Trying to figure out how many scholarships are available to give this signing season.

Is Maymon still around?  Will Larson be on scholarship next year?

At least 3 available for Boudler, Sulskis and Brogdon less one Fall signing = minimum of two available, correct?

Shouldn't Slocum be out recruiting instead of being a Buter reality star.  Signing date is April 13th

We just tell it like it is.

Uh - no he shouldn't be out recruiting.  Its an NCAA no-contact "dead" period from March 31 until April 7.   Final Four is always a dead period - and the annual coaches convention.

Win or lose Monday, Butler's run in tourney means $7 million to Horizon paid out over next 6 years.

Before the $7 million is split with the rest of the Horizon over the next 6 years, Butler will get about $500K off the top.

Very nice story in the Lake County News Herald on an interview with Ashen Ward about how to beat Butler.  Very good read.

Coach Slocum was on Fox Sports Radio's national morning show on Tuesday.

http://www.foxsportsradio.com/pages/foxallplayer/mainplayer.html?uri=channels/446580/1249086

The host twices calls him as the coach of the Youngstown State Pirates - that's what happens when you make a rock jock a sports talk host.  He got it right by the end. Zakk says he started his radio career in Youngstown.

Coach says the staff won't take calls from coaches to talk about how to beat Butler.  Support our league team.

Coach wants more teams in the tourney - maybe 72.  Sticking up for more mid-majors.

Wishes Butler and VCU were playing the big conference boys.

About six minutes - no real revelations but some good pub for the Pirates.   ::) ::)

UWGB made the Women's Sweet 16 for the first time.  They lost to #1 seed Baylor 86-76.  UWGB finishes 34-2.

Wick - I am sure that the "base" NCAA tournament money, whatever that may be, is part of a budget and is probably spoken for as part of the big picture.  But lets go back to 2009-2010 school year budget and I am sure the amount that is going to get budgeted for the 2011-2012 school year budget is higher.

We all figure the blood money from football is helping fund the increase in football coaching salaries.  That makes sense. I just would like to know that the increase in NCAA money goes to helping men's basketball.  Whether it is spent wisely is another discussion for another time and another thread.

Big D - Thanks for the link - it seems over the years info on how the HL splits the pie has been hard to find.  I like the current approach - although all it is going to do is make Butler even more able to sit at the top of the league.  Now if the March and April bandwagon fans would start selling out Hinkle every game.  Of course I would like to see Butler take some of the cash and get some modern restrooms in that place.   ;D

I believe I read the other day that each unit earned in the NCAA tournament gets a payout of about $250k this year.  And each game won by the league counts for six seasons.  So Butler's run the last two years will bring some serious coin to the HL.
Please mandate that any increase in distributions that gets kicked to YSU be used on men's basketball - increase the recruiting budget, increase the coaching salary pool, something to plow back in to the program.  Lets face it, the league can raise their standing even more if the bottom of the league can step it up.

Thank you for your consideration,

YSU Basketball Fans

Nice win by Butler.  Horrible end of game shot selection by Florida.  Brad Stevens may not make as much as Eddie Munster (err Billy Donovan) but he was worth a whole lot more today.

And we will add this from midmajority.com on basketball spending and the "red line"

http://www.midmajority.com/p/1994

The Horizon League quote

We always look for trends in these numbers from year to year. One interesting tidbit is that the average Horizon League athletic budget dropped from $9.7 million to $8.5 million. On the other hand, men's basketball spending increased by an average of $200,000 per school, from $1.6 million to $1.8 million. Who's spending more? Look at Detroit: $2.0m up to $2.6m, and to a smaller extent, Youngstown State ($.9m to $1.03m). But really look at Butler, who increased spending by $11 million in their Final Four fiscal year ($1.7m to $2.8m, 23 percent of a $12.4m overall budget).

Like an idiot I will try again.

Some coaching news updates:

UWM Coach Rob Jeter turned down Bradley and Loyola is said to have interest in Michigan State assistant Mark Montgomery and Indiana Assistant Tim Buckley (former head coach at Ball State) per the Chicago Tribune.  Story also mentions Isaih Thomas is interested in the job but Loyola has no interest in Zeke.

Indy Star reports Loyola may also have interest in former Butler and Iowa coach Todd Lickliter and Butler assistant Matthew Graves is being considered by Bradley.  The story also talks about former IUPUI coach Ron Hunter's decision to take the Georgia State job.

EL - From a fan perspective in Indy, the bandwagon was getting pretty empty after the YSU game.  My son didn't get nearly the grief he thought he would for wearing his YSU sweatshirt to school the next day.
Rest assured the bandwagon has filled back up.

My reaction: Money!  Money!  More Money for the league and for YSU. :)

I agree.  I have never seen two bone-headed plays back-to-back.  The announcers spent much of that game telling us how great the Pittsburgh coach is.  Yet he committed a blunder at the end that would be inexcusable even at the high school level.  Once his player made the first free throw to tie the game at 70, he should have removed his players from the free throw lane-to avoid exactly what happened.

All of the news accounts are calling this a "big upset."  Since when is it an upset when a good college basketball team beats a collection of NBA wanna-bes?

Wick - my son and I stopped to eat on our way back from some high school semi-state games here and watched the end of the game.  Your two comments were the exact things he told me as we watched - why were the guys on the line and how much money did YSU make.   ;D

I thought maybe one thread to keep track of what goes on with our Horizon League foes this "off-season" even though we have teams still playing.

Loyola fired Jim Whitesell today - a record a few games over .500 in 7 seasons was not good enough
