YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU to the Big East??
« on: October 26, 2011, 01:10:03 PM »
Everyone has hopes and dreams to move up and become more prominent and well-known on a national stage.  Timing is critical.  However, this is a highly transitional time period for many teams and conferences, and I like to entertain the ideas of moving a program forward.

However, all the moves at the FBS level are being made to make teams more and more money.  And I am not sure how many of the university presidents and AD's have really taken a clear look at what is happening in this ever changing landscape. But I don't think the number is very high and it is likely that many of these teams will lose out over time.  Boise State may be one of the only teams that is looking to move forward in a manner in which they don't grow too rapidly and lose out what they have gained over a period since the late 1980s when started their rise in 1-AA.

As for the "rebuilding" Big East...who else would they be building with? Other FCS schools?  It would give teams moving up the chance to get 6 wins in their first year, but will the BCS "X" out their automatic bid?

Is the MAC or Conference USA a good fit? Of course all of the teams in the MAC would make it easier for a fan to drive to the game but what do the other teams in these conferences think?  And we may have a chance to win the East division of Conference USA.  Would it make it tougher on recruiting for other schools or YSU?  Would Kent State or Akron really want us in? And the major question before any decision in the post mortgage fall-out...Can we afford it?

I like the idea of moving up and understand that we should be looking outside the MVFC for a transition as soon as practical, but right now may not be the right time to move up to FBS.  Unless we get an offer that we can not refuse.

I agree with Happy.  There is still alot of time in the season.  And although I hate to discuss the "what if's" of my own team many weeks in advance...we need to win one game at a time, four more times.

-A UNI loss to NDSU this weekend at the fargo dome would be nice, but not essential, due to the tougher remaining schedule for NDSU (who still has Indiana State, who has proven they can score this year).

-As such we need to take care of business this Homecoming weekend against WIU, they are coming off a tough loss and have won the last two against us.

-Then would come our nemisis uni: If we win one remaining game all season I want this one, and it will come down to both teams defense.

-"If" we were able to do the two above items, I think "Uncle Mo"-mentum would take over.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: How YSU Offense Stacks up in the FCS so far
« on: October 21, 2011, 12:30:04 PM »
I think our offense is set up to move the ball well with a smart quarterback making short high % throws, strong RB's and a coordinator who is not afraid to throw the ball deep now-and-then.  That way even if the home-run isnt there, it is another thing on the defense's mind...thus promoting the short routes and quick bubble screens.

Our offense has outgained the opponents by almost 25% additionall yardage. 2,769 versus 2,226
Our offense has also had 34 drives of 40+ yards or more compared to 24 by the opponents.

I believe our defense, still a work in progress, is doing well.  Not including the Michigan State or Valpo games, Total Yards by quarter for our opponents is as follows:

1st qtr      2nd qtr     3rd qtr     4th qtr
500           483          336          236

Total 2nd half production is only 37% of the Opponents total offense.  A case can be made for all of the following (1) our young defense not showing up in the first quarter, (2) good coaching adjustments, and (3) the opponent offensive unit wearing down.

Congrats on the Win!  8)

Contrary to popular belief I have been very happy with the half-time adjustments made by our defense (both staff and players).

team   1st   2nd   3rd   4th  total
YSU     63    76     48    28   215
OPP    48    99     20    38   205

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: SIU Game Stats

By the numbers -

Net kickoff yardage yards is terrible.  This has hurt us the last few weeks, giving a starting position so close to, or on our side of the field.  A few years back we began kicking to the sidelines near the 30 with as much hang time as possible, just looking for a fair catch.  I'm not sure that I like that option though.

If we can continue to cover this up by sustaining long drives and chewing up the clock as well as going 4 for 4 in the red zone, it will provide us with close and competitive games.

My best observation on this topic would be to replay the game atleast twice.  Once on game night would work well (dvr option available).  And then replay the game another night during the week possibly right after the coach's show on Wednesday nights.

put a crowd microphone in front of the band.  Let them play between plays rather than use that stupid canned music.

I agree.  The absolute worst is when the band and music play simultaneously.  It seems to happen a lot.

I agree with both statements.

As head of this program I believe that the energy given by Wolf (i.e. showinig enthusiasm on 3rd down) would rub off more than the water boy trying to get the crowd going.  Of course, the trainers can cheer too,  but their effectievness on the crowd would be deminimus compared to Wolf.

Winning the community and fans over, recieving their support on and off the field is one of the biggest challenges for any coach to overcome.  Winning multiple championships obviously gets their support.  The challenge leading up to the championships seems in active pursuit.

I agree with an upgrade to our sound system and believe that increased volume is a must.

As for our students, last week looked around our average.  I'm not sure splitting the students in half would help at all, but increasing their numbers certainly would help.

It seems to be a problem at all levels of play.  Fans now look at their cell phone for scores and stats from other games as well as texting each other.  This lessens the fans impact on games (just ask Tom Brady).
