot or gameday tailgating was also close by for only $20.  We will try to catch up with the two of you if we do indeed make the trip.

GoPENS67, you are welcome to join us as well - we should have a tall Penguin flag flying high (if it survived the snow storm during the SDSU last year!?!).  We hope to either be in one of the hotel parking lots to the West of the stadium or in the gameday tailgate lots just southwest of the stadium.  All are welcome!

Go Might Guins!!!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Wild Finish in the Horizon?!?
« on: February 22, 2012, 12:51:08 PM »
Looking a bit further, I think the scenario gets even better as it appears we don't need UWM to win out to join in on the 5 way tie (and give us the 2/0 wins versus loss we hold against them).  If UWM loses either or both of their games, there will could be a 4 way tie for second - and each of the 4 teams having identical 3-3 records versus the other opponents.  At that point we would be the only team to have defeated Valpo - at which point we again would get the #2 seed!!!

Indy, can you check my "math"?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Wild Finish in the Horizon?!?
« on: February 22, 2012, 10:59:39 AM »
Every time I allow myself to get too optomistic, it seems we come crashing back down to earth.  BUT, after yesterdays Horizon league results, it is not too far fetched that the following scenario could play out - and if it does, I believe (dare I say it) we could still climb into that very key #2 seed in the Horizon?!!!

Scenario -

UWM wins 2 on the road (against the current bottom two teams in the league) - UWM ends at 11-7.
Valpo beats Butler - Butler ends at 11-7
Detroit wins at Cleve St - Cleve St ends at 11-7
YSU beats Detroit - Detroit ends at 11-7
YSU beats WSU (before beating Detroit) - YSU ends at 11-7

In this scenario, with a 5-way tie, I believe we are the only team with a winning percentage versus the others - we would get the 2 seed!!!

Obviously, the pieces would all have to fall into place - especially us taking care of business at home (which I expect both games to be huge challenges for us).  I also don't rule out the worst case scenario where we could lose both games and fall all the way down towards the bottom of the league again.  But I hope Coach Slocum and the team can take care of business over the next few days - and knowing we have the potential to beat any opponent we will face in the tourney - sounds like a cinderella story is not out of the question (especially if we could slide into that #2 seed!)?

Whatever the results, thanks to the players and coaches for an exciting and enjoyable year of basketball!!!

Good Luck Guins!!!

Indy -

Thanks again for the info - the early Sat a.m. drive to Terra Haute has always had a very light flow of traffic.  Hopefully, there won't be much to slow us down.

Great news to hear you will be making the trip!!!  I tried to find you before the Illinois St game without success???

At any rate, I tried to round up some more from our group to make the trip but it will likely only be 2-4 of us.  We plan to leave my place in Dayton by 8:00a sat morning - should get to the tailgate lot by 11:00a for the 2:00p game (hopefully, the time zone isn't shifting my understanding of the actual game time?) then heading back to Dayton after the game.  As always, you and your crew are welcome to stay at our place on Friday and/or Sat.

Last game in Terre Haute still had plenty of free, wide open, grassy tailgating space.  Happy Penguin and Dracula plan to be there early and intend to set up just off the road nearest the SouthWest corner of the stadium - look for the banner attached to one of the huge Sycamore Trees.

With these two characters, YBR, yourself and me, I think we can make ourselves heard!!! Obviously, the road crowd always seems to enjoy the challenging of making our presence felt - unlike so many of the home fans that won't make any noise until the last drive of a close game.
